Mr Speal, you are not only talented building & playing, but you're a historian also. Very good work. You're leaving your legacy. Thank you for all the hard work. As time goes by in this world, it needs more 'real'.
It would be great to produce an album of performances on these old instruments. In the classical music world we do that all the time. Several years ago I carefully built a replica of a Hittite guitar found in a grave that was 3600 years old. The reconstructed instrument sounds wonderful. It turns out that the guitar has about a 4000 year history. May the guitar live forever.
When you play it with a slide it sounds like a 1930s field recording or 78. Maybe that could be because the guitar makes a sound (because of its construction) that is all middle, no top or bottom. If I'm right, than makes a sound like a bell-shaped envelope using EQ, which is what gives those old recordings that distinctive sound. Does that make sense?
I've got a video of that somewhere. I'll have to find it. The guitar is currently on display at the Cigar Box Guitar Museum at Speal's Tavern. spealstavern.com

Great segment! I love the historical aspect of this.
Thankful for the nuggets of knowledge coming our way thanks to you!
Very interesting Shane. It almost looks like something out of the Flintstones
