I'm a long time Gopro user, owned 12 different of their action camera for my business, Gopro had an edge over the competition for a long time, they had the single best action camera on the market, this year is where they lost the game to DJI with their amazing Action 5, Insta 360 to release the Ace Pro 2 in the next few weeks, they are now 3 in the game and fans are tired of having to re-buy all the same accessories every two years and they swap batteries for nothing. Trying to milk customer to their last buck instead of creating the best camera like their competitor is what brought them to their demise in the end

Personally, I think overpricing the newer camera's while at the same time lowering the quality also played a huge part in GoPro going downhill. Whereas the cameras up to and including the GoPro 9 still gave good value for the money and were of high quality, from its successor on the quality seems to have dropped in favour of adding more gimmicks that nobody asked for and the price to quality ratio went the wrong way. As happens so many times, greed seems to have won and the results are obvious.

Who else is kicking themselfs over the gopro, im sure like many surfers, all we had in the early 90s was disposable waterproof 35mm cameras to capture our surfing action. I was 15years old in high school and through my technical design elective class I would pull apart the disposable cameras housings and with my teacher started designing a reusable housing for a top brand instamatic camera of the 90s. As I finally got the design down and submitted it for my high school certificate, go pro 1 was released! I was devastated! Everyone at school who was interested in the camera housing I made instantly laughed at me that someone had done the same and made a business out of it and not just a highschool project. I had plans to make it a business as photography was my passion allready with SLRs and water housings for professional cameras. Ever since then I look at gopro and think, if only a year earlier and I didn't was 3years at school designing it, my dream would have been realised

I started off with a number of cheap “gopro clones” and eventually decided none of them were worth it and went through a period when I bought nothing but real GoPros. I would record with a Hero 5 Session on my head, and a Hero 5 Black or Hero 7 Black on the bow of my kayak. Then I got into 360 degree cameras like the Garmin VIRB360 and Insta360 X3. I was always disappointed with the fact that every action camera maker, especially GoPro, thought that all their customers wanted to shoot short videos with time to cool down and change batteries between shots, when I was trying to record 2+ hour kayak races. Most cameras had somewhere around 80-90 minutes battery life, if they didn’t overheat first. I ruined a couple of cameras trying to provide external power because doing so usually meant leaving off a door and water would get in. Or they’d just overheat and shut down. The VIRB360 had an easy and waterproof way to provide external power, and it never overheated, but the picture quality left a lot to be desired. I’m really excited about the new DJI Osmo Action that’s advertising a 4 hour battery life.

In fact, overheating problems start much further back in time. I had a Hero 7 and it was a terrible camera. Yes it had very good stabilization, but the camera connectivity, almost never worked properly, often overheated and drained the battery while turned off. I think the problem with the drone is of a similar nature, because if it was the battery, it wouldn't record its fall. It's just that GoPro skimps on hardware and expects this gadget to handle fairly demanding software. I have both Insta360 and DJI cameras, I would definitely not buy a GoPro again.

It was a much bigger fiasco than I imagined. The Karma Grip for me was the best GoPro made. It worked. I bought the GoPro 7 HERO Black when it came out on the market because there was no camera with such good digital stabilization at the time. After some time, after the GoPro HERO 7 Black constantly crashed during operation and overheated, it simply stopped working. In desperation I bought another one. What a mistake I made! over the last two weeks we were discussing this topic a lot within our team. GoPro, DJI or Insta360? in the end it‘s a question of what you‘ll use the camera for. the GoPro‘s sensor is too small, but it‘s the best package, since it‘s quite good in everything. Not trusting it‘s LOG profile, but HDR is pretty nice. Low light capability of the DJI is unmatched and the image quality of the Insta360 is impeccable. they all have their pros and cons and it‘s really up to which ecosystem you prefer and which features you need most. I would go for the DJI (piloting DJI drones for years and love their image processing and LOG profiles), my colleague is a hardcore GoPro user for years now. So in the end it‘s a decision between three very good products.

@@SunteamFilms for you it might be .. however for a mass consumer market it’s probably more important not having an ecosystem.
Using some sort of action cam as a casual thing most consumers just want to be able to record and edit, not require an app with tos etc
Your typical average surfer or mountain biker just wants something to watch and perhaps share with close family and friends.. probably merged with some phone footage at times.
This is what killed GoPro for me and I just ended up with a generic Chinese camera .. lower quality in every way but the best part was it was generic, no special apps .. i could use video editing software I was already familiar with, without some complex process

In 2015, the first major competitor for GoPro hit the markets, called the Replay (720p/240 max) and the ReplayXD (1080p/60 max) - it was housed in a 20mm/25mm aluminium tube, was waterproof to 10m as-is, and to 15m with the installation of a small rubber band to cover the microphone hole. It had a waterproof case that made it watertight to 100m. With a smaller front-face than the GoPro, it was very popular with surfers and skiers - water and snow - due to the reduced wind resistance. This was right around the time GP was starting to falter, and this camera, being incredibly popular with extreme sportsters, helped kick the anthill out from under GP.

