  • Driving from Detroit's most famous abandoned Packard Automotive factory, through downtown, to Detroit's southside neighborhoods of River Rouge and the Zug Island area. Zug Island is home to a massive US Steel plant currently being idled/partially closed. Production moving to Gary Indiana I believe?

    Roll the clocks back 80 years and every single one of those now abandoned buildings was pride of place. Illuminated, heated, and filled to capacity with proud, willing, and able employees, who not one needed or cared to have the internet, a cellphone, or social media. The smaller buildings surrounding the massive factories were full, all working, all trading, supplying someone with something. Seems the more we've gone forwards, the more backward we've become.

      you trippin, you only have to go back 40-50 years for that...even after the riots in the late 60s, Detroit still had alot of good neighborhoods all over . It's not till the 80s when the D took the big hit and started heading downward.

    • @capmidnite
      @capmidnite 9 месяцев назад +2

      The Detroit are still has auto plants and industries of all kinds, just not as much within the city limits. If you ever tour a modern car plant, you'd see how impractical and obsolete those old factories are. Overall the modern day American economy is still dynamic and innovative. The United States is a big country. Just focusing on one sliver of the country and proclaiming we've gone backward is missing the forest for the trees.

    As a Detroiter 👋🏾 I can speak on the desertion in the city. First off we are called the Motor City for a reason. We drive everywhere. We rarely walk long distances. We are a car city. Secondly nobody comes out in the rain. We usually stay in the house. It floods almost everytime it rains out here. Not just Detroit but the surrounding cities. The power usually goes out and the traffic lights stop working. Everybody has been staying inside. Just a couple weeks ago we had a tornado watch for the whole southeast MI. And these videos are mostl likely filmed during work hours or a Sunday. Which NOBODY will be outside in the rain during work hours lol. A beautiful sunny day on a Saturday will have it more lively. It’s plenty of videos of a lively Detroit.

      Well remember, our region in SE Michigan was basically created by the automobile. People most everywhere focus on the 630k people in the city of Detroit, but forget that the suburbs that go on contiguously from the city for about 30 to 35 miles in each direction contain about 4.3 million people. We all have Detroit for our big city for things like theatre and certain cultural events like the nationally televised thanksgiving day parade. Keep in mind many international businesses have their "Detroit" office in the suburbs, so basically, you will drive where ever you want to go. The airport, in a suburb since WWII, the zoo, in a suburb since the 50's, maybe earlier tbh. It is also very uncommon for someone to work and live in the same city/suburb in this region. Basically, if you don't have a car here, you are immobile. As a matter of fact, if you are applying for a white-collar job, it will be assumed you will have a car. However, If you are applying for a lower income job, a requirement for the job WILL be "reliable transportation" meaning you furnish it yourself. This is the motor city.

    Greetings from Brazil, J Utah. I've never been to the USA, but when I do go, I really want to visit Detroit. Regardless of what they say about violence and abandonment, the city's history fascinates me, and I'm also passionate about the city's teams: Pistons, Lions, Tigers, Red Wings. I look forward to more videos of the city in the near future. Bye.

    You have to admit, Detroit has done a lot of demo and cleanup. They look better than Chicago from what I have seen on youtube. Its not always so bad to downsize the city and restructure for the future. Obviously the car industry has taken major hits lately, time to adapt and evolve for survival, and it seems Detroit is doing just that.

    Detroit inner suburbs approaching the centre, has some very attractive buildings. Many are obviously empty, but can and should be restored and refurbished. If the city's recovery spreads outwards, from the centre, the inner suburbs can be rejuvenated. The old abandoned factories, however, are beyond recovery. They will need to be demolished and cleared.
