Jan, no matter what Canon does you know there will still be people who will not be happy. IMO the Canon R5 Mark II and the R1 are cameras that offer great features, once production cameras are available, and photographers who are knowledgeable use these new cameras then the cameras will speak for themselves. 👍👍😎
Sounds good but then the argument will continue that this new camera is the R1. Canon will need to come out and say there aren’t anymore flagship cameras, rather they are in the business of selling niche cameras.
Have a great trip, Jan. I look forward to seeing lots of superb images! The original R5 is such a great camera, it really didn't need dramatic upgrades that some people seemed to expect. Canon was smart with R5 Mark II. Don't mess with success! There are still a few minor things that they might be able to iron out in R5II software updates (such as allowing users to adjust how many shots are taken in the pre-shoot mode). The most significant R5II shortcoming I see is the continued use of an SD card slot. That's a potential bottleneck that could have been avoided by putting dual CFExpress card slots in the R5II (like in the R1). To me the R1 is more like an R3 Mark II. In fact, R3 sales will likely be seriously undermined by the R1. Perhaps Canon plans to discontinue the R3. It's hard to imagine the R3 and R1 selling alongside each other. Yes, the R3's list price is $1300 US less than the R1's. But $6299 isn't all that big a stretch to someone already planning to spend $4999. In light of all that, maybe Canon plans to revert to their old naming conventions and eventually add a high megapixel R1"s" (similar to how they offered 1D and 1Ds series DSLRs alongside each other in the past). Lots for the Canon rumor sites to discuss! 😂 Personally, I won't be buying either an R1 or an R5II. I'm waiting for an R7 Mark II (now that the APS-C lens situation is improving). I seriously hope Canon goes back to more traditional controls on the R7II, while also reducing rolling shutter, improving AF, and making the camera compatible with a battery grip. Once the upgrading gwts into full swing and the market gets flooded with original R5, causing prives to drop, I might buy one of those too. That would serve my less frequent full frame needs very well.
You hit the nail on the head for what I want in a wildlife camera. I came from a Sony A7R4 to a Canon R5 and for the most part, I am happier with the R5 but boy do I miss those 61MPS.
What Jan said @12:05 ! Truer words have never been spoken ! ALL the cameras Jan talked about in this vid are better than my R7's in a lot of ways. But reach is SO important to me, I don't have much choice at the moment. It kills me that Canon apparently thinks that folks using crop bodies are not really serious about their photography, or willing to spend more $$$ on their gear. I'd pay $3K in a heartbeat, for a more pro level APS-C with more of the features of these higher end FF bodies... Great video Jan, and as always, your photography is as good as it gets :)
Hi Jan. I hope to receive my R5 MK II soon, and I totally agree with you. I was so happy to hear, that we will have 14 bits all over - also with the electronic shutter! You are the first to compliment on this! Jan, DK
I very agree U share one important point - 12bit vs 14bit when use electric shutter, very less people know this, because use over ISO 1600, it will easy to see the different quality
Great video as usual! I agree that most reviewers haven't picked up on the significance of 14 bit files in electronic shutter. For my landscape photography, this (hopefully) means that focus bracketing will produce 14 bit raw files, significantly increasing dynamic range at low ISO.
So I purchased a Canon R6 Mark II to replace my R7. It is hands down my favorite camera I have ever used for shooting wildlife, except the 24mp sensor. Flexibility of autofocus system and how well it tracks and nails focus is nothing short of amazing. This new R5 II is basically a R6 II with electronic mode dial, screen on top and 45 BSI sensor with more than twice as fast read out speed as R6II or R5. Then add one of the most sophisticated autofocus systems available with 30 fps Raw. So what is not to love on this camera? Finally pre-burst implemented properly, thank you Canon. That new action sport mode is very interesting, why couldn't you add birds and wildlife also? Load images just like you can people if you want to target certain species. 14 bit Raw on all photo's is also very welcome. Bigger brighter EVF, improved in-body IS and also some pretty great Video specs as well. My dream camera so I pre ordered mine about one minute after it was available for purchase.
Agree totally… r52 in r3 body ..big battery just one reason ..the feel of r3 in the hand is mega …I’ve ordered a r52with grip tho 😎… but I don’t think it will fit as well my r3… love the button layout also
We were thinking Palm Cockatoos would be difficult to find, being so shy and all. Then a flock of around a dozen birds landed next to our camper in the Seisia caravan park and hung around for about an hour. They like the native almonds and the park has a couple of these trees. Super impressive bird up close. Just stunning.
