  • Laxå flygplats 2019-04-17. A speed test has been on my list for a long time, and now is finally the time. The structure is optimized for light weight and hovering flight, which becomes apparent in this speed test where the back side of this design surface, namely high drag. Sitting in the chAIR it fees pretty speedy but the actual ground speed of around 50km/h is not very impressive. There is still headroom on the throttle but when flying the vehicle it is apparent that air resistant becomes a significant counterpart around 50km/hand the overall flight efficiency drops. A maximum practical take off weight test will be carried out later on this spring.
    163kg TOW, 35kg LiPo currently mounted on the craft.
    Typical hover efficiency 7.5-7.7g/W
    Setup:
    FC 5x KK 2.1 running stock 1.6 firmware
    Motors 76x Multistar Elite 5010 274Kv
    ESC 76x afro 20A HV, with one extra 63V 330uF low ESR capacitor fitted to each ESC to handle the long current path from battery to ESC.
    Batteries 80x Multistar 4S 5.2Ah
    RC 5x Turnigy TGY-i6S Digital Proportional Radio Control System
    All of the above purchased from Hobby King.
    Total cost approximately 10.000USD

    Is there a reason why you are still using a timer on a manned drone? To me it would make more sense to have a voltage display or a "Fuel Gauge" seeing as how you are physically on the aircraft. Very cool project and i'm looking forward to watching more of it.

    • @amazingdiyprojects
      @amazingdiyprojects  5 лет назад +114

      Well, I want to answer simplicity, but when doing multiple start and stops, using a timer is not a very simple or accurate method of keeping track of how much flight time you have left. The thing is, that I started out having the battery bank fractionated for redundancy so that to get an accurate picture of discharge state I would really need 20 voltage meters, but now two flight seasons later, seeing how evenly the batteries discharge there really is nothing wrong with just sampling one or two battery packs for a good enough indication of overall battery status.

    • @fanplant
      @fanplant 5 лет назад +11

      Maybe you could automate the timer to start and stop according to a minimum throttle speed of a few of the controllers? Or a few ground switches on the bottom of the chair? Just curious, wonderful build!

    • @franks_nl
      @franks_nl 5 лет назад +23

      @@amazingdiyprojects Wouldn't you simply need the minimum voltage displayed? After all, if one of your packs is nearing critical low, you'll want to set it down anyway, right?

    • @DirtyRobot
      @DirtyRobot 5 лет назад +3

      Fuel gauges are not practical in this type of prototype.
      A timer is going to give you a end time within a known safe period. Ignore the timer at your peril.
      I would suggest tripping the timer on arming like you can do with most RC models though. Having to split your attention and remember to arm the timer each time is a problem waiting to happen.

    Hi, With the 17x5 props, you are currently displacing 1135ci volume of air per a single rotation. With the maximum amount of static thrust being at a ratio of 6 in forward propulsion to every 10 in diameter, a 14x8 prop would give you slightly ( just less than 10% ) more static thrust (for lift), but would increase your speed in forward propulsion by 60%. If it creates too much load on your motors or ESCs, you could go with a 15x7 which would give you about 6% less static thrust but still gain 40% more in speed. Hope this helps and Happy flying!

    • @RonALampman
      @RonALampman 5 лет назад +4

      @@peterzingler6221 Actually, it's the a ratio of 10 diameter to 6 forward is the perfect pitch for lift to get the smallest diameter prop without loosing lift. Unfortunately, most props are made at a ratio of 2 Diameter to 1 forward at the most but that is an easy one to find props for such as my hex with 15x7.5 props.

    • @RonALampman
      @RonALampman 5 лет назад +2

      Over the 10x6 ratio and you start loosing lift efficiency, draw more amps, but gain speed. Under that ratio and you've lost both lift efficiency and speed.

    6:28 You compared the drag coefficient of a sphere (0.47) to a streamlined body (0.04). In fact the value for a cylinder perpendicular to flow ranges from 0.7 to 1.2 depending on things like surface roughness & Reynolds Number. However since the craft pitches relative to the direction of travel, there is no way to properly implement a streamlined cross section, so what you have is as good as it gets.

    I think 50 kph is a great speed. When I was a teenager and got my first moped it was restricted to 30mph/50kph.
    It would be great, now that you have this built to refine it and make it more efficient but at the same time it is an amazing thing you have achieved and there really should be an award presented to you or some kind of sponsoring.
    I love your videos and wish it was me in your seat

      Or replace the batteries with super capacitors

    • @-Burb
      @-Burb 5 лет назад +3

      Daniel Hughes
      That would make battery life even worse. Supercapacitors just exert energy faster, meaning they would have much worse battery life than batteries.

    • @shurmurray
      @shurmurray 5 лет назад

      @@-Burb One of major advantages of supercapacitors - virtually unlimited charge-discharge cycles. The catch - energy density is too low to replace regular rechargeable batteries. On a bank of supercapatitors of the same weight as li-pos - expected flight time will be something like 30 seconds instead of 10 minutes...
      PS: it needs an arc reactor :)
