Consider yourselves lucky. In Vietnam, scamming is a national sport and it could have been much worse for you. In Vietnam, I got my passport, credit cards and other things stolen 5 times in 2 years. Replacement cards got lost in Viet mail, never arrived. Immigration nightmare took two months, two sets of tickets burned in the meantime. Guy on a motorbike ripped wallet right out of my pocket, I ran after him through traffic screaming bloody murder but nobody cared to help me. At least six foreigners (including a Russian woman with a child) got cut on the streets with machetes on the street for nothing and the police was mostly concerned with shutting the victims us, preventing them from talking to press. Making sure the story is never punished. Gov't only cares to protect the money that comes from tourism, not tourists themselves. Vietnam has more scammers per capita than anywhere else I've seen in the world. Decent foreigners almost never go back to this scam land; Vietnam has the lowest return rate in all of Asia (only 5% of tourists return - mostly broke ones).
