Wonderful to see this. Thanks a million Wink and David! I was surprised even though it was taped in a real market, how very much it still looked and felt like the actual series itself (especially the sweep itself). It even had the same theme song and sound effects!
This is an amazing find Mr. Martindale! Wish it was in better quality but beggars can't be choosy after all. Still great to see how it all began though.
Actually, they're bringing it back. Fremantle has just purchased the rights to the format from Al Howard, and they're planning to air a revival for ABC's prime time schedule with Leslie Jones hosting and executive producing.
Great pilot! But the show was better once they got picked and moved production to a sound stage at Hollywood Center Studios, with a full mock supermarket built. David's just as great here as he was on the show.

Well, at least all 9 years... they stopped shooting in 1994 and put it in reruns, but then brought it back in 1999. I guess Buzzr has some of the episodes at least.
My friend and I were on the show back in the 80s and I would Love to see that episode again! Nancy, I would like to see the whole series in order as well!
Wow, seeing the pilot of the show is great enough, but what really sells it for me is that it features footage from the original ABC version, which sadly, is really hard to find, due to most of it being wiped by ABC.
The one 60s episode I found is so poor it's unwatchable and it's hard to tell what's going on. I guess it must've been a kinescope that survived because ABC wiped them all otherwise.
If someone brought this game back, I'd love to see 2 things: 1. Prize increases to 10k. 2. Every team during the Sweep is partnered with their hometown food bank, and every dollar they win in the sweep is matched with a donation to a local food bank. (I think the most anyone picked up in a sweep once was $1800, that's not impossible.)
@@NEPatriot Furthermore, a full fledged revival for ABC's prime time schedule with Leslie Jones as host and executive producer is due to air sometime in the future.
BTW, the version of the theme used here was used on the show after bonus round wins or losses IIRC. A regular version of the theme was composed when it went to series, and stuck until 1993, when the logo was redesigned and theme was remixed.
This pilot was very much like the series after it got picked up. One of this version's unusual features was that you could lose time if you had an incorrect answer.
Andrew Hain And in the actual Big Sweep, instead of multiple Bonuses (w/pennants with the amounts shown) scattered throughout the market and teams each allowed more than one, there were only 3 Bonuses (raised to 4 in '93) (w/the amounts hidden and not revealed until after the Sweep), and only one was allowed to a customer.
Looking at the registers, I see that the subtotals before they added the meat prices was in whole dollars. Also, I noticed that the middle meat price ($20.38, $23.89, $27.17) wasn't equidistant from the lower and high prices, so I'm guessing that they priced it by the pound there. And obviously, you could tell Team #1 wasn't going to win because they had a subtotal of $570 before they added in the final item, since Team #2's subtotal was $660 (Team #3's subtotal, just for the record, was $470). P.S., I vaguely recall seeing footage of the pilot in some promos when I used to watch the show on Lifetime all those years ago.
4:10 It's interesting to see a format from "The Price Is Right" on the pilot episode of "Supermarket Sweep" history. Back then, I think Bob Barker would've sued David Ruprecht of copyright infringement.

Did you know that Kevin and Julie (one of the teams in this episode) would later appear on the actual Supermarket Sweep in '90? (they appeared early in its run and won their Big Sweep, but didn't win the $5K; they later returned for a Sweep of Champions and won the Big Sweep again, but still didn't win the $5K)
I heard the news that Supermarket Sweep is coming back. Now, just in case they didn't win $5,000.00, it carries over to tomorrows show (worth $5K, $10K, $15K, etc.).

Given how casual the actual show was, it's weird to see David in a suit. Great to see the pilot of one of my faves. :)
