This video should have millions of views b/c it’s absolutely amazing ! My hair is basically copy paste to yours and I desperately needed a haircut. Hairdressers always turn a simple trim into something else & charge $100 + 😣 I tried this out today and I seriously can’t thank you enough. I haven’t loved the way my hair looks in such a long time ❤
Oh my goodness thank you so much, I’m so so happy it worked so well for you!!
I wholeheartedly agree! After being unable to see my former hairdresser due to not being able to get a response to schedule a few years ago, I found this video. This is the only video I use, trust, and share because Marisa is amazing! 💞
I have exactly the same challenge - even the most modest salons want to charge $100+ for a basic curly cut. Insane.
Just wanted to say thank you for this video! I was close to spending $200 for a curl-by-curl cut, but thanks to you, I gave myself the best haircut I’ve ever had!
Oh wow really?? That’s so amazing 🤩
Me too….I don’t trust hairdressers to do what I ask so this is super helpful
Awesome! Good of you to let her know you appreciate the video. I haven’t tried it, but I do too.
You literally cut your hair like a curly hair stylist would well done it looks beautiful
The ‘curly’ hairdresser I went to recently didn’t do this which is why I think I ended up with a weird shape which didn’t work for me. I’m going to do this in future and will save on stress and money. Thank you so much for sharing
I just watched this with my wife, and I'm tasked with giving her a cut. I'll be watching it again, but this was so helpful. Thanks for posting.
Oh wow well done!! Let me know how it goes 😃
how did that go
Came across this yesterday and I now have a beautifully layered curly cut thanks to you. Thank you so much for taking the time to make such a high quality, useful video ❤ I can honestly say it is the best curly hair cutting video on RUclips 🤗🥰
I’m desperate for a cut, & this tutorial gives me more confidence to do my own. Thank you for this! Your curls are beautiful. 🥰
You are so welcome!!! Thank you 😊
Thank-you so much! Had a haircut 6 weeks ago that was fair but the hairdresser didn’t really know how to cut curly. My hairdresser before that is just too expensive to keep up with them regularly. Your video gave me the courage to try again (I’ve cut my own hair many times before). Super happy with the way it looks and I haven’t even washed and styled!❤
I’m so so happy to hear that!
I just wanted to thank you for this content! Since quarantine last year I had given myself one haircut with the curly girl tutorial and it was OK.
This one blew it away!
I gave myself the best haircut I’ve had in my whole life thanks to you☺️
I appreciate you sharing your wisdom and gorgeous personality with us all. Thank you so much!!! It’s so empowering to be able to do this for myself🌟
Oh wow I’m so so excited to hear this!!! I am so glad 😍
You're tutorial was great! I've been cutting my own hair for years now but lately I'm losing my curl towards the back part of my crown (menopause). Being more specific and focusing on each curl, although very time consuming is definitely the way to go. Thank you🙏 I'm looking forward to my next trim.
I hope it works out for you!!!
Omg! We are hair twins. I have same curl patterns, part and the gray streak 💕
Thanks for sharing your techniques! It’s painful to pay someone so much $$ for bad haircuts
Oh really that’s so cool!!
This is so helpful!! I’ve been cutting my own hair for years as no one near me can cope with waves/curls and I leave looking like Hermione the early years 😬 I’ll definitely give this a try, I think it will turn out much better!!
I feel this. Just spent $300 on a cut to look more Ike a lampshade
Thanks for this amazing video.. I've been looking for a local curly girl hairdresser but you've given me the confidence to try it myself..
Oh that’s amazing!
THANK YOU for this!! My hair was in dire need of a trim and reshaping. Your video made it easy to understand how I can do my own cuts and do them to my liking! Saved me so much money. My hair thanks you!!
I love this! NO one has ever cut my hair like this...I feel like most hairdressers don't understand curly hair! I'm going to try this as soon as I feel brave enough!!
Thank you so much! You’ve given me the courage to try cutting my hair. I’m never happy with the pros, so why not? You’re hair is gorgeous!
Let me know it goes!
I've been watching hair cutting videos over the past few months bc I need to cut mine but I didn't feel confident in my ability to try the cuts I've seen but this video is perfect & I'm trying later today
Oh that’s so exciting! Please let me know how it goes 😃
I followed your haircut tutorial 2 weeks ago and I wanted to thank you sharing! My hair had lost volume and definition and it is now voluminous and I have great definition!! I am so happy with the results!
Thanks so much for this. I watched your video yesterday and had a go myself afterwards. My husband told me that my hair looks better and I got complimented at work today. Thanks so much for all you do 😊
Oh that’s amazing to hear!!!! I’m so glad it worked for you!!! 😍
I did the same thing! I couldn't wait 2 try it out myself.
