Helical Antenna 5.8GHz for FPV……the kitchen sieve version!

  • I came across this folding sieve recently and as soon as I saw it I knew I had to turn it into an antenna!
In the video I build a 14 turn helical antenna for 5.8GHz FPV but this could also be used as a reflector for many designs.
The helical calculator I used can be found here: jcoppens.com/an...
Here is a typical listing for the sieve on eBay: goo.gl/eeaJdf

Excellent repurposed use of the flying saucer strainer! Your parabolic 5.8 is showing great Fpv bid for me on a high sensitivity vrx I have competing with a dual fr632. I used copper tape back folded and pressure sandwiched with neoprene to give a solid ground to alloy reflector. Thnx for the bids you must try a micro Fpv quad one day.

I seem to remember there was something like that back in the 70s,It was a salad shaker you would put the salad inside run it under the tap to wash it, then close it and shake of the excess water. Love the video`s Andrew keep them coming.

Well said Andrew! Call them out on their scheme mate... They totally ignored the philosophy and ethics to help improve mankind. A good video thanks... As i saw that vegetable steamer holder, I took up the one in my kitchen and smiled. Great work!

FYI: the device is a steamer adaptor to put in a pot and with a little water beneath it's base which has three 2 inch legs, cooks the vegetables without them boiling around in the water, a good useful kitchen tool imho ...

To get your 11.8 wire-spacing more accurate, multiply 11.8 x 14 (turns) = 165.2 and drill two holes that far apart in the tube. wind on 14 turns threading the ends through the holes. It would then be possible to even-out your turns by eye and steel rule. A rubber bung from the local chemist/brew-shop can be jammed in the end then screwed to the reflector, with a splosh of epoxy to lock it.

Neat design. I just picked up one of these sieves for $1 at the Goodwill Store. Been wanting to try this out and see how performs compared to a PCB board solid copper ground plane.

I doubt very much that this would work like you think. For one thing, using a right hand circularly polarized helical antenna, when a transmitted signal is reflected, it becomes left hand circularly polarized negating the reception. Now if you put a LHCP instead of RHCP then it may help.

instead of just a pvc tube, make the center helix conical. you wont be able to close the strainer but it opens up a little more spectrum.

Many a career has been built upon a generally-accepted body of knowledge To admit to the validity of new information which contradicts that body of knowledge is to admit that the basis of one's career is faulty. It always amuses me when I hear someone state something as "objective, measurable" fact, when what they should say is "Based upon what we know thus far...."
The sieve looks to be made of stainless steel. Good workaround.

with "common-sense" in order to put things together that are practical that work. Keep up the good work with ideas and

The dish certainly makes the antenna look very "sci-fi", but does it do anything for the performance of the antenna as a whole? Have the antenna characteristics been measured and compared with one tat has a flat plate reflector?
My understanding is that any reflected signal will be circularly polarised, but in the other direction. However, that may be desirable in this case, as the reflections are are traveling long the spiral in the opposite direction. How do you test your antennae - by trial and error, or do you use instruments to measure impedance, SWR, etc?

Don't you need to sheild the top of the helical antenna to keep the polarisation in line
I don't have a lot of knowledge when it comes to fpv antennas but it just seems logical to me

That is a good use for the colander, but does it work with a helical? My understanding is that a dish reflector effectively inverts the circular or linear polarity of the incoming signal to the element, therefore, the direct feed will be in the opposite polarity to what is reflected from the sieve surface, thus cancelling out any directional gain. It would work with a dipole or linear antenna, but again better with a screening reflector to block direct feed to the element, or possibly in the case of a helical by placing another reflector disk at the outer end to block direct feed and only accept reflected signals in whatever polarity is needed (wound opposite). Cheers, and thanks again for another great video.

Fantastic thinking outside the square Andrew, i imagine Mum`s all over will be scratching their heads wondering why the kitchen utensils are disappearing... lol love your work Sir!! And come to think about it this Helical looks remarkably like the Satellite antenna`s in orbit, they fold and unfold in a similar way, hmm maybe that`s where NASA got it`s idea from.

Great vid, and useful here, for I have one of these antiques, I have made a bi-quad antenna for it. My question is, I see vids where ground coaxial is also attached to the active element as well as center conducter??? This seems wrong, so should I ground to the parabolic colander??

RE: WiFI antennas. I'm missing something. How does connecting an antenna to the USB port get to the WiFi Amp? Furthermore, Antennas connected using ethernet or USB cable would have much loss compared to RG-8 foam or coax. I've built my own HF Ant Measurement receivers and have done many HF ant gain measurements yrs ago. WU2J Byron
