Born in '61, I was eight when Aldrin and Armstrong landed on the moon. The best space toys for me was the Major Matt Mason series. Found a Matt Mason figure at an antique sale a few years back. I also have a GI Joe (a real one from the 60's) astronaut. Now those were inspirational toys!

The Cortez was one of the first motor homes ever produced. (There's probably no model of it though.)
I recognized the thing when I was a kid watching the 1960's space launches because my family had (still has) one of the early Cortez units (hull # 160).

My local pub is called 'The Man On The Moon'. It was opened shortly after the first moon landing. It originally had large photographs of the moon landing inside, but best of all was a tiny lobby - inside that, in a glass case, were models of the complete Saturn Five, with panels removed, so interior parts could be viewed, a large scale LM/CSM, and a large scale LM in the deployed state. I was six in 1969, and, like most kids, was fascinated by the models in the case. The pub sign was a stylised crescent moon, with a spacesuited astronaut, with visored helmet, reclining in it. Oddly, he had a red helmet, as worn by David Scott? in Apollo 9. Sadly, the models, sign and picture vanished when the pub was refurbished in the 1980's. The sign today is a painting of the classic shot of Buzz Aldrin by the LM.

Bad memory: a NASA guy came to our inner city grade school around 1966 and used a bunch of scale models in his presentation. After he was done, I excitedly rushed to the stage to get a closer look and ask him some questions. He rudely dismissed me, as if it was a waste of his time. Really disappointing. So I started my own collection, and by 1971 I had all the models from the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo eras, including an LRV, and started accumulating Apollo mission press kits.

We were all about those Revell models in the early '70s.
My brother built the 1:144 Saturn V and the 1:48 LEM with the gold foil.
I carefully painted and built the 1:72 manned spaceflight collection which included Mercury with the escape tower, Gemini with its service module and the Apollo CSM flying over a diorama with the LEM. I was really proud of the work I did on that.
Mom asked to borrow them for a party she was going to with a space theme. I packed them carefully for transport but when she brought them back they were all just heaped in a bag and pretty well all broken.
I pretty much gave up building models after that.

That was awesome Amy, thank you. I have been envious of your space model collection since I first noticed you had a collection from some of your earlier videos. I am sooo envious of your "Apollo (First ?)" model. That looks like the ultimate in detailed explanation of the stages of the mission, although the "Apollo Recovery" set is a great appendix to that too. Then all that's needed is the Saturn V launch system. I'm so excited that you have all those as you are an excellent space exploration promoter and inspiration to youth.
The only one of the space toys you showed that I personally own is the "Matchbox Pathfinder" set, but that is a great set, super detailed and the metallic blue vac-metal coatings are beautiful. One of my most treasured space toys is a 2" plastic model of the Hubble Space Telescope that I purchased at a Discovery Centre gift shop. I have a couple of rubbery 2" Saturn V, a 2.5" Space Shuttle Launch system (orbiter, External Tank and SRB's), a "Micro Machines" Space Shuttle w/ Boeing 747 carrier, a 2.5" and 5" die-cast Space Shuttle and a 2" X-33.
There is a neat looking "Legends of Space" rocket set with Redstone, Atlas, Titan, Saturn V and SSTS, and a Space Exploration play set from SpaceToys.com I think that has a couple of Soyuz capsules included that would probably round out a great space toy collection.
Lastly, my "holy grail" of space toys would be a quality plastic or die-cast 1:44 scale Voyager 1& 2. Actually if a company like , Franklin Mint, Smithsonian or Eaglemoss would start a collectible space probe collection of 1:44 scale I would most likely subscribe for that.

Great video! I really enjoy how much you have to show your appreciation to all that happened in the real days of space exploration of the 1960s and 70s.
I had the 1/48 scale lunar module when this stuff was all new and the models were everywhere, it was just the lunar module though, it didn't have the command ship with it. I remember how It was difficult for a then kid to get the gold foil that was in the kit set right on the landing legs and lower body. Models are so expensive now!
Have you ever heard of the "Major Matt Mason" line of space toys? That toy came out in the mid to late 1960s, I still have some of those toys myself, even a Major Matt that's arms haven't broken yet, those were really weak points the single wire inside the foam rubber bodies that allowed him to bend.
Look them up on RUclips as I'm sure someone has posted something about them. The 'star' Matt was a rubber bendy astronaut in a white suit with black at the bendy joints and black gloves and boots. He came with a white flip up Gemini style helmet and eventually there were all kinds of lunar exploration accessories to go with him. Then they added a character for him called "Sgt. Storm" in a red uniform. Of course then it went to aliens and a giant, but the original versions were all to cash in on Gemini and Apollo. I also remember, and still wish I had this one, a Snoopy character, about 8 inches or so tall I believe, Charlie Brown's dog, that was in an astronaut uniform with the head cover and helmet.

