    I got one recently.It's cool to have but i agree it can be dangerous.Keep out of reach of children.Don't shine in mirrors,windows and other glassy objects that can pontentially reflect back into your or somebody's eyes.I don't shine it South outside my house cause we got multiple close neighbours.North of us is an open field which is perfect for using it as long it's clear of farmers.

    So going out side in sunlight your eyes are exposed to a pretty high amount of IR I can't imagine a low powered green laser with some leakage causing issues unless you stare into the laser or a reflect into your eyes for a period of time. I mean if it was say over 100mw yeah get some protection but at the lower level doesn't seem like that big of a deal. I work with a lot of IR related stuff with satellites and I can say for a fact your more likely to damage your eyes being out in direct sunlight.

      @@vincenttremblay2580 I'm far from an expert here, but one thing that nobody (at least in this thread) is talking about is how MUCH of the laser's total output power is reaching the destination in the form of IR light. The vast majority of the IR light generated by the laser is converted into green light and only a small fraction passes through, surely. To determine exactly how dangerous it is, we would need to know what the power of the residual IR light is for each of these pointers, and compare that to intensity levels known to be dangerous over a given period of time.

    Survival Lasers (The company from the link you listed in the video description) has a pair of goggles that protect your eyes from these dpss lasers. They are only 60 bucks too, which is only $10-20 more than a pair that wouldn’t block unfiltered IR light. Just pick those “Eagle Pair® 190-540nm & 800-2000nm Laser Safety Goggles” even the $50 “190-540nm & 900-1700nm” pair would suffice.

    IR wavelength laser emissions, pointed from any distance into an eye, are going to be very likely most hazardous. When using these green laser devices emitting around 530 nm, of the power and technology you're discussing, and pointing the beam either into the night sky for amateur astronomy purposes, or bouncing its brilliance off a painted white interior wall surface, from say 5 to 20 feet away, under such conditions how would you judge safety? That is, when the beam will always be pointed directly away from any person's eyes? Very interested in the risk assessment for that type of use of these devices. Many thanks indeed for your excellent video presentation :-)

      @@RAT_666 No answer. An answer is out there somewhere! My guess would be that bouncing high intensity green laser radiation off a reflective but diffusing painted white wall surface, from a moderate distance, is more than likely safe-ish-as it’s the focused, collimated beam that can burn? 🔥 I invested in validated eye protection to wear if using devices indoors for educational purposes.

      Prolonged exposure to IR radiation causes a gradual but irreversible opacity of the lens. Other forms of damage to the eye from IR exposure include scotoma, which is a loss of vision due to the damage to the retina. Even low-level IR absorption can cause symptoms such as redness of the eye, swelling, or hemorrhaging

      It can take a LONG time for regulations to catch up to technology...even decades. Sometimes just ignorance, sometimes political forces at work.
      Also, short-range scanners like those SHOULDN'T require much power at all, and the amount of time actually on a given spot on the retina would be minute. Such SHOULD be safe for even prolonged exposure at less than 2 feet...BUT for various reasons may be unsafe (including aging of things like capacitors used in the power regulation circuitry, or damage/misalignment over time of any optical filters on the scanning assembly).

  • @exgenica

    At about 05:57 - 06:01 you state the 532nm LASER pointer you are showing is "rated at 35mW", yet the label clearly rates it at < 1mW (a Class 2 == Class II LASER). I see similar disparities at other points in the video, but the image at this timestamp is very clear.

      It's been 2 years, but still let me correct you...
      These cheap 301/303 lasers are manufactured by Chinese companies, and are way beyond their shown limit of 1mW or 5mW, they can be of 50mW or beyond, they can burn matches...
      I don't know why companies do this false branding, but it's dangerous, for people who don't know much about lasers

    • @diliff
      @diliff 5 дней назад

      @@TheStarDreamer I'd say Chinese companies do this because they want more sales and aren't bothered by the ethics of mislabelling the lasers. They can market them as being much more powerful, but if the label says they are 'safe' then it's less likely to be banned or withdrawn from sale. Essentially they get to present the lasers to buyers as being powerful while presenting the lasers to regulators as weak and safe.

      Yes, for class 3B lasers or less than 500 mW, if the beam is fixed and shined to the wall, you should be safe. However, if you shined the laser to any glass e.g. a window, the IR laser may be reflected to your eye so, you need to be very careful on which surface you are lasing.

      It can reflect off a shiny surface and you can't see that. Little holes can get burned in your retina and there is no treatment or recovery possible.

      well its not a big deal for small powered lasers, but for higher it is when using the laser you cant tell when that IR is bouncing off some wall or reflective material, thus having a higher chance of prolonged focused light in ur eye that can lead to eye damage

    here’s something i just discovered last night and think it’s pretty interesting. i’m not a nerd so i don’t understand a lot of this stuff, but anyway i got a green laser from ebay it’s supposed to pop balloons and light matches but it doesn’t. it does produce a small amount of heat after several seconds. now the interesting part, if you shine it on any part of your body where you have a tattoo it burns you pretty quickly, why is this??? i also done an experiment on a balloon using different inks and markers but the only one it responded to was the tattoo ink. can you explain??w

    • @captainjacksparrow1518
      @captainjacksparrow1518 2 года назад +7

      Dark colours absorb light. Your tattoo is darker than your skin i presume and that's why it burns. Matte Black is probably the best to absorb.

    • @SpeedKing..
      @SpeedKing.. 2 года назад

      @@gregoryratliff73 it must be a more absorbent color and material. They absorb more energy and so get hotter. Try doing the opposite with a reflective mirror like material and it won't get hot.

    • @dakotaturner7792
      @dakotaturner7792 2 года назад +4

      I would presume it is because a tattoo is quite literally microscopic pieces of metal suspended in ink that gets injected into a layer of your skin. So your tattoo is metal and ink trapped under your skin and metal is very conductive.
