Romania is no longer the famished, impoverished country of yesteryear.
The athletes have more choices , especially education, and don't have to accept the grueling training which has always been Romanian gymnastics.

The hard acrobatics, the connections, the leaps, the rhythm, the sharp unique choreography, they worked so confidently it was so rare to see a romanian to fall from beam.

Awesome video 😉. Nice to see the older clips-I was training for a full twisting back flip on the beam, during the 3yrs I trained with Karolyi in the mid 80's. Never got a chance to do it in any big meets though, before I was injured and had to quit (falling from ~13/14ft in the air onto the back of my neck-I was just grateful that it wasn't worse, many gymnasts have been paralyzed from the same injury, some even died 😬).
Took a LONG time before I could even LOOK at gymnastics again. My lifelong dream and my heart crushed-it was just too painful to watch. Now, at 50yo, I can watch videos and be PROUD of the gymnasts I see (!) and with the older "my age" and before videos that we only saw if we were lucky to catch it on TV and record it on on a VCR tape 🤣, this channel is golden 😊.

@@ct4533 they have repeatedly denied this. They did have strict diets, but of course they had proteins, etc. They wouldn't be starved, they just couldn't eat the pizza and candies that kids like. Physical and psychological abuses happened, in the case of the youngest kids. Not saying that is fine, of course it is not, but it is just other ways to discipline kids, just as our grandparents who got the belts when they were kids. It is unthinkable today but considered normal back then. I don't think they abused the senior gymnasts, they were smart enough to know what to do if they wanted to be champions (training hard, following the diet, etc.) Yes, they were under a very strict system but there is a point in which you know what it takes to be there. Romania has good juniors but as soon as they reach 15/16 y/o there is regress instead of progress. Maybe except for the clubs in Bucharest, the clubs in the rest of the country don’t have good conditions and the teenagers, plus their parents, don’t seem to be willing to accept those conditions in order to continue training. It’s also quite hard to balance sport and school, as the system is bad in the country. Another aspect is the social life that many teenagers do not want to sacrifice in order to be isolated in the training camp. Overall there is no winner spirit in the Romanian sport at the moment, the mentality is weak as alomst no one has a positive mindset, and the success comes only from exceptions.