Enjoy your trip Jan... and the new drone! I've had a Mavic 3 pro for over a year and it's been great. Make sure that you've got the latest firmware that allows you to turn off all sensors when landing.. Makes hand catching so much easier! Good decision to get the pro controller. I didn't initially, but upgraded to it about six months ago. Well worth the money for lots of reasons.
I've sold my R6 MK II, but I'm keeping my R5 as my second string, and waiting for an R5 MK II. I completely agree with you re high megapixels and cropping, so I think you're bang on with your idea of an R3 lookalike with a high megapixel sensor... It'd get over the battery nonsense as well.. That 8v 6N battery is long past it's sell by date now! Many thanks, and enjoy your trip!
Enjoy your trip! I will be patient and wait for your review of the R5 ii before I order. The AF needs to have a huge improvement before I bite the bullet!
Jan, have a great safe trip! Looking forward to hearing and viewing your trip videos! Also, I did preorder the R5ii, and will keep my excellent R5 as a backup!
Have a great trip, and fingers crossed that you find your target species. For me, a high MP camera in a pro body would be ideal, not only because of the weather sealing, but also because of the ability to use both AF motors in the RF600f4. I pre-ordered the R5 II and it has almost all features I wanted except for bigger battery and burst mode that compares to Sony's 120fps.
I have never had the good fortune to be able to come to Australia (yet🙏) so I don’t know which cockatoos it will be but looking forward to seeing your video and I really hope your 4th attempt is successful, so sorry your health still seems to bother you on occasion. I am looking forward to my R5ii and I have not changed my mind about that! 😊
Hi Jan. Like you I spend more time determining what camera equipment to pack then clothing. Clothing is weather dependent and easier to decide on for me. Trying to predict what photo opportunities I may have in a location drives what equipment I take. Always a concern is size and weight depending on mode of travel. Have fun on your adventure. I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
I wasn't in the market for the R1, but the R5 II I did pre-order. However, my question always goes back to, "how on earth did pro wild life shooters ever make a living shooting those 5 to 12 or so megapixel cameras prior to the megapixel explosion?" I'm not saying it's not important, but nowadays and with all this technology, most RUclips photographers seem to think they can't get great results unless they have a camera that does everything for them or shoots 100 fps with a 100 megapixel sensor. That's my 2 cents worth on the matter.
I've been a wildlife photographer for 40 yrs and long before YT came on the scene and even going back to the very first days of AF in film cameras. The MP and FPS debate will continue to rage on, we managed with what we had and got the job done, albeit with far less successful hit rates than with ML & DSLR's of the last 15+ yrs! Nonetheless these days I'm using and thoroughly enjoying ALL of the 45MP's on both my Z9's. It's such a joy to be using these new ML bodies, whether it's Nikon, Canon or Sony!
Of course you can use lower MP cameras and I have taken many images with 8MP 1d Mark IIs, but it's a lot harder and now there are many brands who have the high MP, which would out you at a great disadvantage when selling your images. A lot of place won't even accept an 8 MP file these days
Jan, I love the channel and you are the reason I bought the original R5 and RF 100-500. I love my gear and have been enjoying it for years now. I know all the buzz right now is for the R5 ii, but that means there will be a lot of R5’s in the used market and a lot of potential new users. There are times I think Nikon is making more affordable gear for me. I would love to see a video on R5 with the 100-500 matched against a Z8 100-600. I’m basically wondering should I stay Canon or jump to Nikon as an enthusiast amateur. Btw,love the prosets! Stay well!
I like your suggestion, R5 II in R3 body! I have made a pre-order for R5 II. There were times that my R5 struggled keeping the birds in focus during flights. The new R5 should handle it quite easily.
Thanks so much again, Jan. One thing also no one seems to be mentioning is the ability to use focus bracketing with flash with the electronic shutter. This was not available on the Mark 1 and led to so many macro photographers meeting over to the OM system. I’m really looking forward to being able to focus stack properly with flash now. So hoping that it works properly!
Hi Jan, I feel your pain, in a few days time I'm heading to Kruger National Park, with a checked in lugged full of tripods, car window mount, fluid head, chargers for many types of gadgets, torches, binos, you name it (plus a spare pair of shorts and a couple of t-shirts 😆) Not to mention the backpack for carry on plus the 600, so I hope I get thru check in OK !!! Good luck and safe travels with your trip !! 🤠😎
Already preorder the R5 ii, I think it is a great upgrade to an already fine camera, all gearbhas limitations, just need to learn howcto work around them, have a great trip
I do sports and think the R1 should have 45 MP too as we often want to get even closer into the action. I shoot wide enough to make sure I don't miss any action or can anticipate the action so I often crop in post - reason why I use the R5. I ordered both to see if the R5II will give me enough reason to keep it over the R1's capabilities. We'll see in November once I have hands on both to compare.
