- I got asked a lot for a playthrough of this solo that I recorded for Ayreon back in 2018 for the Source album.

@@EmilStuenes sorry man, no tab, but in the video you can see what i play, it are all Ab major arpeggio's in all positions, standard triads ;)

This is one of the most incredible guitar solos I've ever heard. It hits right into your heart while staying both heavy and technical, and never fails to make me feel something when I hear it. It's also great that both you and Arjen are active on youtube so people like me can not only find this stuff, but also put a face and their words to the music we hear. Bravo!

Marcel is een geniale gitarist, Anthony weet voor zijn geweldige projecten unieke muzikanten te verzamelen. Stuk voor stuk “one of a kind”…..teveel om op te noemen. Zo krijg ik ook steeds weer kippenvel van de stem van Damian Wilson, zoals in “and the druids turn to stone” live in Tilburg….
I have heard a tons of guitarmusic in my 58 years (Rock, Metal, ProgRock, Jazz, Alternative Rock) and I have to say: This is clearly one of the best guitar solos ever! unbelieveable good. bravissimo, marcel and greetings from a german neighbour.

It's so refreshing and heart filling to see the live performances (unfortunately only on discs) and the joy that the musicians radiate; especially Marcel is a pleasure to watch live. His awesome skills and the face, the movements...

My favourite solo in 2018, and it quickly became one of my favourite solos of all time!
Gilbert and Govan may have some cool phrasing and shredding, but you tied it together with the magic of bends and a recurring melodic theme.

I listen to Yngwie, Joe S, Steve V and John Petrucci and this still stands out as an incredible solo in an incredible song.

Seriously that's the solo of the reccord...and given how amazing this album is is quite a statement. I'll also confess I had no idea who you were and then you throw that in my face! Amazing skills and cheers to arjen who always manage to use all the musicians he choose in a way that is always better than in their own bands like he just know how to use all the potential from everyone he works with. Amazing job marcel!

Seriously brings me tears of joy whenever I listen dude. So glad you worked on this and the live album. Back in 2005 my buddy use to show me videos of you playing and I couldn't remember your name then when I saw you where on the source I got excited to find you again.
Easily my favorite solo from the album - hearing this made me look you up and discover Sun Caged. I've listened to The Lotus Effect dozens of times since then, it's great!
One of my all-time favourite albums too my friend! Such an undiscovered gem of a band was Sun Caged - I recommend them to every prog metal fan I know, and they are never disappointed.

Easily one of my favorite solos of all-time. I know nothing about playing guitar, but it reminds me of Gilmore's in Comfortably Numb. My lack of knowledge not withstanding, I guess that's a compliment?
Yes. This is exactly the feeling I get from this song as well. I think it's the harmonic progression, from dominant (in a minor key) up to the flat-VI (G major to Ab major) on the last bar of the phrase to the first bar of the next phrase. But Marcel absolutely kills it - best solo of the album, hands down (and Paul Gilbert has a doozie on Star of Sirrah).
