    The Gullfoss is an incredibly intelligent plugin that in real time will listen to your track, either on your master bus or individual elements, and decide what needs boosting and cutting! On top of that, you can shape it, so it’s not just a dynamic kind of tool. In many ways, it’s far superior to a multi band compressor because it is looking at 20 - 20k. It’s looking at the whole frequency response, the whole time!
    On top of this being an amazing plugin, our friends over at Soundtheory were gracious enough to give us 3 copies of the Gullfoss to give away to YOU!

    What I like the most about this plugin is the fact that it’s very 21st century, it’s very forward thinking, and it’s not relying on old ideas! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got an SSL, Pultec’s, and old emulations, but I do like the idea of taking all the information that we’ve acquired over the last 80 years (or so) of recording music and apply it in a more forward thinking way.
    I can definitely see myself using the Gullfoss more and more to identify issues and solve them, and as I get used to these controls, I can see myself using them to mix quite effectively.

    I know this video is over two years old but, I think bias is less about high/low and more about helping the program decide whether to recover or tame a given frequency. More bias favors recovery, negative bias favors taming. Great review!

    Full disclosure, I was turned off when I read the newsletter for this video, for some fear of an auto-Q removing the human element that emulated EQ's almost force into the mixing equation (a bit bullheaded and biased, I know). Your demos have completely turned me around on the plug-in. It's such a fantastic thing for refining a mix, 'cause I've definitely been sat staring at an RTA trying to reference problem areas from an unbiased ear; and that this covers that and more is very smart, and - as you said - incredibly forward thinking. I'll definitely be entering the giveaway (and who knows, might just buy this sometime in the future if I don't win it)!

  • @MichaelHattem

    Am just demoing this now for the first time. My initial impressions are that it can really help with clarity in a mastering context but that it's very easy to overdo. I've found settings around 10-20% on both recovery and tame work best without being too heavy handed. If you need more than that, I suspect you're better off going back to the mix itself. But I've also noticed that there seems to be some M/S processing happening as well. In one mix i used it on, it provided much more clarity to the center but my guitars panned pretty hard L and R did not seem to be affected at all. Either way, it's a really amazing tool that like all other amazing tools needs to be used judiciously. Also I agree with someone below who suggested presets for individual instruments or busses as it really does seem to be setup primarily for working with program material.

    Totally agree with your point of you. It's fine that companies give us emulation of the old stuff but musician/producers/engineers need also experimental tools to improve and be creative in their process. if you think about it the technology and the music has a great relation. Experimental innovation like the electric guitar or the synthesizer has changed the way the music is made.

    Nice plugin review and tool, still coming back to your experience with making the right settings! I have a side question, OK to use a compressor at the end of send effects channel, I'm working with Abbey Road Chambers and Plate plugin, I noticed depending on settings there's some volume peaks and things being added, love the acoustic properties and demission sound but feel sounds is better by controlling the peaks, just don't want to lose anything I might not be hearing, slight compression nothing too drastic. I'm using the FL Studio, Waves SSL on individual track channels, master bus JS37 and CLA Mixdown, nice haircut by the way! Ciao, ALDO

    I use Studio Reference cause of phones. And And then like 2 steps after I pull it for render. I'll listen for odd parts, just cut out tiny thin areas doing odd tingly, or mud, or hum. Then last EQ try to lift & flatten, then just touch up areas. Brighten or Bass A tiny bit. Not much, I did that in mix, thus why cuts and the re EQ after.

    I like the idea very, very much! Because I'm lazy? No, because it's incredibly fast and can react to different situations in a more sensitive manner. Although the effect was more pronounced on the drums and the bass synth, I was more fascinated by its performance on the vocals. It was reacting to two frequencies somewhere around 230Hz and around 400Hz and pulling them out. However, it looked like there has been a boost of the low lows on each instance. That may need some controlling. But I really like it! And I'm pretty sure, people will scream that it's the end of mixing. A little like the reactions towards Melodyne and it's kin.