Hi, I just found your channel and I love it. I live in Tijuana, Mexico and here I couldn't find someone to cut my curls. It's been almost 2 year without a haircut but now I'm definitely going to try to do it myself. Thank you so much for this video ❤️.
Aw I hope it helps!
OMG, thank you! My hair is shorter than yours, but I think I feel confident enough to try and trim it a little. I've been unhappy with my stylist for so long now, I don't think I can do much worse.
I hope it goes well!
Thank you for sharing this video! I’m in the process of repairing my hair from 25 years of heat styling (every day!) 😢 I didn’t want to do a big chop and this tutorial helped me create a wearable pretty hair style for the in between stage I’m at right now. Thank you, thank you!
I did it last night and took off about 2 inches to get rid of ratty ends. Took about an hour (I have 2b-3b hair and I had to reassess each area as my curl pattern changed.) It looks great and I feel confident in my ability to do it again! I didn’t do much shaping as my hair is super long and wanted to keep the length.
Oh that’s amazing!! Well done!
I cut my own hair for the first time recently and it turned out so well my wife wants me to give her a trim. I knew nothing about cutting this type of hair (my wife is aware! Haha) before I watched your video and now I have a solid baseline to work with. Thank you!
That’s amazing! Please let me know how it goes
@@MarisasCurls It turned out pretty good! She's happy. Thank you again!
Wow, I’m so impressed with your ability to cut your own hair! I may get brave and give it a try.
Thank you!! It’s definitely easier than it looks 😄
My girl 😍 you just saved me a trip to the salon 😁 such a great tutorial thanks so much ❤
You are so welcome!
Finally someone who has my hair and understands the need for good top layers on the sides! Thank you!!
I’m so glad this resonated with you!! Some stylists seem to think layers means making it a bit choppy at the front but when I say layers I mean 360 degrees lol 😅
Thank you so much for this. My hair has exactly your same curl pattern. It’s been getting longer and this will help me avoid salons that want to cut too much off. BTW you and your hair are so beautiful 😊
I am thinking about cutting my hair soon and my mum will do it but she needs some ideas for my hair, this came at the perfect time
Aw that’s great!
Your hair looks amazing! Thank you for the tutorial, you make it look so easy to cut your own hair though !! 😊💕
Aw thanks so much. It’s honestly not as difficult with curly hair 😄
Cant wait to try this! I'm in Iowa & where i live a curly cut is $80, which to me is ridiculous!
Thank you so much for showing me this awesome way of cutting my own hair, my hair came out just how I like it 💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
You're so pretty and I love your accent. You did such a good job.
Thank you so much 😃
Thank you so much! I think we might be hair twins. I've cut my hair most of my life, but never got very long because I tend to do a chop, which leaves my hair really big and fluffy.
I think I'll try small snips more often and see if it helps.
Thanks so much for the tutorial!
You are so welcome!! I hope it helps 😃
@@MarisasCurls Me too! I just cut inches off and it never occurred to me go go curl by curl. I'm the only one with curls in my family so I'm learning as I go. And wearing a lot of kerchief to keep my flyaways from being too distracting.
Thank you so much. I've had a hard time finding someone e
Who cuts curly hair, and some obstacle always pops up. I have curly hair since it grew back from chemo and it's about the same length and type of curls. This is what I wanted for my hair. I'll be doing rhis soon. Now i jave an idea of how to cut it. Your's look great!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It brought my curly hair back to life! 🎉
LOVED your video, I have combination curls also.
When you wear eyeglasses and they constantly move down the nose this is a huge pain. Thank you for the upload 💛
Beautiful, articulate, and easy to follow. Thank you!
Thank you. I have your hair texture but the length is down to my tailbone and unpredictable. Every stylist I’ve gone to has been scissor happy and made it look rectangular with no shape!! Theres one person near me that appears to look skilled but wants 165 for a curl by curl! Just did it myself and its the best haircut I’ve ever had. I will definitely look into your channel and try some of your routines/tips and tricks to make my curl pattern look as presentable and hold as well as yours! This is a PSA that if you have long curly hair and your thinking of doing this, it makes a nice U at the back and tying your hair up looks voluminous and even!!
I’m so so glad it worked out for you!!
wow your hair is so pretty. i will try this tomorrow x thank you!
Thanks so much
Thank you so much! I needed a good cut as my last was a pretty significant chop right before Christmas. I was was happy with it once my hair settled down but my schedule is bonkers right now. My hair is pretty darn happy!
Amazing! So glad it worked for you
You have dream curls, soo beautifully defined. Thank you so much for this video! :)
Aw thanks so much!