    Cool videos and pictures.
It started getting worse after around a year with the app.
You now have to have an Internet connection to LOCALLY transfer files.
    That is just stupid.
The camera pairing would also sometimes just not work at all.
Then the PC Software became more and more crash prone for me.
    Quite frustrating.
In the end I switch to an older version of the app (possible with old Android apk files) and used another PC software.

I have Hero 4 black, Hero 5 black and Hero 7 Black for professional shoots, Hero 4 and Hero 5 are trustworthy. I've shot continuous time-lapse for 10 days multiple times; Hero 5 and Hero 4 did the job; Hero 7 failed on the 2nd day due to overheating. Funny thing is 4 & 5 are purchased as used products; Hero 5 has replaced display; the previous owner sold it due to a broken flex cable; I replaced the display. I've been following GoPro for the last 5 years and looking at Hero 13, I don't see any innovation; only lens thing is new. As a professional cinematographer, I was expecting bigger sensor or equal to DJI Osmo 4, But I'm disappointed... Now looking forward to Osmo 5.

GoPro was truly at the pinnacle with the GoPro 4, with every gadget and tech store filled with GoPro accessories and RUclips brimming with GoPro-generated content. However, instead of leading the market in active video usage like DJI, they fell behind and began to follow the market trends.
The last Gopro i bought was gopro session 2 due of how practical it was to carry around.
The action camera I purchased after session was the Osmo Action, primarily because it features a front screen and interchangeable lens protection-two key aspects that the GoPro lacks.

I was a long-time customer since the release of the Hero 2. I also had the Hero 3, 4, 8, 10, and 12, but I returned the Hero 12 because I had very bad customer service. It had been a nightmare. I also hated that the camera would often shut itself off, even when it had 30% battery, or that it would overheat. I lost so many chances for once-in-a-lifetime clips. I just didn't trust it anymore.
I switched to DJI with the Action 4 and also ordered another Action 4. DJI has the best customer service that I have ever seen. They have a "Care Refresh" service where it costs just €19 to replace a damaged camera, but I have never broken one. The editing app is also free. Batterys last very long, no overheat issues, magnetic quick connection and other good stuff

I've been using gopro since 2009. Got my first one from a buddy. I still have it to this day. I just picked up a hero 11 black on sale. I only stick with it because I know it'll work. I'm a Combat Engineer and use my gopros for demo ranges. I clamp my old hero plus just a couple feet from explosives and it doesn't skip a beat. I had to go on a scavenger hunt for one of them a while back because the clamp i was using broke off when the charge went off and sent it flying. I love em. The old ones die too fast because of their age. This is why I got the 11, to keep a plethora of charged batteries on hand. Maybe there are better cameras out there. I just don't wanna put the money in something I don't have experience with. Great video though. I knew nothing about the CEO

The insta360 is amazing and only getting better.
I tried the gopro fusion 360 years ago, and it was a mess. Often taking half a day to copy the files to a PC ready for editing. The insta360 took a few minutes, plus the desktop app is staggeringly easy to use. The gopro then required you to use Adobe software to manage the video. The insta360 did it all in app on a PC or phone, for free.

Most manufacturers do no product testing before sending it to manufacturing for a run of 100K units, letting customers do the quality control for them. It explains the crushable waterproof camera and the drone with battery bombs. My entire RUclips channel is shot on cheap Chinese action cameras and old 1080HD camcorders because they are cheap but they get the same quality control. Many knockoff products come off the same assembly line as the name brand. They just keep running the line after the name brand customer has finished paying for the setup costs.

I use cameras and action cameras entirely while scuba diving. I had a GoPro10 Black in a dive housing. It didn't take long before it started giving me problems. The problems would be: 1. When turning it on, it would show a green screen and then start to turn off and on by itself. I would have to time pressing the power button for an extended amount of time to make it turn off, then try to turn it on again and hope for the best. 2. I would get a "Repairing File" message as I started a video recording. Time to power off and on again and hope that 1. didn't occur. 3. It would drain batteries quite fast and the above described problems would occur more often when battery was below 60-70%.
I started watching videos about the DJI OSMO ACTION 4, sold the GoPro to a friend and bought the DJI which I have been very happy with since.