    Yeah so bias and brighten were totally used wrong here.. I understand you don’t necessarily have the time with all you do but for the bias there’s the outer vertical line that you use to get the sweet spot ( you basically want it to disappear).. beneath the eq there’s a horizontal white line you want that to zero out as well by negative or positive brighten.. love your stuff ..✌️

    So do you think Gullfoss should be applied on seperate busses (or individual tracks), on the master track, or both?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  3 года назад +1

      I like to use it sparingly on events that need it and if it gets used on the master bus it’s only for small tweaks!

    Sounds like an interesting plug in and one that could be used for a variety of tracks or just at the end - I don't think it takes away the human element as really your ears ultimately control the end result or direction you go, this plugin just allows you to maybe get there a little quicker/better? Anyway thanks Warren another great and informative video tho at $250 Aus I might have to wait a while.

    Agree 100%. There are obviously good sides to knowing the original mechanisms -- what you learn about sonics from learning to use an EQ correctively is huge -- but if these things can be automated so that time is saved, and to allow for foolproof creative use of EQ for shaping and balance, I'm all for it. I have Oeksound Soothe and Zynaptiq's Intensity, and Gullfoss seems to be doing something from both worlds.

    Warren thanks for another great video/review. My opinions but moreover APPRECIATION. Plugins emulating analog gear... we have long since arrived. And by all means developers please don't stop. I am truly facinated by each side of this coin. I am super curious about this trend ...intelligent plugins for a digital universe...no analog equivalent. My ears tell me Digital has done analog due dilligence...So much so I don't even notice anymore (my ears). Now days (for me) once “the numbers are in the box as intended” so to speak, all bets are off. I wanna manipulate that sound and have the tools needed to make the sound in my head happen through the speakers etc... but wait, here we go again...just like Analog we twisted electrons in AMAZING ways... created sounds literally UN-heard before. Even used the technology to resolve itself. And the result for the effort: Analog CLASSICS we know and love. Same approach, now only Digital. Plugins that do amazing things and have no analog equivalent. I'm facinated when I see stuff like this. It makes me think some a future producer searching for “classic 'intelligent' DAW plugins circa 2018”. To get “vintage digital sound”.Just like we do now for analog. And as a note to all makers of plugins.. thank you for doing so. It allows me to own gear I would never have been able to own, but thanks to your skills I can

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Billy, I do agree with you! Definitely 100% believe there is a place for both approaches! Doing brand new ideas, pushing the boundaries and also emulating classic equipment. There is definitely a balance there!

    I hate it doesn’t have presets. I use it for eq suggestion on individual parts, and most times it gives me a wayyyyyyy better mix suggestion than I would have come up with, But I found it does make everything too bright and you have too come to your logical senses every time lol

    i've recently fell in love with the Luftikus by lkjb eq plugin, i find it great on vocals and woodwinds, though it also has a mastering mode, and a very interesting keep gain function, anyone have experience with this plugin or type of eq similar to luftikus? cheers, and thanks for another amazing video warren..

    • @janminor1172
      @janminor1172 6 лет назад +1

      Yantho WeepingHorn Luftikus is also great on electric guitars. Remove the mud at 40Hz, add mids to your liking and crank the air band at 10K, and the guitar cuts through your mix!

    • @joechapman8208
      @joechapman8208 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, Luftikus is really good. It's amazing how much a high price tag will make us overlook things that are cheap and free, when there are so many top class effects in the low-/no-price bracket

    has anyone ever used FreeFilter directX plugin?
    it came out in late 1990s.
    * it could Learn the eq curve from a World Class Mix of a song (like Toxic - BritSpears)
    and then apply it to your mix in whatever strength/percentage you choose.

    I like new technology but it's kind of weird the plugin always want to recover quite aggressively around 8-9 kHz whatever sound it analyses.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 лет назад +1

      Hi corner liston thanks for the comment! I hadn’t noticed that on my mixes as much. I imagine that is dependent on everyone’s specific . Mixes and their listening environment that makes those frequencies more or less evident.

    • @alf3k1
      @alf3k1 5 лет назад +1

      This is because it works after an A-weighted curve, giving you ears a "natural" sound and those are the related frequencies that you ears cannot hear correctly in nature (to put it simple). That is the whole trick really.