Your hair came out gorgeous!! Well done, you. 👏😁
Thanks so much!
Hey guys. I hope you enjoy today’s video! Check the description box for links for the scissors and clips.
Ask any questions in the comments!!
Thanks so much for watching.
Hi Marisa! Thank you SO much for all you do 😊 Stunning curls, beautiful cut, gorgeous all the way around. Did you have an initial diamond haircut by a stylist to create a “foundation” so to speak and then you’ve been cutting your hair ever since or did you cut the original diamond cut shape yourself? Thanks in advance and oh! Thank you for the awesome tip on taking the fringe to the side! Suuuuuper helpful 😃
Thank you so much! No I didn’t have that shape done by a stylist. I did have some existing layers but not enough. I think the shape I have now just evolved over time as I got better at cutting it. I did have one curly cut in 2019
@@MarisasCurls wowzers! that is so amazing to know! I appreciate your reply 🙏🏼 I’m super excited to keep cutting my hair now knowing this 😃 Thank you so much again 💃🏻
I was waiting for this! So helpful! Thank you, I know it must have been hard to film. You really explain your cut well!
Oh thanks so much!! I’m glad you found it helpful
Nice! How do you tell what hair you’ve already cut when pulling the second third sections out of the clip. The first section you toss the cut pieces to the back but that isn’t possible with the subsequent sections. Ty!
You can tell by looking at the end of the curl. Its quite obvious if a piece has been cut or not 😃
Your hair is so gorgeous!
Thank you so much 😊
Thank you for sharing this technique, Marisa! I've seen other tutorials that highlight different approaches but this one has me feeling more comfortable about tackling a substantial style change and not just the timid trim job I've been doing for four years (which hasn't really rendered good results). Wish me luck! :)
Oh that’s amazing!
Great video! Your hair is gorgeous!
Thanks so much
Great info. Also I think everyone should try the side part now and then. I love it on you.
Haha thanks. I’m team side part all the way!
@@MarisasCurls Same here, I'm a little older and grew up in the seventies and parting down the middle always reminds me of those haircuts, they've been around forever.
Haha my mum always says the same thing!
It looks really nice. My hair is all one length and waist length. So I just straighten it and put it in a ponytail then reach behind me and pull the hairband down to almost the end of my hair. Whilst keeping it as straight as possible. Then I just pull the hair forward to the front and trim below the hairband.
We have almost the same pattern, gonna try this tomorrow. Tyvm ❤
I hope it goes well!
Hi Marisa,
Thank you for this video. Your hair type is almost identical to mine and sadly very few hairdressers ever cut wavy/curly hair well. I have ordered my own hairdressing scissors and a few hair clips. I noticed you cut your hair when dry. Please can you let me know what shampoo and conditioner you recommend.
With much appreciationa and thanks,
Adele
First of all, your hair is gorgeous! Your video is great, thank you so much!!
I’d love to have you cut my hair 🤭
Ordered my scissors with your link. THANK YOU!
You are welcome!!
@@MarisasCurls With your help, I feel very confident that I’ll be able to slowly trim my curly ends; especially using the proper tools. I’m also growing my hair out and don’t want to trim off too much.
I cut my husband’s curly hair and this has been so helpful!! Thank you!
I’m so glad!
I tried your technique and I think my hair looks good. I’ll have to wait and see how it curls after I wash it as my hair always curls more after a haircut and a wash.
I mainly needed layers because my hair was all the same length and I didn’t like that because I was not getting enough volume on the top of my head.
Thank you so much! This was an excellent tutorial for my curls! ❤
I’m so glad it was helpful!
You make this look so easy! I'm wondering, is there a reason why you use third day hair instead of on wash day once it's dry?
Oh I've been waiting for this vid. I love your hair length and shape and Its my goal.... My hair is too short atm so I'm trying to grow it out but it's a wee bit trianguly..... Gonna try over the shoulder, fluff and mirror to see where I can improve later (day 2 hair). Plus am glad you use noughty as I can get that here in Ireland. Also I bought the exact same scissors about a month ago but have been too afraid to use it! Thank you so much for sharing this. Your hair is stunning x
Oh I can’t wait to hear how it goes!! I’m sure you’ll do a great job
I thought the same thing 2, then I saw your hair. My hair is about the same length as yours Marisa & that's the looks I've been looking 4!
Oh great!!
Thank you. I have naturally curly hair too. Your hair is GORGEOUS! I have been leaning toward cutting my own hair for several months now. I found you when looking for some instruction.
