When I was a kid and saw this movie, I didn't get why the room was green. Then when I visited the Philippines when I was 19, I woke up to thunder and it was raining so hard outside that the white fluorescent light from the streets looked green coming in the window and my hotel room was exactly like Liu Kang's.
Shang Tsung definitely isn't the merciful type. Breaking Chan's arm was bad enough but then he went and broke his spine just because he wanted to hear Chan cry out in pain as Shang Tsung enjoys making his enemies suffer before he takes their souls.....
Well, the facial expression from Shang Tsung when he threatens Liu Kang that he is coming for him next can be a bit difficult to intimidate someone as it looks slightly laughable. But the facial expression Shang Tsung makes after his human face shifts into an undead one is inarguably inhuman and terrifying.
I love that green hue in the room. I remember that scene stuck with me as a child. That room looked so cozy with the green lighting and rain dripping down the window.
This really is an amazing recreation of a nightmare. The ominous atmosphere, the blue tint hanging around in the environment --filled with the absolute sheer horror and dread of a nightmare. Where all you can do is be completely at the mercy of whatever is transpiring in the dream; totally victim tp whatever is taking place. Especially with the way Lui's broth Chan calls out his name one last time before Shang Tsung descends upon Lui in the dream as he decays away into a putrid demonic entity. This is one of those cases where the actor and overall appearance on screen does not match with the original source in any way, but still looks menacingly stylish. You don't see an old wizard, but you just KNOW immediately that is Shang Tsung. So happy they brought him back for MK11.
Shang Tsung changes ages throughout the series. He starts as old in MK1 but is made young again in MK2. After that his age corresponds to how much power he currently has so he can become old when he is weak but become young again by consuming souls. So it's actually canonically correct just not strictly to the timeline of the first game. MK2 was already out by the time this movie released and we were seeing press for MK3 so young Shang Tsung was indeed a thing by the time of this movie.

Well, for me, both, Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 and Sonic the Hedgehog from 2020 are the best video games movies of all time. And the intro song from Mortal Kombat always gets me to dance to it's rhythm.
Fun Fact: in the novelization of the movie it's explained that since Liu Kang had left for America. The Order of Light named Chan as The Chosen One to represent them in the tournament. Shang being the boss that he is decided to pull up and shut all that down while everybody was sleeping and Chan was the only one outside sweeping and challenged him. And you see the result right here.
Shang Tsung knew that Chen wasn't the chosen one. He did everything he could to take the easy way out by fighting and killing Chen, to kidnapping Sonya in attempt to get another easy win. Shang Tsung did not want to fight Liu Kang at all! This is why I love MK '95. Despite a few cheese moments, the story was deep and the action was good.
I have two fond memories about this movie: Aside from being ultra hyped for it, I remember going to see this on opening night. I was 13 and I went with my little brother Chris and my cousin Jason (who I was named after). It was in Puerto Rico in a theatre inside a mall called Plaza Del Caribe. We had a ball watching it. My other memory was that they use to play movies for us at lunchtime in my junior high. It was to give us options. Either, we could stay in the lunch room, do whatever in the yard or we could watch movies in the auditorium. They only played 3 movies for us: Speed, The Mask & Mortal Kombat (and occasionally The Pryde Of The X-Men tv pilot). I remember that the kids cheer loudly for the Scorpion/Johnny Cage fight. I miss being a kid.
There’s no other movie to hype you up like this intro. Even without the gore the movie was still a 10/10. They literally hired the best actors for each character
This is why Shang Tsung wouldn't make a good martial arts teacher, he'd cripple or kill all of his students as he'd forget that he's only training people, not engaging them in mortal kombat.

