    It’s a draw for those who think that Magnus lost
    When your opponent doesn’t have enough pieces to mate when your time in the clock runs to 0 seconds,it’s a draw

    • @vibovitold
      @vibovitold 3 года назад +26

      to be more precise, your pieces are also taken into account : ) for example, knight + king versus a lone king is insufficient mating material, of course, but knight + king vs knight + king actually IS sufficient (for either side), because THEORETICALLY your own knight could be used to mate you (by blocking one of the escape squares of your king). it's not a forced mate, you'd have to walk right into it, but it's theoretically possible. so for this reason in some rare cases it is actually beneficial to have your last piece captured in an ending (and a smart opponent who's higher on time may refuse to capture it).

      @@bananas1055 draw. If one person loses on time but with the pieces left on the board, one cannot create a position that checkmates the side losing on time, it's officially a draw. If for example on side has a knight and the other a bishop then if one side loses on time that person loses Becaude you can create a smother set up in a corner and give mate with 1 bishop.

    I saw live today (29.12.22) during a world championship blitz chess game that Magnus came in late. The clocks had already started so he actually only had 37 seconds left when he sat down, and his opponent had 3 minutes. Magnus was even playing with black pieces, and he STILL won. This is also the day after he won his 14th world championship gold medal (this time in speed chess).

      @thistyme 9 лет назад +2

      +Penoreh_Getah It is called "en passant" From Wikipedia " It is a special pawn capture, that can only occur immediately after a pawn moves two ranks forward from its starting position, and an enemy pawn could have captured it had the pawn moved only one square forward. The opponent captures the just-moved pawn "as it passes" through the first square. The resulting position is the same as if the pawn had moved only one square forward and the enemy pawn had captured it normally."

      It's a special chess rule called "en passant" Here's the definition:
      en passant
      “A pawn attacking a square crossed by an opponent's pawn which has advanced two squares in one move from its original square may capture this opponent's pawn as though the latter had been moved only one square. This capture is only legal on the move following this advance and is called an 'en passant' capture.”