I'm in the "disappointed" camp when it comes to the R5 Mark II. That said, you've done the best job I've seen defending this upgrade as meaningful for stills shooters. Your use case does benefit more than most from the updates, but I appreciated hearing your perspective.
Happy hunting, Jan. I think you might be after the Palm Cockatoo and hope you get your shots. I'm currently in the Flinders Ranges, hoping for anything with feathers. A WTE almost flew into me on the way in today. Wish I had dashcam. 😅 I, too, have ordered the R52 after dismissing the R1 due to the sensor size. I'm sure I'll be very happy with my choice.
As always a great and informative video Jan. Out in the bush, the clothes gets dirty anyway, so taking a lot with you does m=not help hehehe. But taking as much as possible of photo equipment is more important. They can stop work, so having extras is a must. Wishing you a amazing trip, with a lot of photos and good memories. Cheers, Bjoern
Yep, I'm hearing you about packing to go on trips. 2 camera bags and a drone bag and just a small bag with clothes 🤣. In regards to the new canon gear, I just bit the bullet and sold my Canon gear and moved over to the Z8 with the Z 600MM f4 TC, and I couldn't be happier. The R5 was great, but the canon just doesn't have the lens selection Nikon has. Canon also doesn't seem to care about wildlife photographers either.
Thank you Jan for your video and your thoughts. I am s Nikon shooter and I like the Z9 in the field. It is robust, the battery is big and it is heavy. You are completely right: disappointment with the R1 is: many people want a robust flagship camera. The R1 is a great upgrade from the R3. Canon made the mistake not naming the R3: R1. And in future they can bring a higher megapixel camera with a bigger body (for example the R2 or R1s). For me in the future the best camera has the specs from a Sony A9III with more then 45 MB and a robust body: birds are small, cautious and fast. Best wishes for your trip, Roland
Exactly what I thought when I went through the specs: 14 bit RAW with electronic shutter makes electronic shutter finally usable without compromise - big improvement! Once it comes to shadow recovery, 12 bit just doesn't cut it. I tested this initially at my R5, and use only mechanical shutter on the R5 since. No oversampled 4k 60 is disappointing, though, even R6 II does it. And these in-camera AI 'enhancements' go in the wrong direction, too.
@@jan_wegener I hope they will make this happen via firmware update. On a tripod, 24p or 30p is fine, but 4k with a moving camera does sometimes make more sense in 60p, otherwise it tends to look sloppy. Anyway, let's celebrate the 14 bit with electronic shutter: this is huge for stills shooters, and would make me finally use electronic shutter.
@@jan_wegener No, it simply looks sloppy as-is when you look at moving background on a high resolution screen - not fluent - like a bad laptop screen set to 30fps when scrolling so to say... More sharpness demands faster frame rates, unless camera position is stable and things either don't move, or move relatively fast, given everything is in focus. See at 5:20 here e.g. ... A moving bird with blurred background doesn't need 60p, I agree...
Agree 100% with your argument about having an high mpx R3. That would be a big seller IMO. I have to give you props for at least being somewhat critical of Canon's choices here, unlike most who love everything Canon releases. I would think you are the preeminent bird photographer and its good to have someone of your expertise commenting. Seems there are millions of Canon loyalists who claim the R5 body and battery are "more than enough" for anyone's needs. I have shot the R5 and a 1DX2 in heavy rain and the R5 shut off while the IDX2 didn't miss a beat. There is a difference because if there wasn't, these companies would put small batteries and less durable bodies on every camera to save money. And I would hold off on the idea that "action priority" and the ability to determine where a volleyball is going will translate to finding a songbird in heavy cover. That's a different situation entirely and the R5 certainly didn't excel at that. Plus $4300 plus close to another $700 for grip and batteries puts it at Z9 price range. For me the R5 is a hard pass. Maybe if I had to shoot women's volleyball though I would be so thrilled 🤣
Thank you Jan. I am not yet ready to switch to R5ii although it does offer some improvements over my R5, the improved AF, stacked sensor and an electronic shutter I can control are very tempting. The majority of reviews seem to concentrate on video and in the sports arena so although I came close to a preorder decided to wait for real world usage particularly wildlife so I look forward to your reviews in the anticipation that they may be the trigger for another change of mind!