I have felt like since the 8/9 the innovation has dropped off a cliff, there are such minor improvements that seem to be matched by minor drawbacks with each new generation. I plan on getting a used 12 now that the 13 is out just to save some money and get the picture quality upgrade, but it’s not something I’m really excited for anymore.

  • @Visiopod

I just checked the specs of the DJI Osmo 5 and compared it with the GoPro Hero 13.
    Pros for DJI Osmo 5:
    + better battery life
+ sustains double the water pressure to GoPro (GoPro 13 supports 10 meters without a case, while Osmo 5 supports 20)
    + built in pressure gauge
+ built in storage (47 GB)
+ battery runs at colder temperatures
    + larger image sensor (40 MP 1/1.3" vs. GoPro Hero 13s 27MP 1/1.9")
    Cons for DJI:
    - No 5.3K video at any FPS (GoPro Hero 13 supports 5.3K at 60 fps).
    - No subscription model that offers cheaper hardware (A single curved adhesive base kits costs the same as 6 adhesive bases for GoPro with a subscription).
    - Only 240 fps at 1080p slowmotion, compared to GoPros 400 fps at 720p, 360 fps at 900p at 15 seconds as well as GoPros 120 fps at 5.3K for 5 seconds.
    - less lens mods than GoPro (Osmo 5 have NDR filters, but no diving filters and no macro, telephoto, wide angle, smart motion blur or anamorphic lens).
    - No dedicated HDR modes
    - Shooting while charging disables two of the Osmo 5s functions if the battery isn't installed (compared to GoPros magnetic door latch system, which only works slightly worse without a battery).
    - Burst slow motion uses interpolation rather than real frames (interpolation is the synthesizing of additional frames, aka errors can occur that makes it look weird).
    - Fewer accessories than GoPro.
At the end of the day it comes down to preferences. I personally prefer GoPro because of its higher camera resolution, better HDR options, better slow motion modes and better accessories, all at a cheaper price than DJI, simply because I believe the core reason to buy a video camera should be based on the capabilities of shooting quality video and not the capabilities of the battery or image stills. I use my GoPro primarily for skiing and shooting DIY videos. I can use my phone for higher pixel still shots (Samsing Ultra S21 boasts a 120 MP main lens, triple the size of DJI) and I don't mind changing batteries while Skiing. When recording DIY videos I can keep my GoPro constantly powered by using the magnetic door system and livestream the video to a PC which then screen records it. The Insta360 looks like a good competitor, albeit mostly for night time shots, as it too lacks the amount of accessories, lenses, mods, filters and exclusive prices of GoPros subscription model. I'll likely get an Insta for nighttime shots. But for everything during the day? GoPro all the way!

Great video mate, you're on the up for sure! GoPro were truely innovative early on but as with any innovator competetors come chasing eating away at that initial success. Something that has always bothered me about GoPro is the arogance as a brand, comparatively DJI do zero flashy marketing but their products and price do the talking, Insta360 are pretty shadey with their marketing unfortunately. I think another big factor is that camera tech has slowed down in recent years, the annual upgrade cycle is dead, you can create amazing content that stands up using gear that's a few years old still.

I can record 360 and than cut the video like I want, or decide in the beginning which lense and aspect ratio I want and get even more battery life out of it. Yeah it lacks a bit in dark conditions, but with a bit of twicking you can get a good picture.

I had a GoPro10 and I can say that it was pretty good action camera but after few months that I bought it,battery problems started and sometimes problems with unjustified recordings stops.I keep this camera for almost 2years until I lost it.After few months and some research I decided to buy the new GoPro 12.It was summer season so I used my camera for windsurfing, sailing, snorkel etc.
Very soon I noticed problems with water inside the camera especially between battery (room) and door,I look about it and learned that was factory issue.(first big disappointment)
After few weeks that I was still thinking how sad was the brand new camera had that problem, said to me self try to see what is going on inside the lens.
So I twisted and open the protective cover of the lens and I saw Rust and humidity.
That was my biggest and last disappointment for GoPro brand.
Just to clarify I bought the camera after 1-2month of the release day from the official site with Subscription (😂) and I never open the protective cover of the lens(until the day that I said above).
I think now is my time to try some other brands, like it or not .!

The results I get from it are great, even now in 2024. It's robust, water proof and with descent battery life. However - it I leave the memory card in when the camera is off - it heaths up and drains the battery. It's not the card, I've tried others. And I hear similar problems with newer models. The camera isn't exactly cheap so such problems are not acceptable. I probably won't be buying another gopro. Maybe that's also a reason for their financial downfall.
