While I can see and understand the differences between abstract and impressionist photography/art, it seems clear to me that the two are regions on a spectrum with lots of overlap. Thank you for provoking thoughts.
I need light, because without it my canvas is black, I need form, because with light and no form my canvas is white. With light and form, I'm in business. Shadows, corners of buildings, silhouettes. Texture is a bonus. With texture I can show your face. Colour is often a distraction. I've not decided about colour and impressionism.
Perhaps, over time, you'll uncover how color can harmonize with your artistic vision, just as light and form have. It's all part of the artistic journey, isn't it?
@@evapolak-impressionist-photo I prefer black and white. When I do colour and black and white versions, I almost always prefer the black and white. The big exception is some of my ICM photos, the movement reduces or eliminates the strong contrast I like. I used to buy Richard White's calendars, he did landscapes using an Ebony 5x4. He lived in Mansfield, Victoria.
I get what you're saying! Photography can definitely be seen as abstract in that sense. It's fascinating how something as tangible as a photograph can still leave so much room for interpretation. Whether it’s representational or not really shapes how we connect with the image emotionally and intellectually. The lines between reality and abstraction are often so blurred in photography, which is what makes it such an intriguing art form!

All photograpghy is abstract…it’s just pigment on flat surface. Or pixels. Is it representational or not is the more proper question imo.
