There was a big guy who called me a p*ssy. I shrugged. "You are what you eat. Y'know?" That caught him off guard, but he didn't smile. "Eat it a lot, do ya?", he asked me. Agree, and I've never been to jail/prison, and hope I never do, but in this crazy ass world we live in, you never know what might happen, as you very well could end up being thrown in for being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or just for some off color remark you said to someone on a bad day, and that gets you in a fight. So that's why over the years I've watched several channels on guys who did time in jail/prison, but turned their lives around after surviving, so I have a base idea of what to do, and what not to do.

There were two cages, usually to keep genders separate, but that day it was all men, and one side was just for Steve. He needed to be kept separate because they didn't have leg irons that would fit him. He was that big. When he saw me coming down the stairs he was like, "Hey, kid! You scared? You look scared." And I was. So with a shaky stutter I replied, "You m-m-must be that b-b-big guy I gotta knock out to get some respect around here." Everyone was dead silent for a moment, and then Steve did a massive, terrifying belly laugh. Then he said, "You're all right, kid," and we were best friends.

I try to explain that to people as well, the SA aspect of prison. It really doesn't exist on the scale it's made to look on tv. If it does happen, it's because you're engaging in gang activity, and then it's usually your gang that would do it. There are so many "punks" in the joint, dudes that want that can get it without using force. As a first timer I'd be more worried about unspecified taxation. Taking something from someone without them expressing exactly what they get back in return. A cigarette given, could be a pack in return. But SA isn't really on the radar anymore. I know there are guys on RUclips who talk prison up, make it seem so violent, so hard-core..... but that's their ego, not a reality. Those are the dudes who want you to think their some of the baddest dudes out there simply because they went to the joint....they're lying. Here's what I know; the guys who talk about booty bandits, usually are the booty bandits. I did my time from 99 to 2006, everything I've said, is from learned experience. Lake Butler, West Unit, Florida State Penn., PCI.

I fundamentally hate the prison system. Zero tolerance towards rape and other things. How to achieve that? More surveillance, staff and actual humiliting corporal punishment for aggressors.

Thing with prison is that you have to remember everything is about respect. Everything. When a dude comes up on you, it’s about getting respect. How you handle yourself is going to determine if you are respected. Win or lose, you fight back and don’t snitch to the police, guys will respect that. Stay out of people’s business, etc.

Prison politics in California and most states west of the Rockies are different than the rest of the country. I was 19 with long blond hair when I went down. This is 1992 and I don't know anything about prison but the horrible rumors everyone hears. In California the whites and the Surenos, or Mexican gangs from Southern California, work together. They have a strict no homo policy. The second day I was in prison a guy who grew up in my town and was a member of the Nazi Lowriders( a white prison gang similar to the Aryan Brotherhood) came and had a talk with me. He told me right away that no one was going to try and fuck me and that if anyone did come and tell him and they would get dealt with. I never did cut my hair. They would whistle at me and call me Marcia Brady but no one ever laid a hand on me.

Interesting, most of us who got out and now live a normal career/family/mortgage life don’t like to talk this openly in public. I only did 6 months in the Navy/Marine brig for mayhem in 1999 and I’m pretty quiet about it. I was there for drunken mischief but there were some real bad criminals waiting to go on to long sentences in federal prison and there was a bit of rough housing
