As for India and Indonesia, they are still among the poorest countries.

In 2000 China's GDP per capita was only $878, almost 20 years later in 2019 it's $10,262. Amazing growth considering it has 1.4 billion population!

My family moved from Korea to Turkey in the 1966 for economic reasons. You Koreans grew your economy so fast that my family returned to Korea 25 years after moving.

To those asking where their country is: Lebanon, Palestine, Oman, Kuwait, Georgia, Mongolia, Armenia, Qatar, Timor-Leste, Bahrain, Bhutan, Macau, Brunei, and Maldives all have _less than the 5 million population_ to make the chart. _Personally,_ I think in most dynamic per capita charts it makes sense to leave off the very small countries because their small size means their qualities are so volatile over time. However, it might be an idea to generally produce two version of the chart, one with countries over 5 million and an extended one with all countries.
This is assuming the extra work involved in making the extended chart would be minor, which I am pretty sure it would be.

Don't confuse between Income and per capita GDP. Not everyone earn 70kUSD in Singapore.
Unlike Hong Kong, Singapore didn't invest its entire economy in finance only. They also did a lot of investment about industry, while Hong Kong lost most of its industry many many decades ago. Singapore also has a good education system, plus a really good geography for trade. So Singapore can do things like get crude oil, turn it into value-added petrol, diesel, things like that, and resell it to the world. In short: engineering, not only finance.

The truly praise worthy asian countries are Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Israel.
Japan has the most well diversified economy and their companies are world class. Japan is a leading country in science research, sports, cultural exports and military. South Korea nowadays is achieving similar levels of success of Japan. Well both Singapore and Israel are very controversial countries. Some ppl will hate it some ppl will like it. But they are smaller countries with smaller population. They have so many societal and geographical challenges with fierce competition from the rest of Asia. Yet, they are so well managed. And Israel continues to grow as a high tech-starting hub & Singapore continues to become a regional hub for finance and tech. I think these are 4 examples that are worthy of taking note of

So, its not true to say that the particular geography of a country inherently allows countries for better development. Actually, if you look at the per capita gdp growth rate of Asian tigers when they reached 10,000 usd as the gdp per capita, the former Asian tigers grew way much faster than China now. China actually on a per capita basis was as bad as Africa until 1990s and only now it became a middle income country recently. To be really frank, their economy is slowing down very fast even before escaping the middle income trap. There is one case of Israel that actually had a head start than the Asian tigers and experienced 2 decades of slow growth. But they went through a total societal change to get out of the slump and have explosive growth in 90s again. Such thing won't happen in Xi's regime.
By the way if you lived in Hong Kong and Singapore, you would understand they are not similar at all and their economies and societies are totally different; they went on a very different path of development. If you have lived these countries, you will realize that Singapore and South Korea are better than Hong Kong and Taiwan purely based on economic prosperity

I know it's a joke but just so you know, countries with less than 5 million people is considered as “tax havens”. Which makes them easily to have high GDP per capita. So it's pretty much unfair to other high population countries. That's why Wawamustats doesn't include them.

India's per capita income is very low . Even lesser than 2000$ . Think tank recently said that India GDP per capita will reach 12000$ in 2050. But it only happen when India per year GDP growth remain 7% . But Indian Economy will slowdown in 2030 because India will become more Economic prosper . If India want to be a developed country until 2050 our government should implement 2 child policy . Because our population will never let us to reach 20000$ per capita income

Even having in consideration the differences in cost of living, and india being a cheaper place to live; your acquisitive power is still far lower than that of the USA, Europe, most of south America, most of asia and a good chunk of even Africa. And in regards to China, remember that you were actually above them in the 1980's gdp per capita wise; however China since then has continously growing and improving their salaries and living standards far quicker than you guys. Nowadays the average chinese is 5 times richer than the average indian, and the gap continues to grow more and more