Thanks so much! I hope the video helps 😃
My mum used to say that curly hair was cut differently but none of my hairdressers have ever done it like this, they usually wash it, straighten it and then cut it….you might just have saved me £50 a month 🥰
Waiting for my scissors to arrive from Amazon today 😅
Oooo this is exciting! Can’t wait to hear how it goes. Straightening your hair to cut it really doesn’t work well for curls, even a regular wet cut is better than that.
This si really helpful, I’ve been growing my hair but it has lost a lot of volume. I’ll try this very carefully and see if I finally manage a great haircut 😬
Oh I hope you get on great with it
Your curls are beautiful! So impressed with your cutting skills 🤩 One question, how are you measuring how much to take off the back? I can see how you're doing the front by eye, but when you pull out the strands at the back, how do you know it'll all match up? Thanks!
This is great...but you have nicer looser large curls. I have tighter smaller curls. I think it would take me 3 days to do this! But I'm gona try it.
It would definitely take longer but it does work on tighter curls too 😃
THSM! I knew I needed a haircut, but I was so hesitant going to a hair salon. I was not happy with the last 2 times I went for a haircut. It just seems like they don't know anything about how to cut wavy/curly hair well. At least in my area. So, I attempted cutting my hair. I don't think I got it perfect, but I don't think it's all that bad, for my 1st time. It's so easy. I really can't see paying $40 for a haircut now. Also, I found it easier to trim ends by holding the ends & clipping right above my fingers.
Aw well done!! It will get easier each time you do it as well
Thank you for this!! I’m on first day hair after wash so I’m going to wait until day three or four to give my hair some shape!!
Exciting! I have cut on day 2 or 3 and that often works really well
@@MarisasCurls I did it!!! thank you!! My hair turned out amazing! I tagged you on Instagram 😍
Aw wow that’s amazing!!!
oh my god my name‘s marisa too 😭 this is too cute!!
Incredible! Beautiful hair! Thank you
I would like to make an appointment please LOL btw I think this is the same lipstick I liked in the Dyson video ;0)
Hey! Thanks for the video, I was desperate because I can’t afford a salon cut in my current situation and my hair REALLY needs a cut, and watching this video, I think I can (and will) do it!
I just have a question. My hair will have lost all curl by day three. Can I do it at day one when it’s actually curly? Does it matter? Or did you just cut on day 3 because it was day 3 when you felt like trimming?
Wunderschöne Locken 😍❤️👌...ich habe das auch schon gemacht...mich sieht seit Jahren kein Frisör mehr 😅💪❤️👌👌👌
Thank you so much for this video. You are beautiful and so is your hair!!
Aw thanks so much!
How do you prepare your hair for the haircut? My stylist prefers my hair to have as little product in it as possible, including no gel. Do you do the same?
No I just wash and style as usual. This was day or 4 I think.
Your hair is GORGEOUS, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Aw you are so kind thank you so much 😊
Your curls and hair trim turned out beautiful 👍
Thanks so much
Thank you for your tutorial on cutting curly hair. My hair is much shorter than yours, though I would like to grow it out more. I have been changing up products and techniques and am having success. I’ve been cutting my hair for years after so many really bad hair cuts by Deva experts. What, if nothing, would you recommend adjusting on your technique for shorter hair? Thanks in advance.
I cut it exactly the same way when my hair was shorter 😃 the main thing is just taking it a little shorter with each layer as you go up and keeping an eye on the overall shape as you go
Question: will this style be even if you decide to blow dry it straight? Or is it for curly only styles?
I'm so excited to try this out! Thank you!
I hope it works well for you!
I cut my hair last night, and I'm about to wash it tonight. I can't wait to see what my results will be! ❤❤
My hair turned out great!!! My curls sprung up, and they were much more defined 😍
Yay that’s amazing!
Hi There! Loved your video so much. Do you mind sharing what products you use for styling? Thanks!
Hi! So glad you enjoyed it. I use a wide variety but some of my favourites are curlsmith and Only Curls and Umberto Giannini
Hi! Thanks for the video. I know you said this is day 3 hair. It does have product in it, right? I'm going to try it soon. :)
Yes I washed and styled as normal when it was washday 😃
Hi Marisa, thank you for this tutorial, I definitely want to give this a try. I was wondering if you have any tips for cutting shorter length hair? Mine is currently about shoulder length when dry, and I want to take it to just below the jaw line. So I can't really pull it forward over my shoulder like you do as it won't stay. Do you have any suggestions for how to tackle this? Thanks
I still did the same technique when my hair was shoulder length 😃 just keep checking how it looks with your second mirror
Thank you so much for this video Marisa xx
You are welcome!
