I have a 52 built in 1939 that my uncle won the 1943 outdoor small bore national championship with. I also have his trophy. He shot 399/39X in that match. He shot on the r8fle team at St John's Military Academy, and my grandfather coached the team. I have both a Lyman Targetspot 10X scope and iron peep sights for it (Marble's front sight and Redfield peep). I also attended SJMA (1965-1969) and used it there. The other team members were shooting the latest Anschutz rifles, and I could always outshot them with my 52. Great rifles, truly beyond compare.

I've got a model 52b target rifle made in 1940.. excellent condition...and I would put it up against any rifle made...flawless in form and function....until you fire one and experience the trigger and build quality it is impossible to describe to someone...definitely the Rolls Royce of rifles.

I agree with you on the Marlin 39A. I was on a college competitive rifle team that had 52Ds from the ROTC . I loved these target rifles. A problem occurred when the army required the bolts to be stored in a separate location. We didn’t know about the complicated method of removing and reinstalling the bolts. We released the trigger pull which caused a few slam fires so they were replaced with Remington 513s. These were much inferior.

Well it's 5 am coffee time here in Litchfield PA. And a real treat this morning. A new posting in the 22 series. And a model 52 sporter. If I was only allowed one more rifle in my collection. It would be the model 52 winchester .22 . I would just as soon have the reproduction as an original. Thank you very much for yet another fine video in the 22 series. Some small game hunting friends of mine in our annual squirrel camp . ( yes squirrel camp) often discus the "Grand Slam" of 22 rifles. The 52win sporter,581 rem and the marlin 39 A. In that order seems to be the top three. Of course the win 9422, the browning T Bolt. And a list of others always are trying to be added. But the top three always remain. Thanks again,

I recently bought one of these rifles and I’m completely satisfied with the quality, workmanship and accuracy. I fitted my rifle with a 2-7X scope and it will group 3/8” at 50 yards with CCI Blazer, Federal Match, and American Eagle.
With Federal 550 and Winchester white box bulk ammo I still get 3/4” to 1-1/8” group at 50 yards.
I have bought some Eley yellow box target and some Eley black box match ammo to try out. I’m really interested to see how it does.
I would like to lighten my trigger a few more pounds and read something about a “lawyers pin” that will not allow the trigger to be adjusted below 5 pounds. I’m not sure the pull weight on my particular rifle but it does seem somewhat heavier than what I would consider to be a precision trigger.

4 in a group with a flyer, pretty consistent. That would likely be solved by a bit of glass bedding. Watch some of Cavedweller1959’s videos on accuracy and bedding. • @CumberlandOutdoorsman
      @CumberlandOutdoorsman  3 года назад +4

The CZ 457 might be the best made .22 rifle on the market today (although that is a matter of opinion), however the Winchester model 52 is no longer commercially available. I have shot the CZ 457, and must say that in terms of construction it lacks the level of quality that the Win. 52 clearly has. For example the locking system of the CZ is simply the bolt handle base against the rear of the receiver. I realize that the .22 cartridge doesn't produce the same pressures as most centerfire cartridges do, but in my opinion the bolt handle should be for operating the bolt, and locking lugs should incorporate the action lock-up. The one I shot had a safety that operated in the opposite direction of what I am accustomed to, but that can be tolerated. That being said, CZ's are relatively accurate shooters, and many folks that own them swear by them.

Folks ….times have changed. This year at the ISSF 3P men’s final at the world championships in Egypt there were no CZ or Anschutz rifles on the line. Out of 8 shooters 6 were Walther KK500’s one Bleiker and one G&E . I also own a Win 52C that i shot in high school and a Anschutz 1813 supermatch that I shot competitively till about 6 years ago. Both very accurate rifles. What has changed is the ergonomics. The loading ports are moved so far back that breaking position is far less, in turn yielding better scores. Also the stocks are so adjustable that now you can VERY accurately dial in your position. Still love the old rifles but the above mentioned ones are now in the Olympic spotlight.

Beautiful beautiful old winchester. not impressed with some of that ammo however. would like to have seen the mini-mag accuracy. I've had Marlin Mod 60's that would put 15 shots in that little red dot but I was using a 4.5-14x42 scope, from a solid rest. It's easy to do when one can aim at the exact same spot each shot. Takes all the guess work out of it. As far as accuracy in a 22 rifle; I believe the Ruger 77/22 is the most accurate I've ever shot. At 25yds, I barely could see a different hole out of 10 shots. It was incredible not to be some expensive bench rest competition rifle. Enjoy your vids very much.

I have a 20 gauge Browning BPS that was made there. In all the years I owned it, that gun has taken hundreds of quail, dove and clay pigeons, and never failed to fire, eject, load or shoot, and after thousands of shots it is still as tight as ever. The tooling in those Japanese factories is more precise, and tolerances are more exact than ever before. If you don't believe me look it up, and if you are still not convinced....oh well to each their own. @@danmarcell3167

It is a very nice rifle and I am sure it shoots great but to say it is the best ever made is a stretch. From studies I have read done on .22 long rifle rifles it was found the best most accurate .22's were all made in Germany and in the United States the Remington was next. The 10/22 Ruger actually did quite well but I did not see a Winchester in the finals.

    • @CumberlandOutdoorsman

The German rifles are superb, no doubt. I have held some of the finer Anschutz bolt actions, and can appreciate the fine workmanship. I own a few German (Weihrauch) made air rifles, and they are truly of utmost high quality. The reason I titled the video that way was not a statement, but merely a question to fellow shooters.

@@CumberlandOutdoorsman I think the term "best" is subjective and broad anyway. To some (including me), I think that the model 52's design, craftmanship, eye apeal, etc puts it up there among the best overall 22's in my opinion.
Are there more accurate .22's? Sure, but unless you are competing for an olympic medal, the difference is immaterial for most of us shooters.
There is no one gun that is the most accurate AND the lightest AND the best designed AND the highest build quality AND the easiest to clean AND, AND, AND......
That is why we all own several guns. I own the Browning 52 reproduction and love it. I have not owned some of the higher end .22's discussed like Anschutz but I do own several high end guns and this 52 would be one of the last ones I sell. I can not think of a bolt action .22 that I would want to replace it with.