Amy, here's a couple of suggestions I think you will like, AMT did a set of all the manned boosters in 1/200 scale. It's boxed all together as the "Man in Space" set and includes a Mercury Redstone, Mercury Atlas, Gemini Titan, Saturn 1B and a Saturn V. It's on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Man-in-Space-Rocket-Set/dp/B004GWVQGA. Lindberg released a 1/200 Shuttle stack that is in the same scale: www.amazon.com/Lindberg-scale-Space-Shuttle-Boosters/dp/B000MQ8Y4Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1457928372&sr=1-1&keywords=lindberg+space+shuttle. These are both fairly simple kits. Another outstanding resin kit manufacturer is New Ware, I think some of their stuff is on the Real Space Models site but their own website is: mek.kosmo.cz/newware/ I have a resin update set for the Revell 1/96 scale Saturn V stack as well as a set of decals for it that I got from New Ware. I need to build that thing one of these days, maybe you'll inspire me...

They produced licensed copies of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo capsules, full size for the general public. We also did most of the display work out at KSC including the full sized replicas of the Space Shuttle. Always enjoyed building those models when I was a kid, so having the opportunity to do them full sized was very coo. Somehow I got teary-eyed thinking that John Glenn was still alive (the last one of the Mercury seven) when Amy produced this video. He died in December that year.
Those three action figures next to each other are a nice tribute to his life.

I remember assembling the Revel model back in the day. It was actually like 1995. I used to listen to "The Launch" over and over as i built my models. The smell of plastic cement still takes me back to those long summer days when I watched Apollo 13 literally every single day. I was obsessed. This was a great video, hats off for taking such good care of your models!

I love all the "if you want to demonstrate" this and that... c'mon Amy, let's be honest. There's the tiny pause right before you say those words each time. You REALLY want to say, "if you want to PLAY with them" but you keep checking yourself. It's OK. There's no shame in it. I "demonstrate" my Star Trek ships all the time! ;)

Originally, your 1/144 scale Saturn V was a Monogram kit. Revell had a Saturn V in 1/96 scale, with their 1/48 scale model being twice as large. In any case, it's nice to see these old kits back, (I built them when I was about nine, when the actual Moon Landing happened!) Sadly, the models are "Block 1" versions of the Apollo Hardware . . . .
You might also want to look into some of the proposed, hypothetical model kits being reissued, such as the old Revell Convair Space Shuttle Craft, and the classic Revell Moon Ship that will be coming out later this year.
Thanks for posting this, and keep building!

Great space toy collection! Finding the out of production collectibles are like pure gold.I used to have a Revell 1:72 scale Columbia (about 20 inches long,no boosters or tank)in the eighties. The last real space model was a Hasagawa 1:44 scale shuttle with boosters and launch pad.Putting in the time on a favorite real space model is a fun hobby.Doing the research for the subject is fun too!
    Cheers!

I had the 1:144 Saturn V and the 1:48 Command/Service Module with LEM adapter. And if you think that makes me nostalgic, my beloved cat was named Pedro and after the first Skylab launch, we often called him "Pete," inspired by Pete Conrad, the commander of the best fix-it crew in history!

I remember as a kid and the Apollo missions were taking place, there was an Apollo shampoo bottle (I think Avon made it) that had the command capsule with an accordion style feature that represented the service module for the bottle, and the cap was the lunar lander. When the shampoo was empty, you could flip the cap around and "dock" the lunar module into the bottle opening then squeeze the accordion, letting air pressure pop, or rather, launch the lunar lander piece into the air.

Haha! This is a great video, thanks for sharing your awesome collection! I just picked up from eBay a 1:28 scale JSC display model of the NASA/USAF X-24A lifting body. I've been obsessing over lifting bodies for about a year and a half now. I'm reading Wingless Flight by R. Dale Reed (one of the lead engineers on the program at the Flight Research Center) right now which is the complete history of the 12 year lifting body program that went from 1963-1975. I also obsessively keep up with Sierra Nevada Corporations Dream Chaser (basically based on the HL-20). Anyway...thanks again!

I once found a turned block of wood on the beach. It looked somewhat like a Mercury capsule, so I made it into one and put it atop a cardboard tube, fitted it with paint and fins and had a Mercury - Redstone. I gave it to my father, and got it back, when he died. It has been hit by a falling painting (remember to renew strings or use metal wire) and is quite disintegrated. I bought a Soyuz spacecraft in Moscow. It has been repaired and lacks a few antennae. I recently bought a Vostok that I have not begun working on. I bought the Saturn V, that you also have, for my niece. I really suffered as I could only get one. But she dreams of becoming an astronaut - so ... I also had a Sikorsky with an Apollo capsule. I believe that my nephew has it now.

My entire condo is full of space models. I started building when I was around 5 years old, and now don't have any room left! My favorite is most definitely the giant 4-foot X-15 model that I restored with the help of a friend. It is 1/15th scale. I also have several other X-15 kits showing different configurations of the vehicle. The three models that I put the most work into are my 1/72nd Space Shuttle stack, the 1/148th Lunar Module, and a 1/72nd X-15A-2. Besides real space, I also have many great kits from Star Trek and Star Wars such as the USS Enterprise and the Millennium Falcon. But the absolute favorite of sci-fi models is the Discovery from 2001: A Space Odyssey, which has its own shelf above the couch in the living room.

Oh my ..... had a memory of being a young man sitting at my grandfathers house in July 1969 watching the broadcasts about Apollo 11 . My Granddad gave me a paper cutout lunar module that was being given by (I believe) Shell gasoline dealers! I put it together and had that really cool paper model hung from my bedroom ceiling for several years!