That mongolian throat singing is amazing. So much detail that I missed. This film was amazing ! it really captured the essence of the first three MK games.
Wow now thats what you call a flawless victory. Chan didn't get a single hit in. Even that kick at the beginning completely missed the mark despite Shang Tsung being right in front of him . Clearly Chan was trained by Grand Master Scrappy Doo and Grand Master Mister Magoo.
Kung Lao: "We never should have left the academy." Liu Kang: "Do not blame yourself for Chan's death." Kung Lao: "He was my brother too, Liu!" Scorpion: "You too carry the flames of vengeance?" Liu Kang: "Shang Tsung killed my brother before the first tournament." Scorpion: "He and Quan Chi will burn for their crimes!" Johnny Cage: "So your brother and Jin aren't a thing?" Liu Kang: "He understands Jin's interests, but does not share them." Johnny Cage: "Social Media ain't going to be happy hearing that." Liu Kang: "I appreciate you helping me free Chan's soul." Kitana: "How else am I supposed to receive his blessing?" Liu Kang: "Haha...fair enough." Cassie Cage: "So the chosen one's got a little brother?" Liu Kang: "What's with that tone in your voice, Cassandra?" Cassie Cage: "Oh, nothing to worry about." Shang Tsung: "Your brother's soul is mine." Liu Kang: "Release Chan's soul now!" Shang Tsung: "ONLY through Mortal Kombat!" Liu Kang: "Why didn't the gods protect Chan?" Cetrion: "Why didn't his older brother?" Liu Kang: "I can't be everywhere at once." Thot-del: "The Chosen One's brother would make an excellent concubine." Liu Kang: "Mileena shan't lay a finger on him!" Thot-del: "Who said anything about Mileena?"
So did Robin Shou as Liu Kang. You can tell that as Liu, Shou channeled the conflict that he faced in running away from his destiny along with the guilt over not protecting Chan and the anger he felt for Shang Tsung. Trevor Goddard also did a good job bringing Kano to life despite the fact that in the games, he was Japanese American. They changed him to Australian.

That mongolian throat singing is amazing. So much detail that I missed. This film was amazing ! it really captured the essence of the first three MK games.
no one will ever say the iconic line better
We want Another Mortal Kombat movie with the same Cast & New Story ✊🔥
Let’s hope Shang has this awesome skin the game💪🏼
I'm hoping for Liu Kang and maybe Raiden to have movie skin for DLC!
When you're Chinese and get an A- on your report card.
He was also unprepared to deal with Shang Tsung.
This is unironically one of the best intros to a movie I’ve seen.
As a kid I used to think if you played against a mirror match as Liu Kang, the recolor was his brother
That would actually be a cool detail for MK 11. Though I know they won't do it.
Kung Lao: "We never should have left the academy."
Liu Kang: "Do not blame yourself for Chan's death."
Kung Lao: "He was my brother too, Liu!"
Scorpion: "You too carry the flames of vengeance?"
Liu Kang: "Shang Tsung killed my brother before the first tournament."
Scorpion: "He and Quan Chi will burn for their crimes!"
Johnny Cage: "So your brother and Jin aren't a thing?"
Liu Kang: "He understands Jin's interests, but does not share them."
Johnny Cage: "Social Media ain't going to be happy hearing that."
Liu Kang: "I appreciate you helping me free Chan's soul."
Kitana: "How else am I supposed to receive his blessing?"
Liu Kang: "Haha...fair enough."
Cassie Cage: "So the chosen one's got a little brother?"
Liu Kang: "What's with that tone in your voice, Cassandra?"
Cassie Cage: "Oh, nothing to worry about."
Shang Tsung: "Your brother's soul is mine."
Liu Kang: "Release Chan's soul now!"
Shang Tsung: "ONLY through Mortal Kombat!"
Liu Kang: "Why didn't the gods protect Chan?"
Cetrion: "Why didn't his older brother?"
Liu Kang: "I can't be everywhere at once."
Thot-del: "The Chosen One's brother would make an excellent concubine."
Liu Kang: "Mileena shan't lay a finger on him!"
Thot-del: "Who said anything about Mileena?"
Liuuuuuuuuuu!!!
lol
I always die laughing at that lol
Luke Skywalker - Someone is calling me
And then he died
You will be next!
Ah when I was 4 years old... My interest in martial arts expanded further
No body says “Your soul is MIiinnee” better than Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa. He is the perfect Shang Tsung. 👌
Yep. Bruce Locke was nowhere near the intimidating level that Tagawa was as Shang Tsung.
@@ladyfire44 I agree. I reckon they should even have Tagawa play the older Shang Tsung in the new MK films too.
I first saw this film on video. My cousin, who was in high school, wanted me to see it. I was barely 11 and I loved it!
That fucking trench coat is the absolute BEAST! I must have it.
New line cinema makes so many great movies! Rush hour 1-3 and then you have this legendary movie Mortal Kombat 1995.
Dude, He just stomped his fucking back!!!
The hype for this was simply unreal
Shang Tsung carried this movie, to be honest.
Cary did a fantastic job with Shang Tsung. Maybe the best performance in the movie but the whole cast was excellent.
Johnny cage did
@@HOTBOYHOTFINDS eh cage was ok but without shang tsung this movie would be forgotten
Letting the theme start at the New Line Cinema logo was a genius move. Never forgot this studio because of this. Lol
Every real life fight battle needs to start with this song
this fight does a GREAT job at showing you what this will be, mortal kombat. like the blows here from shang have weight behind them you feel the dudes pain
