Her Formula in this project: I Cup Latex Paint - Matte or Satin 2 Tbsp. (heaping) Salt - "pickling" type 1 Tbsp. (heaping) Plastic of Paris Preparation/Instructions: Into a container pour the paint. Measure and toss in the dry ingredients (Salt & Plastic of Paris). Stir until well mixed. I kept wanting to see the Yellow peep through in this project.
I was going to buy a sign from amazon for my yard that would take 6-8 weeks, but now I think Im going to make my own :) You make it look so easy & fun to achieve your desired look. Wish me luck!
Beautiful job and good instruction:) You can use Vaseline for the edges, much cheaper than bees wax. Also, for even more cracks, paint with Elmer's glue before a final coat and it will make huge cracks:) Love your salt idea, you go girl!!
If you don’t have Vaseline, you can also use a regular white candle, It works really well too! And since it’s smaller, you have more control if you want to do some designs or outline in small places
I bet you’re right! Sea… salt. Sea Spray. The table I have is SUPER old. It is wood but I have no idea what kind. I cleaned it up and it’s one solid piece (on top) I’m thinking it’s going to soak up so much expensive paint. Do you any tricks up your sleeve for putting something on the top first before I use paint? I have stain, would that help?I forgot about this one but I did make your sand & plaster of paris. If ever I want to change it up, I can sand it off, right? I found a table “workbench” that’s going to look super cute using this technique. 💕
Love this technique! It's the most authentic, aged paint finish that shows paint layers. It's interesting that you alternate the chalk & salt wash paints. I've used Elmer's Glue (the regular school glue) thinned slightly with water & brushed on prior to the top coat to create authentic cracks - very inexpensive. The top coat also needs to be thinned down & brushed with a loaded brush (brushing back & forth removes crackle). Thank you for sharing your tips!

I just found this video today, over a year since you posted it! I love this look and plan on using it on my shiplap boards (before they're installed) when we do our front hall in the Fall. I love shiplap and I think your technique will take it up a few notches to get that 100 year old look! Great job! Where in Ontario are you, I'm also in Ontario, I live in Oshawa. So glad I stumbled upon your video!😊
Very interesting technique. Thanks for sharing. I've never seen something like this in real. Should be fun to try out. Is there a way to also have the text looking old and chippy? Did you seal the paint/text?
Can I use this mixture on my terracotta garden pot with my chalk paint to give it an aged texture and not a flat look? I've seen that Dixie Belle do what they call Seaspray, is this recipe similar? I live in the UK and don't want to pay £15 plus postage for it! Your sign looks fantastic!!
Amazing! For my Family this will make perfect Christmas gifts for each of their homes and styles. Florida residents LOVE these southern style antique looking chippy signs!!! So so Cool. Can’t wait to dive in with this One! Love Love Love!!
Hello this is a wonderful technique! Do you let each layer dry, and if so for how long, between layers? I also have a drawer I found in the trash somewhere, it is pre stained and finished, should i sand the stain off, or is it ok to work from there up? Thanks so much!!! Love your items
Great technique and instructional! We almost expected to hear the sign was flipped for 50,000 USD. :) The chamfering of the corners on new sawn cuts on new stock and on older commercial furniture pieces when repainting is done adds a little insurance that the paint or coating (s) will adhere. We did a similar finish years ago using gesso and polenta and a bunch of hand sanding.. Great job!
Hi! I’m trying this process on uneven barn boards with slats. It’s quite uneven. How do you lay the graphic after it’s sanded to accommodate for the slight levels? Do you cut the graphic to fit each board?
I just bought an large, antique apothecary cabinet that when it was advertised, it had the best 100+ years of patina on it but when I went to go see it, they had painted the cabinet a bright white and sanded the drawers, all that patina GONE. I still bought it tho and was thinking how I was going to make it look like it had a 100 year old finish on it. This will be what I’m going to do with it. I know it’s going to take me a LONG time since it has 18 drawers and it’s a large piece but I think it will be worth it to do this project on a large scale. Thanks for all your painting tutorials.
I love the result! If I want to make the salt wash from my chalk paint instead of latex paint would you still recommend using the plaster of Paris with the salt?
Did this a while back, wasn't grainy enough, searched everywhere for something to add to my paint. The answer? Skittles! Covered in paint, you have no idea, plus a variety of sizes, I pulled out the XL ones. And I think I've tried everything in my kitchen, but Skittles are crazy obvious.
I love your work, and you're clearly an expert crafter! The music in the background is horrible, though...I almost couldn't get through the tutorial! I couldn't turn it down because I wanted to hear you but that music was torture, lol.
Hi there, this looks awesome when finished and looks fun to do!! Could you please tell me if I could use acrylic paint instead of latex paint? Thanks so much! ♥️♥️🇦🇺

