    This song always makes me cry. The title means "Oh my dear Papa." I adore Puccini's operas & Montserrat's voice in this aria is ethereal. Thank you so much for reviewing it. There is a 9 year-old Dutch girl named Amira Willighagen who sang her interpretation of the song. Perhaps you'd like to listen to her as well.

      Renee Fleming's is better IMO.
      Her 2010 rendition with the Berlin Philharmonic is the COMPLETE PACKAGE--better pacing & timing, and she shows the emotion fitting the subject matter of a girl who would rather die by throwing herself off a bridge than be without the boy she loves.

    OMGOSH .. I was in a trance during every note .. her voice displays so many emotions I almost cried. And that's why they sing like that @ the opera .. even if u may not speak the lingo .. ur eyes can follow the play & ur ears melodically transposes the story to ur heart .. then flows the tears. But right now the aforementioned trance put me in a great state of relaxation .. Bravo 👏🏼💐

My mother and her friend would watch operas on PBS, once I finally got hooked, they bought me a ticket. Hey Ty, sup. aug14_2 I am pleasantly surprised. You are proof that opera is an art form that will live forever. You may not be an operaphile, now or ever, but you at least gave it a try and your ears and spirit liked it. I didn’t become a fan of yours until you went viral appearing at a public hearing and spoke out against CRT. As is my habit, I was doing my daily search for any new uploads of vintage recordings of opera performances, and this upload came up when I focused on Caballe. I’ll just leave this here for whoever else might be interested.
    Factoids of note: Caballe was crowned La Superba by the italian press, Sutherland, La Stupenda and Callas, La Divina. Caballe was a polyglot, like her compadre from Spain, the living legend, the greatest tenor of all time (successor to Caruso), the King of Opera, the Great Plácido Domingo, who now does mostly conducting and sings the occasional age-appropriate stage role, and is a covid survivor at 80. Caballe was famous for her pianissimi (you know what that is) and one of her career hallmarks was a fully sustained final high note in the finale of the opera Don Carlo. Here’s a link for one example: ruclips.net/video/EcEsuRFvfyw/видео.html
    The text for O mio babbino caro and translated:
    LAURETTA
    (in ginocchio, dinanzi a Gianni Schicchi (Ski-KEY) [BTW, this one act opera is a comedy]
    O mio babbino caro,
    mi piace, è bello, bello;
    vo’ andare in Porta Rossa
    a comperar l’annello!
    SÌ, sì, ci voglio andare!
    E se l’amassi indarno,
    andrei sul Ponte Vecchio,
    ma per buttarmi in Arno!
    Mi struggo e mi tormento!
    O dio, vorrei morir!
    Babbo, pietà, pietà!
    Babbo, pietà, pietà!

    (on her knees, in front of Gianni Schicchi)
    O My dear father,
    I love him, he's beautiful, beautiful;
    I'm going to go to Porta Rossa
    to buy the ring!
    Yes, yes, I want to go there!
    And if I loved him in vain,
    I would go to the Ponte Vecchio,
    but to throw myself into the Arno!
    I yearn and torment myself!
    Oh God, I want to die!
    Father, mercy, mercy!
    Father, mercy, mercy!
    ~~~
    Paz y salud!
Amazingly she came to my city Tulsa Oklahoma for recital....... yeah little ol Tulsa. I sat on the front row. Front and center. I didn’t take a friend with me or nothing. Just me and Kiri. A magical moment for the stars to align like that and my dream to come true.
    Sorry to catch this late. Listen to Andre Rieu and Amira, O Mio Bambino Caro. The video is from 2014. If you enjoyed Monserrat, one of the top sopranos of the 20th century, you will enjoy Amira. Monserrat was towards the end of her career when this was done. She also made an album with Freddy Mercury of Queen shortly before he died.
Wouldn't surprise me ... she is that good.
    Caballe has such a pretty voice, and does this heavenly well. But I prefer the richer timbre's of Renee Fleming in her prime, although some today seem to like Netrenko for some reason I can't fathom. For me in her prime Fleming was just ethereal. Try her doing this. However Netrenko and Garanca do the Lakme "Flower Duet" is so angelic there is nothing to fault, although again, I prefer Fleming and Susan Graham. One of opera's most beautiful duets.
    Montserrat Caballe has a beautiful voice and does a outstanding version of this. I love the fact you reviewed this performance. As a young man I would never entertain the thought of listening to any Opera(I was a hard rock or heavy metal fan.) I remember my aunt Delores who took lessons singing opera, would take my sister to the metropolitan Opera in NYC when she was young. I decided to give it a chance live in person. My first Opera was Le Nozze di Figaro(the marriage of Figaro) I was captivated by the magic and power of the voices ringing out through the met. I was so moved that I bought season tickets the following year. With opera you don't always have to know the whole storyline(even though they translate for you on mini boards.) it is best to close your eyes and feel the music. the Aria" Duettino -Sull"aria"ruclips.net/video/fwSNMibfaRg/видео.html always has a special place as the first one that got me to listen to others and is worth a listen/review in one of your future broadcasts. it was also made famous in the movie Shawshank Redemption.
    May I recommend, IMHO, the greatest aria ever written, "Vesti La Giubba" from Ruggero Leoncavallo's opera, "Pagliacci", Pick an artist but maybe start with a version by Luciano Pavarotti. Do read a bit about the back story of the aria. Pagliacci, a clown, is betrayed by his wife, yet he is due to perform and the show must go on. From the get go the music will grab you and the anguish of our clown will break your heart.