Agree that the ES bit depth improvement is a big deal. For photography in a theater from the audience seating, I like to use ES so as not to bother others with shutter noise, and there the low noise performance clearly shows because I like to use high shutter speeds which requires high ISO. Also, for microscopy, the first curtain shutter still vibrates the apparatus when it starts the exposure, so ES is best. Again, low noise perf an be very important.
For someone like me looking for a second camera body to use in the field, the R5ii is a solid upgrade but not so much to make the original R5 obsolete. They are both great cameras.
Jan, I agree with your thoughts and was disappointed with the R1 and R5Mk2. I had hoped that the resolution would be increased on both. I pre-ordered the R5 Mk 2 to replace my 4-year-old R5 but seriously considered holding onto the R5. The R5 has been a fantastic camera, and while I shot different kinds of birds than you, I loved the 45 mp sensor on the R5. I was ready to shell out the extra $2K for the R1, but the low resolution was a deal breaker. I hope Canon comes to its senses and upgrades the R1 to 60-80 mp to make it a real flagship. Good luck with your upcoming shoot.
Shooting with an R3 I intended to order the R1. My current thoughts are that a R5 MARK II might be a better choice for a wildlife photographer. I really like your ideas for the R3 Mark II.
Good luck with your planned trip. I would love to be able to join you for it. I love my Dji Pocket camera it is easy to use, Just don't get it to wet. Michael
I think the R5 is perfect for me as I don’t need a pro body, although it would be nice to have more power to drive both focusing motors in my lenses that have them. What I’d really would like to the see a R7 Mark II with all the features of the R5 II to complement my R5 II as another tool in the toolbox for more reach! 😊
Good points Jan. If you use electronic shutter then the R5 II is a nice upgrade with the reduced rolling shutter and getting 14 bit files (in addition to higher fps). I agree that the 14 bit files from the eshutter has been under appreciated. I am very much looking forward to more testing as there are reports of higher DR and lower noise from this new sensor. I've seen initial samples that appear to have less noise. However, I'd like to see more testing. The new autofocus and action priority modes look amazing for sports photography but, I wonder how much better the R5 II autofocus will perform for wildlife. There are a lot of great features for discriminating between multiple subjects to find the one that is at the center of the action for sports. Most of the time for wildlife, I don't have that many subjects in my viewfinder. The R5 is already pretty good at that so, I wonder if one will feel any difference with the R5 II with wildlife. Looking forward to your testing!
hi Jan I do agree with you : 14 bit , anti flicker options and flash sync capabilities in ES ... I'm never going to need the mechanical shutter ever again ! I think it's huge ! the only thing that still bothered me was the non 4 axis rear screen....so I bought the external monitor you recommended a while ago... my R5mk ii should arrive on the 20th of august ! so I might see your review before getting it ! BTW I would have bought a "pro body" r5 mkii I hope a faster fps shooting mode ( 60 fps in crop mode for instance) comes in a firmware update...and a 4k 60 oversampled as well I wish you all the best for your upcoming trip
I think R5 Mk2 is a great option as it supports battery grip, higher megapixels will give us more reach since we can crop it further. Also it'll probably provide an even higher reach than the R7 if it's "in body upscaling" does a good job. I'll definitely buy the R5 mk2 because of it's new viewfinder eye track autofocus feature. It just seems to be the dream body. And it's about the same price if not cheaper with all the accessories and multiple backup batteries. It'll be a great fit to the 200-800 lens.
Hi Jan, like you I believe the R5 II is a class leading camera. My only deception is the lack of increased MPs. As you said, we need to crop. That is the wildlife reality and even a minor improvements in MPs would have been welcomed. I won't buy the R5 II only for financial reasons otherwise this camera seems to be a beautiful camera. As for the R1 it is a 'niche' camera for sports and action shooters. Very interesting video Jan !
Glad to hear you are doing better. Cassowaries are very interesting, but the idea of being surrounded by them as you mentioned does sound pretty scary knowing how aggressive they can be. But you guys living in Australia are tougher than us wimps.
I definitely would rather have an R5M2 in a R3 body, with 2 CFe cards. I don’t know why Canon is so slow to figure this stuff out. It’s simple. Sadly, Canon has not addressed my needs and now I don’t think I will ever own that which I feel I need. Also, yes, I’m exactly like you when i travel, extra bags for electronics (cameras, lens, laptops, AVP, etc).
