San Franciscans Are Fighting to Turn the City Around | Erica Sandberg

  • "There's a huge energy in the city right now with people desperately wanting change."
Siyamak sits down with Erica Sandberg, an independent journalist who reports on the issues facing San Francisco, such as crime, homelessness and the struggles of local businesses. She'll provide her perspective on what's going on in the city, and how local residents are finally fighting for change.
"We have just over $14 billion budget, and we can't keep our streets clean. That's insane.
We had 8000 People working in the Department of Public Health alone, and we can't seem to get people into addiction care? The corruption is off the hook," Erica Sandberg said. "It's kind of like handing somebody a tissue when they need chemotherapy.
Don't do that. And don't lie to people. Because when you do, money pours into those false solutions. And then you lose hope. And then you go, then you leave. And this is what we've seen."

If that's all that's on the ballot, then yes they will vote Democrat. Having lived in SF recently, I can tell you there's literally 2 Republicans on the ballot in all of SF, one runs for a SF Board of Supervisor seat from the Outer Sunset and the other challenges Pelosi for her seat in Congress. EVERY other person on the ballot is some sort of Dem... from sane reasonable Dem to Establishment Dem to Progressive Dem to Democratic Socialist. This is the key issue - there must be quality alternate candidates on the ballot that awakened voters can vote for to get away from the terrible politicians.

@@tabletalk33Where the heck is rock bottom? They’ll keep voting for the same garbage because the ones who vote aren’t the ones taking the consequences and the rest are living on government handouts and perceive Democrats as the source of their checks. Many, many millions of dollars have gone into so-called solutions to those problems. Does anyone think that if that money had really gone where it was intended the problems wouldn’t have seen some resolution? So where do you suppose that ALL THAT MONEY WENT? Democrats are always yelling about how humanitarian they are but contravening immigration law, subsidizing single motherhood but refusing to support families isn’t humane nor does it encourage people to live productive lives. Nor is refusing to enforce the laws or punish offenders because waaa, the criminals are now the victims because of their unfortunate childhoods. Humanitarians closed virtually every major psychiatric facility in the country and decided that it would be a good idea to actually provide addicts with the materials to pursue their addiction. Whatever the party was once, it isn’t anymore. San Francisco now elects vile persons like Weiner who think it’s a good idea to butcher children and take them away from their parents to do it. Treating the massive addiction problem is going to cost billions, it takes months of inpatient care to actually make a difference and even then the recidivism rate is frightening. If there is no legal punishment for possession, public drug use etc you’re never making a dent. And all that leaves aside the horrendous tax burden in California and the accompanying crippling regulatory state. There is a large number of elites living their best lives and padding their pockets and they don’t care a flip about the working people. If those working people are leaving, good for them. Many more need to get on the road to Florida, Texas and Tennessee because then who is going to funnel all that money into the pockets of those oh so humane politicians?

NYPD Crime Stats broken down by race
BROKEN WINDOWS AND QUALITY-OF-LIFE POLICING IN NEW YORK CITY, by WILLIAM J. BRATTON, former Police Commissioner
page 8: it lists two circular charts called Proactive Arrests and Victim Driven Arrests. They are classified by race.
      According to Bratton,
"In New York City there are intractable racial disparities in who commits-and, more importantly, who suffers from-crime and disorder. Blacks and Hispanics represent half of our city’s population, but represent 96.9 percent of those who are shot, and 97.6 percent of those who commit shootings.
For overall violent crime, 91.2 percent of suspects are black or Hispanic. For overall major crime, excluding burglaries and grand larceny auto, for which identified suspects are rare, 88.6 percent of suspects and 72.3 percent of victims are black or Hispanic.
      Bottom line:
"With regard to race, arrests for proactive offenses break down along percentages that are nearly identical to the breakdown of arrests for victim-driven offenses."

I grew up in Marin County including Sausalito and all over the rest of the Bay Area for over 35 years until I left the state in 2011. My heart hurts when I look how San Francisco has become since the Pandemic. I really hope that this beautiful city will rebound because right now, the city of Detroit actually looks better than San Francisco and the city of Las Vegas where now I live. Kudos to this channel for making people aware of the problems that need to be addressed. When I left California, Newsom was Mayor of San Francisco and WE all saw how that "unfolded"!!! The writing is on the wall so as long as the Democrats are running that state, things will only get WORSE!!!!!

