What am I missing. All I see is everyone loving his guy, and it’s clear why. He’s not afraid to be different, make people laugh, and have a good time. The word authentic fits him well.

    I just listened to Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" (2018), followed by Bebe Rexha's "Meant To Be" (2017). All of the reasons/excuses for Billboard's decision to remove "Old Town Road" from Hot Country Songs (e.g., lead artist not [stereo]typically associated with country music, strong hip-hop influence) easily could have been applied to "Meant To Be" -- yet I don't recall anyone being up in arms when "Meant To Be" ended up breaking the record for most weeks at #1 on Hot Country Songs. If Billboard had not taken the unusual action of removing "Old Town Road" despite the country airplay that the song has received, then we would be looking at "Old Town Road" possibly breaking the record that "Meant To Be" just set during the past year or so.

    On the whole “country/not country” thing, I don’t think it’s country at all, however, I also don’t think most of the garbage on country radio today should be considered country either, so for that, I think it should be able to be on country radio. Now saying that, I love the song. So many songs are called great just because they’re complicated, but this is just a jam. There’s a reason everyone loves it. It’s simple, easy to understand, everyone can sing along, all of the things that actually matter, and now hearing the dude talk about how hard he’s worked and how he just went for it, I like him even more. I honestly don’t think he’s gonna be a one hit wonder. I’m not even a rap fan, but I love this whole situation

    I'm so sick of people ALWAYS assuming it's about racism. If anything, it's because Billy Ray Cyrus is country and Lil Nas X isn't, so of course Nashville is going to congratulate Billy Ray. There are a few black country singers that are VERY popular: Kane Brown, Darius Rucker, Micky Guyton. Jordan Sparks and Nelly have also sang with country singers and had huge hits. To me, this song doesn't sound country as much as it's trying to imitate country music, though I love the beat and sound of it.

I got the same issue with Sam Hunt, Jason Andean, and just about everyone else on the country charts that mixes pop or rap with country. It’s not true to the genre. They might all be good in their own right but they need to just be rappers if they wanna rap 🤷‍♂️

      Centennial it has to remain some resemblance of where it started. I’m not saying everyone’s gotta sound like Hank Williams or Jimmie Rogers or anything. A great example is the band Midland as well as Chris Stapleton. Both have new and interesting sounds but remain obviously and firmly rooted, stylistically in country music. The artists I mentioned above as well as Old Town Road don’t do that. They use a completely different style of music and throw in key words (ie horse, old town, pickup truck, ect) or subtle banjo or mandolin in order to pander to today’s audience and claim authenticity.

    I am way more country than I am anything else and YES this is absolutely country!!! Every bit as much as the more 70s 80s rock sounding country songs of today, including rap and rock country of singers like, Big Country, Kid Rock and Jason Aldean to name a few, not to mention all of the rock-a-billy country sounds of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and the like!!! Billboard better get off of their racist arses and change their ways and attitudes or face no backing from ALL music fans, and a great big hunk of the music industry!!! Nothing against Billy Ray's collaboration, it's cool and all, but he sings how many lines or is it only the verse at the end that he sings?? Or if he does sing more I couldn't tell!!

    • @featheramericangoodeagle
      @featheramericangoodeagle 5 лет назад

      I agree. I think the making of this song is the following: Lil Nas found out that at the end of the day, it isn't about lifeless expensive material things, but about the pure and wonderful, almost spiritual connection with the horse (that has been stolen from the human race and replaced with something artificial and unrewarding), that really brings joy, happiness and completeness. That is why he sings, "...can't nobody tell me nothin'..." which translates into, "I now know the truth about why God created the horse, and I have discovered something about myself through my new acquaintance, this new re-introduction to this wonderful creature---seeing the world from the back of a horse is a fulfilling experience, and I love it."
      It's the basic things in life that bring us true happiness.

    It's not a racial issue at all, country music fans miss the older country sound with steel guitar and traditional waltz and two step beats, Charlie Pride and Darius Rucker did just fine in country music because they played country music. Its catchy and crossover songs that dip into different genres are not uncommon anymore, I say let the kid have his moment he has talent. His next challenge is to maybe step fully into one or the other genre and see how he does on either side i think it would be interesting to see.