I was going to keep my R5 and get a new lens but after handling the R5 Mkii i preordered it. Looks like an improvement over the r6 mkii in terms of AF with the resolution of the R5 and faster readout to boot. I also agree on the impact of the bit level, i would switch to mechanical shutter mode to prevent image degradation with the r5. The precapture also seemed better than on the r6, was laggy for me when i had it.
R5ii seems like an excellent advance--aside from the HD card slot and the subpar weather sealing. Assuming that the AF is vastly improved for birds in the R5ii, what I will be really waiting for is a Canon zoom that is longer than the 100-500 and of better quality than the unimpressive 200-800 lens. Best wishes for your health and enjoy the Iron Range...?
The r5ii is the camera i have been after! I actually left the canon system last year but i will be getting an r5ii and coming back. I just wish they put two cf express card slots in or maybe like some of the sonys and two sd/cf b card slots.
Thank you Jan for your insights on the Canon releases of the R5 MkII and R1... I agree with all your insights... Though I am a Z9 shooter myself, I would like to add 3 more things about the R5 MkII... 1. IBIS wobble on wider lenses 2. Better noise in video in shadow areas 3. Eye control autofocus As for the R1... What if they called it the R2 MkII... In your opinion would it have made a difference???
Princess Parrot but that’s not a cockatoo so I haven’t got a clue what you’re going to photograph, but best of luck! I pre-ordered the R5 MK2. It has all things I wanted changed in the MK1, so I can’t complain
It's got be buggered why people seem to have had such strange expectations of the R1. The 1 series has always been a sports camera, the 3 has always been an experimental platform with only intermittent model releases, the 5 has always been the photographers all-rounder (most of whom don't want a large built in grip body). The R5 2 is definitely an incremental upgrade, but again, what on earth did people expect? It's not like there has been a paradigm shift in technology in the interim, like the introduction of mirrorless tech that made the R5 seem such a big jump. If I hadn't accidentality crushed my R5, I'd sit with it until it needed changing, however since it's gone to heaven, I've pre-ordered an R5 2 while I get by with my R6 2 (which I like, but I need the extra cropping space the 5 gives me).
Yes totally, the cropping in the r5-2 is very useful and will save allot of time. Those people are new to the game. Probably never even touch the original 5d, lol the 5dsr got one of these options to crop in the body as well.
I would consider the R5 MK2 a significant not incremental upgrade to the R5. For those of you comparing the two models the improvements in the R5 Mk2 include the following: 1) Stacked sensor with faster readout and less rolling shutter 2) Faster 30 fps vs. 20 fps 3) 14-bit RAW at 30 fps vs. 12-bit RAW at 20 fps 4) RAW pre-capture 5) Inclusion of EyeControl AF 6) Improvements in AF Tracking 7) User adjustable frame rates 8) Ability to have shutter sound when using the electronic shutter 9) AE metering divided into 6144 zones for more precise exposure vs. 384 in R5 10) faster top shutter speed of 1/32000 sec 11) Increased number of shots and video recording time 12) Black-out free EVF
00:51 You're going to Cape York, looking for Palm Cockatoo! You'll beat us to it, then... We'll arrive Thursday Sept 19 and leave on Monday Sept 23. We'll stay at the Portland House. There's no telling how well we'll manage, Aussie newbies as we are! By then we'll only really have a 10 day's loop in NT to boost our knowledge...
My only gripes with the R5Mii is the slower stacked sensor. We will have to see if it matters in the field though. Well that and the lack of great wildlife lens options that nikon has.
@@AstairVentof for sports maybe, but for wildlife honestly it's not like even the R5i's rolling shutter was a deal breaker for even pros. My guess is it'll be a non issue and indiscernible from the other stacked sensors out there.
@@simonthibodeau7082 I'm currently shooting the R6mii and sometimes I notice the rolling shutter, yet its faster than the R5. It really depends on what you are shooting. If its static birds and mammals then you're fine. But when I shoot hummingbirds it can ruin shots. I'm thinking that it should be fine since its only a bit less than half the speed of the Z8/A1 but the pricing makes it a harder sell especially when many of the updates that would distinguish it seem to be software based. Meaning other brands might implement true raw precapture after the fact.
Jan: I hope you make the trip. Cape York, Palm Cockatoo? Best of luck and I look forward to your videos. If so, I'm sure you'll get the Eclectus too! Re. the R5-2. Ticks most of the boxes for improvement. Improved AF/ precapture/ no rolling shutter. One bug bear for me is the auto sensor that turns the monitor off when you are trying to show someone a pic from back of camera. How embarrassing. I could put tape over it. Better to simply disable it somehow.
