er... they wouldn't have known it was there to spawn, unless they either knew the biology of it, or they cut it open to see it was full of roe. releasing it after they cut it open to discover it was full of roe wouldn't have been terribly useful.

actually, the fishery for it peaked in the late 90s and is now on the decline, though true it is not yet endangered.
