California is a strong brand, the state of new beginnings, dreams and movie stars, of surfers and a wonderful climate. But the Golden State is bankrupt and the city of Los Angeles is running out of cash. Public services are being cut and unemployment keeps rising. At the same time, optimism, entrepreneurship and the belief in the power of America are stronger than ever.
In Los Angeles, we meet five people who are going through a transformation in their lives during this crisis. Who are the pioneers who are reinventing the new America and how do they see the future?

I live in Seattle and live in an RV.....the doc has a political...philosophical agenda...Ax to grind......not all of us are meth or Heroin addicts......I have a full time job.......Republicans and Democrats do nothing for the working class....working poor...and the homeless.....the cops are mad that we legalized pot and they can't bust us anymore.....this doc on the other hand if it keeps tourist s out and people from moving here that would be great.......
I just can't believe that the father of the 40 Somthing year old son who spent most of his early life in prison, said that some body owes him something. why! we have a free will and should make better choices. Don't try to dump blame on anyone but yourself.
Breaks my heart to see this young couple who actually try and were a victim of circumstances beyond their control. Sad because they are good parents with two very loved little boys. Hope they find something soon, God be with them. I don't know how those politicians sleep

I admire the attitude of that young couple, staying positive and not blaming their employers for going broke and being forced to cut jobs.

What I really LOVE about this documentary is it shows sooo much HOPE. The American dream has not disappeared, It has just changed. I don't see it as "I must buy property to fulfill that dream." As a child of the '60s, I'm very happy to see the "commune" style of living come back. With the housing crisis, it may be the most fiscally sound way for people to live. I am one who still believes it takes a village to raise a child. Communal living does that. Happy, healthy children, are the new American dream. A dream that can come true.

There are special taxes and programs that only exist in Cali. From what I understand, there are lots of companies and other places that have moved to another state with lower costs to continue operating. I don't live in Cali, but have some family that does. Not sure how they are doing the past few months.

The real tragedy of California is that Norcal and Socal are like two different states. The Northern half is rural, ranches and farms; but Southern California has the big population centers, Hollywood, and Silicon Valley. The ranchers and farmers are stuck with the bad decisions Liberals make. I'd LOVE to return to Cali, but it's too expensive and drowning in ridiculous regulations.

harla ryder I agree with your sentiment. But here is the weird thing... the UN has set up regional boards that oversee towns and cities and counties. They tell our officials what to do and we have no power to change their agenda. I learned this when our zoning board went after me for raising goats on my inherited farmland. I found out they are zoning farmland residential, forbidding raising livestock or working fields, raising taxes, taking complete control of our land . The UN is doing this all over the world. It’s really good to know so we can maybe stand up to it.

I left the state of California some time around the time this was filmed. It worked out good for me. I'm glad i left. I've been back to visit a few times since including recently. "Summer of 2017" the problems didn't appear to get any better, infact it looked like it got worse. More homelessness, more disparity. One thing that surprised me was tent settlements on the side of the freeways that were not there when i left.... It was overwhelming and unfortunate.
If you happen to live near them you can expect to have your car stolen or at least broken into. The Meth heads ride around on bicycles in the area in the daytime casing things out.
I left California in 2007, but shortly before I did, Ive seen poverty and tent cities unfold into places they werent there before.

It’s really something else.. I lived in Venice before I moved and even then the homeless problem was getting bad but not as bad as it is now. It’s pretty shocking.

I'm from Calif. And I remember my first full time job, in 1981, with full benefits. Blue collar heavy work. And polotitians all echoed " change" " change?!!"...Yea, they changed things alright .
In 2000, I left my apartment at 3;30 am, while my neighbors slept in. I was not making it, but the woman on state aid received everything, including an extra $1,200 for reporting her mom driving the kids to school, which she did not. Oh...And the dad ,fresh from jail, lived there, but that was not reported ,so she received more. And neither worked. I could smell the 'weed' burning next door.....I live in Arizona now. And it's WAY BETTER. If folks are going to vote demacrat, you should stay in that disaster called California.

Lefty , I lived in NM for two years after leaving HI. NM’s level of corruption far surpassed HI’s & it was the Dem’s who were mostly responsible for it. Some places, like Santa Fe are ok still but NM is a blue state. Sad to say...

I was born and raised in southern California. I moved away when I was 19 yrs old. I'm living in Arkansas and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. This state is so different than other places I've visited in the past 20 or 30 yrs. We are extremely Blessed here, we are predominantly Conservative in our state, if you're not working, you probably don't want to work. After seeing what has become of my native state, I feel SOOOOOO Blessed By my Heavenly Father to live in this state, ARKANSAS!! GOD'S BEEN SOOOOOO GOOD TO ME!!

I'd disagree with at least part of your statement. Raise the rent a few hundred dollars and watch how many people suddenly become homeless. It is a greed deal, not just money greed, but, also greed for fame good numbers when they try to get reelected or go for a promotion. I am so glad I left that state after college. This coming from someone who was born and raised in Southern California and loved it. Now when I visit to see family, I feel made a wise decision to leave because it is so damn expensive.

Businesses can pay heavy fines for hiring individuals without proper tax identification or SSN.