I so agree with the body issue. I was hoping the R1 would have 45mp. Having a 1dxMK2 the body is great, and bigger battery too. Agree that if Canon gave us 45mp in R1 body everyone would be happy. So a new camera R2 with everything from R1 and 45mp sensor and it would sell great.
Bitte weiter so.
hi again Jan I just received the portkey external display. on my r6 mkii, in stills mode, the evf and touchscreen are deactivated. fortunately not in movie mode. I'm looking forward to knowing if it remains the same on the R5 mk ii. definitely not a major issue but it would be great to regain access to all the functions of the touchscreen and be able to quickly switch from external monitor and evf.
Thanks for this very very good comment on the new cameras. I think you are definitely right - and Canon had different pro bodies in former times - do you remember the 1d and 1ds bodies? As long as it is as it is… I will stay with my R3 and love it with its 24mb….
i completely agree about the R5 having a pro body for photographers, i go to test them both out at teds Maroochydore the other day and that R1 feels amazing in the hand. and that view finder was awesome. but for teh money the R5 is the bomb just have to buy the grip with it . both were awesome to play with but lotto win i think id go the R1 for the body. that used to do teh 5ds high mega pixel so why not a r1 S for landscape ?? i just got the pocket 3 for my videos and im sure youll love it it does such a great job!
Palm cockatoos! They're kind of your white whale lol😂. Good luck, I also hope you get eclectus, double-eyed fig and maybe even red-cheeked parrots if you're extra fortunate! Excited to see a new website too!
The R5mkii is a great upgrade for Canon shooters but I don't see that it will attract many Nikon shooters to the brand. For Sony shooters it's less obvious as Sony doesn't really have anything comparable in the lineup (but since wildlife shooters with Sony all just paid-up for the A1, the R5mkii is not enough of an incentive to move to Canon). So it's a great option if you are in the eco-system already but not much of a reason to change. The R1 is such a niche camera, I could see Canon resurrecting their strategy of the past when they had a Canon 1D and 1Ds - I could actually see an R1s with the R5mkII sensor announced in 6 months.
I wonder if we as photographers are allowing our pride to interfere with common sense judgments? I have a IPhone pro 15 . I now use it on my z8 as a screen for filming videos. It connects via my phone to my z 8 and gives me full control over the setting iso f stop and shutter spend plus a good idea of what I am doing picture frame wise. The other thing I use it for is frame finding by filming in the iPhone I get an impression of the area and easy to see the locations beauty spots had a camera allows . I film using the z 8 and find I can get away with out using the more complex gimbal. I would imagine canon has an app same as snap bridge? Really for older photographers like me (70) it helps with the bending into awkward positions . You can buy a small rig mount for the flash mount and it works really well holds connection well and is reasonably fast connection wise. So it’s worth trying out different but it works for me more so on a tripod . I can set up lower to the ground see what the cameras sees focus and shoot . May be iPhone would give you a thumbs up if you promoted it a useful piece of camera accessory hope you get to do your trip . And thank you from your friendly advice . Ps when set on a tripod it give me a free hand to look around knowing I have to touch the screen to start recording or I can record and still have the freedom to look around for a second to see if I was missing something . Hope you did not mind me pointing this out
Hallo Jan, gute Reise!
My R5 Mark 2 has been ordered and will hopefully come with me to Costa Rica in September. Have fun, lots of birds and great pictures on your trip! Meine R5 Mark 2 ist bestellt und kommt hoffentlich im September mit nach Costa Rica. Viel Spaß, viele Vögel und tolle Bilder auf euren Trip!
I always thought the R1 would directly replace the 1D. Not a general purpose camera per se (although there isn't much you can't do with it), but the go-to camera for pros with a sideline press pass. The 1DX still is apparent when you look at what people are using with their $20K super telephoto primes. That's where the R1 will be.
Think you need to assess new cameras against your own needs. I own an R5. For me all the new features you mentioned in the R5 meet my needs/expectations. I watched the launch video, and some hands on reviews and ordered on that day. Considered R1 but for me it would be overkill and add to overall weight of my gear.
Yes, I would use a R5II over my R5 without question because of precapture, less rolling shutter, better IBIS, etc...but wish Canon had more lenses for wildlife. I'm tired of the 100-500 with the teleconverter limitations and would like something with more reach. 200-800 is not available, almost a year after release.
@@codebunniesI feel the same. I'm really tempted to switch from my R6Mii and 100-500 to the Z8 and either their 500pf or 180-600. I'm used to the Canon body and I like having three dedicated command dials. I love my RF 28-70. If the R5Mii was not so expensive, we find that the rolling shutter is minimal and the lens options improved I would see no reason to leave Canon. I really wish they would fix the buffer issue though...
