Lego Technic Compact Steering, Drive and Suspension Unit (with Instructions)

  • Hi! Welcome to my latest video, a compact, (if not the most compact out there) steering, suspension and drive unit made entirely fro m lego technic! In fact, it is that small that there is only 1 stud between both suspension arms. This allows (with the wheels shown in the video), a total width of 18 studs, which as most of you probably know, is not very big! Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the video.

      @@Lemzipnorth Observe the suspension arms at 1.27 . As he is steering the wheels, the suspension arms are bending. Over a time of use, I don't know if it can result in any serious damage but some damage is sure to be seen like weakening of parts.

      It seems so. I built this model, and found steering bent the parts. I like this model which only uses very traditional parts but it's certainly challenging to have driving, steering and suspension altogether.

    Using that ball joint tie rod system, you can get more steering angle by shortening the rods coming out of the steering knuckle. The way you have it makes it easier to turn and maintain an angle, though.

    One thing that confuses me and disappoints me is why don’t Lego use the wishbone from 8165 and 8880 for the steering, it just seems a awful lot better than the 5 hole beams etc, after building the Chiron and Sian each corner of the car seems far to complex to the point that it’s ugly and far from clean aesthetic, 8880 simple clean upper and lower wishbone track rod/steering arm and hub, clear clean and simple

      All About Lego the problem with the steering is that the center point of the wheel is not aligned with the u-joint's middle. Otherwise o don't think it would not be that bad, also you can increase the length of the beam (the secondary steering option for the people who didn't have the special bar with ball joints) by one and it would have been better, and still compact

      12171010011010 technically it does have a differential, because both of the wheels can be independently connected to a motor, which allows them to turn at different speeds. 😀👍👍

      well if you have two different motors sure, but with such a small design they would take a lot more space than just one. With your design if you have two motors for drive you still need another for steering, unless you work out a way for both motors to control steering together, which would be hard.

      12171010011010 it is not impossible, the Mg Metro 6R4 rally car you see in the video uses this suspension setup, with two L-Motors, a Servo motor, and two AAA battery boxes, and it still has room for an interior, and is relatively small... 😉👍👍

    nice work, my mini trial truck has smaller driven and suspended front steering mechanism. your design is nice also ☺

    Not much steering lock on it

    could it be that there is a slight flaw in the steering mechanism?
    The cross joint is offset by 1 stud to the pivot point. this means that the joint is not just folding when steered, but moving. this movement can only be allowed if there is one more joint an each side AND accepting the fact the axle between these two, would move axially (i.e. the joints would slide apart and together slightly).

    • @allaboutlego1540
      @allaboutlego1540  4 года назад

      Yes, you are correct - it has been a few years since I made this and I honestly can’t remember why I ignored the fact that the Universal joints were offset from the pivot point. However, looking back at this design now I think it would be possible to swap out the universal joints for some other Lego CV joints which would move the two pivot points together, hence removing the flaw in the system that you mentioned? Thanks for your comment!