Beautiful hair ❤
This isn’t a haircut more like a trim but either way IM LOVINGGG IT!! ❤️🫶
This is so helpful ! Could you explain a little bit more about how to avoid a “shelfy” layer ?
It’s really about only taking each layer a small bit shorter than the one below. If you take it too much shorter that is where you will create a shelf. Does that make sense?
Yes definitely, thank you! Can’t wait to try this, your hair is so beautiful
Yes, this. It seems no matter what I do I end up with shelf layers and I hate it so much. Hopefully this will work. My hair is too long and it's weighing my curls/waves (2c-3a) down. I need to lose some length and do some shaping for sure.
You have such beautiful hair!
Thank you so much 😊
@@MarisasCurls you're welcome! I have gray, just below the chin, curly hair. I'd be afraid to try that. I know what happens when I'm in the garden trimming bushes. Lol
Thank you so much Marisa!! ☺️Just a few minutes into it and have a question... Is there a reason you use day 3/4 hair and not fresh day 1 hair?
To be honest I would usually use day 2 hair because that’s when my hair is most settled. But I just had the time to film this day so I went ahead. I would say ideally cut it whichever day your curls sit best
Hi, love this video and all your others. Can i ask roughly how often do you cut your hair?
Thank you! I don’t really do it on a schedule, just when my ends start to tangle or my shape goes off
Really helpful video! Still not sure I'm brave enough to do mine myself though
So I never have to go to a hairdresser again! Thank you!
Apparently we ll have mor ehair / one side of the body bigger. Makes sense. ☯️ but also, like a tree’s life rings ? When hair grows it cones in on the head in a certain direction/shape so we end up? I think w more hair hanging on one side than the other. My right side is always longer and has more hair than ky left. Annoying but now i just know its sooo natural!
Thank you so much for sharing.
Can us wavies use the same technique to give ourselves a trim?
Pretty new at this still :)
This technique works best, if you have fairly defined, separate curls, preferably ringlets.
With wavy hair...well ask yourself: are you really going to go through with wearing it wavy-curly ever single day? Because this might end up looking choppy, if you wear your hair smooth. Be it intentionally, or because your waves/curls fall flat on day 2 or 3 and you maybe don't have time for a proper refresh/restyle.
If your hair has a halfway decent cut right now, I would commit to actually doing the curly girl method for a while, before you try your hand at cutting your hair.
And it likely won't make much of difference, looks wise as well (in case you're after that and not just saving money). From all I know, a regular wet cut, possibly with layers is perfectly fine for wavy hair.
Hi! You definitely can use this technique if you have some level of clumps in your hair. You may find a regular wet layered cut works just as well for you. But if you want to try cutting your own hair you can definitely try this. Just start small and you can always go back and take more off 😃
My hair is waist length to keep it straighter, but wet it goes full curl like yours. I would love to go curly layers like yours. How hard is it to keep the curls pretty more than wash day?
Love this video!! How often do you trim your hair?
I don’t really have a specific schedule, I just do it when either the ends need it or the shaping needs redone
Your hair is gorgeous and the volume you got from that cut is amazing. Curious why you part your hair in the middle and concern yourself with making the sides even if you wear a side part? Wouldn’t you want to have it look even and balanced in its natural state (parted on the side)? It seems like the hair appears shorter when you sweep it over and that would throw things off?
Because even though I do wear a side part I want the layers to be equal on both sides for when I wear my hair half up or the front pulled back or with a headband. Previously I haven’t done it with a middle part first but this time I found it made a big difference to how balanced it looks and it also gives me a better option to move my parting if I feel like it. I can go for a deep side part or a closer to centre one depending on my mood. But if I cut it only for my side parting I don’t have that flexibility. 😂
I do the same thing, changing where I part my hair. So it does make sense to part the hair in the middle when cutting it.
Can this cut done on non styled hair ?
Hi Marisa
I'm just watching your video again, I was just wondering the way you cut your hair curl by curl, what or how would you cut it if say you wanted your layers shorter than they are in your video ? 💕😊
Do you mean what would you say to a hairdresser? Or how would you do it yourself?
@@MarisasCurls if you decided to cut it yourself without having to go to the hairdresser ? 💕😊
As you do each layer you can just take them a bit shorter, and then once you have trimmed everything you can take a look and trim any shorter than need it. It’s just a case of keeping looking and checking as you go. It’s completely up to you how short you take the layers 😃
Wow you did a fantastic job! This was incredibly helpful, thank you! Can I ask what concealer you use? 🙂
Aw thanks so much! I have a few that I like but I think this day was probably Revolution conceal and define concealer
How are your curls this beautiful on day 3/4?
I will try this lol but maybe on day 2 lol