Hi Jan!! I ama bird photographer for the past decade and half and do have a R5 , R7 and yes am still holding on to my much reliable 1DX Mark 3!! The actual flagship at that time.. never disappointed me anytime except for the shutter sound and the speed! I usually reserve it for extreme low light photography at close distance My question is.. 1. Is it high time to swap my 1DX3 for a R 6 Mark 2 of R3? 2. Add R5 Mark 2 to the existing kitty
Agreed on most. But I think the biggest deal in R5ii is the variable electronic shutter. My biggest challenge is waiting for buffer to clear. At 15fps standard electronic, I should be able to go to 300 shots per buffer. And I don't want to go to craw to achieve 130 and be shooting craw when its not needed. The 14bit electronic is nice to have but my understanding is that it does not matter above 400 iso, and for animals this rarely happens. The biggest downside is $3000 upgrade costs (2,300 sell buy, $500 new batteries, and $200 for a bigger card to manage the 30fps and precapture. And another $400 for new grip for cooling if you are a video person).
Jan, no matter what Canon does you know there will still be people who will not be happy. IMO the Canon R5 Mark II and the R1 are cameras that offer great features, once production cameras are available, and photographers who are knowledgeable use these new cameras then the cameras will speak for themselves. 👍👍😎
Thanks!
Thank you!
Keep the R3 like it is, but bring in a high MP R2 camera with the R5ii features maybe 60mp and pro-body.
deal!
@jan_wegener I'd buy that
@@neelsfer that will do it 👏👍
Like the reflex era, Canon should make more than one version of R3 and R1.
Personally, I won't be buying either an R1 or an R5II.
Palm Cockatoos in the Far North I reckon. Hope you have a great trip when you finally go!
Correct, I hope so too!
Enjoy you trip Jan. I'm thinking the wild looking Palm Cockatoo 😎
Ordered the R5M2. Love your idea of a ProR5M2 as additional option!
You hit the nail on the head for what I want in a wildlife camera. I came from a Sony A7R4 to a Canon R5 and for the most part, I am happier with the R5 but boy do I miss those 61MPS.
Hope you’re feeling better!
Your explanation of the complaints of wildlife photographers is spot on.
Hi Jan.
I hope to receive my R5 MK II soon, and I totally agree with you. I was so happy to hear, that we will have 14 bits all over - also with the electronic shutter! You are the first to compliment on this!
Jan, DK
Have fun, Jan! I have that drone and it's great! Hope you have fun and get some great shots!
Having full 14-bit RAW files at high speed in the R5 Mk II is a huge advantage over the original. I pre-ordered a R5 Mk2 within 3 min of the launch.
It will be for sure
Enjoy your trip Jan! Good luck with your adventure 😊
Thank you! 😃
Have a fabulous adventure up north and keep well. I'm hoping to get up that way next winter. Looking forward to seeing some images from the trip.
Enjoy your trip. All the best!
Keep the Z9 😁
For me, it’s all about the “affordable” good quality long glass. 600pf 👍
Have a great journey! And good luck with the photos!!
Thank you! Will do!
Got to be the Palm! Sorry to hear of your health issues. Enjoy your trip and best wishes from the Mallee :)
A big part of it is that higher resolution screens and viewing devices make it much harder to get away with low megapixel shots than in the past.
They made a living because they weren't competing with 45 megapixel sensors.
Of course you can use lower MP cameras and I have taken many images with 8MP 1d Mark IIs, but it's a lot harder and now there are many brands who have the high MP, which would out you at a great disadvantage when selling your images. A lot of place won't even accept an 8 MP file these days
It is much easier! Catch the subject somehow and then crop it.
Sir you should be CEO of Canon. Your explanations and ideas are spot on. Also, you explain everything perfectly. Oh and your photography is stellar.
Thanks! 😃
Stay well!
Enjoy your trip, hope that you get to have your familiy with you too.
It’s always a bit nerve wrecking
Have a nice trip Jan and enjoy your new drone! 😎😎😎
Yes! Thank you!
Yes that would’ve been nice even tho I don’t shoot much in 60p
@@jan_wegener I hope they will make this happen via firmware update. On a tripod, 24p or 30p is fine, but 4k with a moving camera does sometimes make more sense in 60p, otherwise it tends to look sloppy. Anyway, let's celebrate the 14 bit with electronic shutter: this is huge for stills shooters, and would make me finally use electronic shutter.
@@tom_k_ddo you slow it down in post?
