Zookeeper here! The Virginia opossum lives in North America. Possums can be found in Australia. When pronouncing opossum, you do say the o but for some reason Americans have shortened it to possum. The technical term though is Opossum.
During Pangea times, they were one species but then Pangea broke apart leaving one group on Australia and the other on South America. When the Europeans came to America, the butchered the Native American name for the animal and called them opossums. Then when Europeans made their way to Australia and saw the different animal they said “hey these guys look pretty similar. Let’s call them possums”.
