Why does this country need schools just for Blacks. Must be a holdover from days gone by. Sell the campus and invite all Tennessee students to attend the many public funded universities and colleges (where race is not an issue) in the state.
Because it used to be illegal for Blacks to go to school with whites. So Blacks had to build our own institutions. Just like white families like to hold on to legacy and have multiple generations attend the same school, Blacks have those same legacy ideals and take pride into having multiple generations attend their HBCUs. Why should Black people be forced to lose their legacy because people don’t understand the history of these institutions? White people forced HBCUs into existence.
The term HBCU (Historically Black College & University) comes from the Higher Education Act of 1965, which Congress officially defined an “HBCU” as a school of higher learning that was accredited and established before 1964, and whose principal mission was the education of African Americans. After segregation became ILLEGAL, the institution was no longer just for “blacks” , it became open to all races. As it is currently illegal to discriminate admission to based off race.