It's me I am just very sensitive to stimuli and most you tube music to me is annoying and takes away from the focus of learning. I wanted to know if in fact do you ever seal this and if so with what? This is one of my very first video that I made and I wasn’t all that good at editing so that would be why the music is so loud my newer ones are much better. I sall this up with a water-based poly acrylic sealer and you can also use a wax
Sorry, one more question, have you ever used this on new raised tin? I have a piece that is from the 1800’s and a new piece of tin that I would love to look like the 1800’s.
Well shoot I’ll have to go back and watch I haven’t made salt wash paint in a bit but I think I have a project to use it on so will have to do a new video 🌸
So glad you found me! Love new crafting friends. Hope you find lots of great content. I use a poly acrylic sealer water based to seal most of my projects
Hi, when making your signs with the salt wash paint what is the wax you put on first and why do you apply that? Do you need to add it? Also do you have a link for your chalk paint? Thank you x
Thank you so much! I have 40+ pieces of embroidery to frame and this just really opens the door! I could see doing this on cardboard if it was layered and, oh my! THank you!!
I tried to make salt wash paint. It clumped up and was unbrushable. I followed your recipe from video. Any clue what I did wrong? Could it be the paint? I used Rust Oleum Painter's Touch satin latex
Hmm I am unfamiliar with that paint so I’m unsure. Not to worry though you can always add a little bit of water to the formula to make it not so clumpy. You can also cut back on your plaster of Paris. I only mix what I need for that project also because it will dry out really quickly ❤️
If you’re using chalk paint, you would have to leave out the plaster of Paris, because that is already in the chalk paint, and then your soul wash would be very stiff and clumpy
WONDERFUL! You are talented as a teacher as well as art. I am wondering if humidity would break down the paint? In humid Florida twice I tried using a salt lamp and there was a pool of water on the table because the salt absorbed moisture from the air. Anyone have experience with this issue? I supposed it could be sealed very well but then sometimes that looks plasticky, at least on chalk paint it does.
Hi Barbara, I'm in NC and when it's humid and I don't have my A/C on, my salt lamp sweats too. I first I thought there was a defect in it but then I looked it up and it is normal. I haven't yet tried any salt wash finishes but I hope to soon.
@@justdi3347 The salt lamp is very messy and for that reason I stopped using it. But I love the atmosphere/ mood it creates and supposedly it is healthy. I have so many projects going at the same time that I totally forgot about this one. I will put it on my list. Thanx for your comment.

Salt Wash recipe: 1 cup flat latex paint, 2 heaping tablespoons of salt, 1 heaping tablespoon of plaster of Paris. Thank you!
Okay this might seem like a silly question but can we use the pink Himalayan bath salts from dollar tree 😂 it’s coarse and it’s salt haha

I Cup Latex Paint - Matte or Satin
2 Tbsp. (heaping) Salt - "pickling" type
1 Tbsp. (heaping) Plastic of Paris
Preparation/Instructions:
Into a container pour the paint. Measure and toss in the dry ingredients (Salt & Plastic of Paris). Stir until well mixed.

That is so so gorgeous 😍. Pickling salt is not easily available and very expensive in my country. Would it be fine if I use sand instead?
Sample not work as well because you can’t use a sander to remove the sand. It will stick in the paint, but you could use any type of salt.

I supposed it could be sealed very well but then sometimes that looks plasticky, at least on chalk paint it does.
Thanks so much! 🌸I appreciate it. We don’t have humidity problems here in Ontario 🇨🇦😜
Could I use baking soda instead of plaster of Paris?
Yes you could try that! It doesn't work quite as well but it does do ok :)
Can you use baby talk powder instead of plaster aparis?
No it doesn’t work as well
Thanks for the insight. Great job.

How long should it take to dry? I applied the salt wash 48 hours ago, and it still feels soft
It will all depend on your weather and humidity! If very humid will take a lot longer! Try setting it right out in sun ☀️
Our Upcycled Life thank you so much!
can you use calcium carbonate in place of plaster of paris
I have never use that product, but I know lots of people that do when they have good success
Love it, Susan Dalton England
Thanks for watching Susan ❤️ hello from 🇨🇦
Awesome video! Question. For the lettering. Did you paint it or did you use vinyl?
Thanks for watching 🌸 I use medium transfer method with mod podge ❤️ here is a link to a few videos where I show how I do it

Thank you! I was just thinking how did you apply that method on the chippy wood you just did and there’s no white that transferred. Only the lettering did.
what can you substitue plaster of paris with?
Only PoP will work for this recipe. But I do have a few other techniques with salt that will work :

Do you really need it?
I have never woodworked before watching you. Thank you. I have the bug now and have started buying tools and having a go. It is surprising what I have achieved. Good but surprised the heck out of me. I am truly grateful. Laser printer next on list. No stopping now. Cheers from Down Under- Australia

Wow, that's really awesome!

I was looking for another technique and this was recommended, and I’m so glad. This is a new technique to me, tho I’ve tried my own “aging” technique. This takes it to a whole new level. Great job!

You bet you can. It will just make a more chippy layered look ♥️

Would I need to put a sealant on it to put it outside?
Yes, I would still with an outdoor polycrylic sealer
