The thing about being a multi-ethnic state during an inter-ethnic conflict is that you often have citizens of both ethnicities who don’t want their relatives to die. On that basis, a course apart from peace is often difficult to support. In that sense, many Western nations have benefited from the fact of their own population’s broad racism and ignorance of foreign policy, in addition to their nuclear-terror-driven tendencies towards unreflective compliance. To the detriment of political consensus in these countries, this ignorance- and consequent racism- can no longer be consistently relied upon to produce effortless consensus in such matters. Damn shame. If only everyone would consent to submit or die when asked, the world would be a more peaceful place.
