  • This was filmed at The Model Railroad Club, Inc. of Union, NJ, on our massive HO scale layout. We are open to the public from 1 to 4 PM on Saturdays, and we have our annual Light & Sound Show on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in November/December. For more information, go to: www.tmrci.org
MTH recently released an HO scale Dash 9. I got Norfolk Southern #9250, in the Operation Lifesaver scheme with Proto-Sound 3. Overall, it's a great locomotive, but a few of the MTH proprietary features can get in the way a little if you don't use DCS.
One of my favorite features (which I forgot to include in the video) is the sequencer pedal. F11 activates a long-long-short-long sequence that is timed exactly like the prototype. It can be heard in the title shot.

Would love too. Don't know how easy it would be because of cost and the fact that there are 2 other locos I also really want too.

Hi, I have watched many of your tutorials and I thank you for sharing your knowledge, they are very good. Maybe it is not the video, however, I have some MTH Dash 9 proto sound locomotives, and all of them, they run 10 seconds, stop, run for 1 more second and repeat it a lot, do you know why it does this? I have restarted the loco several times!

Reminds me so much of Reading. Lots of D9s with lots of K5s.

I purchased the MTH NS Horse Head model Dash 9. The DCS issues are a thing of the past as far as I can see.
I programmed the cab number with my NCE Power Cab at home. Then took it to K10 Hobbies (look it up) to run it on the huge layout there. Using JMRI and Engine Driver on my Android phone I can use any of the 28 functions anytime I want.
I expected SOME issues with the MTH Dash 9 but haven't found any at all.
The detail is awesome and so far, 2 weeks, no broken parts or parts falling off.
Ditch lights flash when sounding the horn. And the sounds this thing makes draws a crowd whenever activated.
    The horn sounds especially real.
The only real oddity is you'll have to carry the manual around with you until you can remember some of the "F1 - F28" functions. They are mostly different than other decoder F numbers, plus there's 28...wow.
I'm already looking to buy another MTH product because of the fine job MTH did with this one.
Good review thanks for the video!
    Jeff

Thanks! Yeah, the DCS issues aren't as big as they were, but I haven't been able to program any CVs besides the road number. There is no manual for which CVs control what, and JMRI won't read or write to my Dash 9.
Also, the front cab door window on my engine keeps coming out. I've already had to open the shell and glue it in, but it came out again. And the snowplow won't stay on, this week it even fell off during a busy Saturday and it got ran over in front of all our guests. But overall, yeah, I really like the engine. I'll probably end up getting another one or two.

+Amtrak706 You know...My plow was popping off and I happened to be standing there one day as it happened. I could see it snag at a low spot in the trackage and it popped right off. I took the plow over to the work bench and shaved off some off the bottom of the plow and haven't had an issue since.

Amazing model! I subbed. I am currently modeling a CSX/NS joint line (already have NS heritage "Southern") and I was wondering, how much does it cost?

It looks like one ditch light is brighter than the other. I have an Atlas Dash 8-40cw (video on my channel) and it's the same way. Is this normal and how can I fix it or can I even fix it?

    • @amtrak706
      @amtrak706  7 лет назад

Honestly I haven't really noticed a difference in brightness on the Dash 9. As for your Dash 8, no it is not supposed to be like that but I have had that exact problem on at least two different C40-8Ws, so it seems to be some kind of manufacturing quirk. I haven't tried to fix mine, but the first step would be to see if it's actually the LEDs or if it's just that one light is not shining through the lens fully. Not sure how to open up the ditchlights, sorry. But after that I would see if I could get it to stay properly mounted, or if the LEDs are actually different I would just get a couple new replacement LEDs.

Amtrak706 thanks. I'll probably just leave it. I'm not very good with that kind of stuff. Will probably be getting the MTH Dash 9 with my birthday money.

Amtrak706 I love the automatic uncoupling on mth locomotives. Will I be able to use this feature on my EZ command?

I need to get a dash 9 but don't like the remote couplers they stopped Makin them because they were having problems. They can cause the board to short out has I found out.

Get a ScaleTrains unit. I made this video 6 years ago when the MTH units were the newest, but ScaleTrains has since come out with a far superior offering.

i really wish MTH would make it easier to run and program their locomotives this is the main thing keeping me away from proto sound but i still buy DCC ready.