@@jan_wegener No, it simply looks sloppy as-is when you look at moving background on a high resolution screen - not fluent - like a bad laptop screen set to 30fps when scrolling so to say... More sharpness demands faster frame rates, unless camera position is stable and things either don't move, or move relatively fast, given everything is in focus. See at 5:20 here e.g. ... A moving bird with blurred background doesn't need 60p, I agree...
@@tom_k_dah yes with the movement for sure
Wishing you safe travel and Health and of course Happiness cheers JB
Good luck with your upcoming shoot.
absolutely convinced that this is a very interesting update! :)
Looking forward to your testing!
hi Jan
I do agree with you : 14 bit , anti flicker options and flash sync capabilities in ES ...
BTW I would have bought a "pro body" r5 mkii
I hope a faster fps shooting mode ( 60 fps in crop mode for instance) comes in a firmware update...and a 4k 60 oversampled as well
I wish you all the best for your upcoming trip
I would not want an integrated grip camera but Z9 has you covered.
R5 Mark II pre ordered but really seems an incremental update. I always did struggle with autofocus tracking so hopefully this is improved.
Glad to hear you are doing better. Cassowaries are very interesting, but the idea of being surrounded by them as you mentioned does sound pretty scary knowing how aggressive they can be. But you guys living in Australia are tougher than us wimps.
Speak for yourself
@@NeungView I literally just did.
Palm Cockatoo 🌴
1. IBIS wobble on wider lenses
2. Better noise in video in shadow areas
3. Eye control autofocus
As for the R1...
For those of you comparing the two models the improvements in the R5 Mk2 include the following:
1) Stacked sensor with faster readout and less rolling shutter
2) Faster 30 fps vs. 20 fps
3) 14-bit RAW at 30 fps vs. 12-bit RAW at 20 fps
4) RAW pre-capture
5) Inclusion of EyeControl AF
6) Improvements in AF Tracking
7) User adjustable frame rates
8) Ability to have shutter sound when using the electronic shutter
9) AE metering divided into 6144 zones for more precise exposure vs. 384 in R5
10) faster top shutter speed of 1/32000 sec
11) Increased number of shots and video recording time
12) Black-out free EVF
Great video Jan. Remember back to the 1Ds which was a high megapixel version of the 1D. Perhaps an R3s? 🙏
That would be cool!
Jan, are you going to do a video on how to set up the R5 mark 2 for bird photography?
Yes
❤R5 Mark Ii
I like small size of R5, It would be great if they improved the weather sealing on a small body rather then using a bigger one.
Bitte weiter so.
hi again Jan
I just received the portkey external display. on my r6 mkii, in stills mode, the evf and touchscreen are deactivated.
fortunately not in movie mode.
I'm looking forward to knowing if it remains the same on the R5 mk ii.
definitely not a major issue but it would be great to regain access to all the functions of the touchscreen and be able to quickly switch from external monitor and evf.
That is the same for canon and Sony, only Nikon allows hdmi out and evf/screen for stills.
I hope it changes for canon but probably not
@@jan_wegener 🙏
Thanks for this very very good comment on the new cameras. I think you are definitely right - and Canon had different pro bodies in former times - do you remember the 1d and 1ds bodies? As long as it is as it is… I will stay with my R3 and love it with its 24mb….
Yes I had both of them back then
i completely agree about the R5 having a pro body for photographers, i go to test them both out at teds Maroochydore the other day and that R1 feels amazing in the hand. and that view finder was awesome. but for teh money the R5 is the bomb just have to buy the grip with it . both were awesome to play with but lotto win i think id go the R1 for the body. that used to do teh 5ds high mega pixel so why not a r1 S for landscape ?? i just got the pocket 3 for my videos and im sure youll love it it does such a great job!
Palm cockatoos! They're kind of your white whale lol😂. Good luck, I also hope you get eclectus, double-eyed fig and maybe even red-cheeked parrots if you're extra fortunate! Excited to see a new website too!
So do I! Fingers crossed
Hope you did not mind me pointing this out
I'm really happy about the new R5II and don't want a bigger camera body.
Hallo Jan, gute Reise!
Will they make a replacement for the 5DsR 🤔
Have not heard about the pocket 3 not turning on as I have one in my pocket since I bought it and it always works.
I usually reserve it for extreme low light photography at close distance
My question is..
Only issue I've had with my pocket 3 is the micro SD card sometimes claims its slow
The R1 is more like a R3m2 but either way, the R1 with the 100-300 f2.8 will be an on-demand combo at the Olympics