You literally will have to adopt them, and take care of them for the rest of their lives. But who has not only the desire to, but also the funds to do this? What a mess.

I visited San Francisco a decade ago. Having lived in San Diego for 5 years at that point, my mind was blown out how dirty the city was. I've lived in Chicago and I live right outside Detroit and San Francisco was by far dirtier than both. Trash all over the place, I'm in the middle of downtown and there's a discarded sofa in front of a skyscraper.

I live in the East Bay, sandwiched between Oakland and SF in an island city (Alameda), reachable only by bridge and tunnel. I can see both skylines but can count on the fingers of one hand how many times I've been to both since 2020. (I grew up on the East Coast, living as close to NYC, and I was never this afraid to visit or work there. The difference is that in NYC there are still enough normal people and businesses left to be a buffer of sorts, and New Yorkers will fight back.) SF is a failed city and CA is a failed state, because so many have given up hope and voted with their feet. I'm getting close myself, waiting to see what the next election brings.
I sense that they're trying to turn things around in SF because it's an election year and former SF Mayor Newsom wants to be seen as presidential.
I'm registered Independent, but have voted Democratic at times. No longer. The party has lost my trust. This is not 'progressive' government. This is 'regressive'. No one is being helped.

SF and Oakland are lost. SF recalled Democrat DA Chesa Boudin. The problem is they elected a Democrat Mayor and she installed another Democrat DA Brooke Jenkins. You got the same results. How many times do you have to fall for the banana in the tailpipe? I have yet to see a Democrat who was tough on crime or who didn't fall in line with all the far left nonsense. They vote as a block. Your only hope is to vote for a tough on crime Republican and give them some help.

I agree. Any place, a city, a county, a state, or a country, is only as good as the leaders and residents in it. If the leaders are a bunch of crooks taking bribes, then they need to get rid of them and jail them if guilty. If too many of the residents are crooks and vagrants, then they must be taken into custody in special jails until justice can be served which best meets the needs of San Franciscans.

I’ve worked as a therapist in substance treatment in LA. You can’t get people sober into treatment with out real consequences. 90% of the patients are in treatment because they will go to prison or they will lose custody of their children. So removing consequences will not be an incentive to get into treatment. Allowing open drug use, decriminalizing drugs, all add to this. So choose one or the other but you can have both.

It’s not just your average person who doesn’t have a good enough job to pay rent that’s in the tents. It’s fentanyl addicts. It’s not working out for this city to give people needles and tell them to go ahead and smash windows to get their drug money. I will no longer be ashamed to say out loud that it’s not ok for some people to work to pay rent and be decent while other people do drugs all day and steal. Dean Preston needs to be stopped.

They embrace the idea of placing accountability on anything but themselves, that all criminals are protected classes that earned glorification. Its no different from Oakland or Richmond at this point. And unfortunately there are trends and common denominators with these cities.
It's bizarre to think that this current state of the city is embraced by the younger generation, and racial extremists.

I love San Francisco because in the early 70s I was stationed at Alameda and spent many hours walking and travelling by bus and trolley car. Two years ago my 36 year old son and I spent just a few days there we live in WNY and loved China town and seeing the amazing beautiful culture. Trolley car was not operational due to covid. It had changed so much since I was there but it was still SF. BUT... It did not feel safe at night and I am glad my rental car was in a parking garage. I have seen the homeless problem and it is such a dirty city now. We went to Mission District and felt unsafe it was early evening and we got a Uber and left without having dinner and I used to think your Mexican cuisine was amazing. You seem to have lost your pride in your city. In August I plan to revisit but will be parking my RV at a friends house and Alameda bringing my wife, daughter and granddaughter over by train. Want to take the Trolley to Fisherman's Wharf but I was very disappointed with the filth on my last district. It was total Helter-skelter at the wharf. I know our visit will be short with a meal in China Town which is sad because the city by the bay has turned into a dump. Also took a tour bus and I love history and culture but there was no one on the bus explaining the city and the tour was just boring. Loved your posting but your city leaders need to serve SF and not a leftist agenda.
