Very cool to find a recent song reaction to this tune. I was introduced to this song by a good Japanese friend of mine 6 or 7 years ago. Apparently, it is one of the most popular Christmas songs in Japan to this day. The original Japanese version became famous when it was featured in a series of 1980s commercials for Japan Rail’s (JR) Xmas Express. The commercials, I feel, are well done for the time. The English in this version is actually good, too, especially when compared to the English typically found in Japanese music. Although I wasn’t around for much of the ‘80s, I have to say that this song really gives me a sense of nostalgia. Since learning of it, it has grown to be one of the songs I listen to every year. Happy holidays!!!

Tatsuro Yamashita (born February 4, 1953) is a Japanese singer-songwriter and musician.Born in Ikebukuro, Toshima Ward, Tokyo. His wife is Mariya Takeuchi, also a singer-songwriter.
"Christmas Eve" is Tatsuro Yamashita's 12th single, released on December 14, 1983 by Alpha Moon (currently Warner Music Japan).
"Christmas Eve" is a song that was cut as a single after being included in the album "MELODIES", and was later released as a best song on songs such as "TREASURES" and the all-time best album "OPUS ~ALL TIME BEST 1975-2012~".・It was also included in the album.
Since it was featured in JR Tokai's Christmas Express in 1988, sales have increased every year during the Christmas season, and it has become a long-selling J-Pop single that is listed in the Guinness World Records. Along with Yumi Matsutoya's ``My Lover is Santa Claus'', it is a standard J-POP Christmas song.
The song was originally written around 1981 for his wife Mariya Takeuchi's album, but it ended up not being used, so Yamashita decided to perform it himself.
The chord progression of this song is a progression often heard in baroque music, so we took inspiration from the ``cliché'' chord progression that is common in baroque music, used ``Christmas'' as the theme, and used Pachelbel's ``Canon'' from real baroque music as an interlude. Each was used.
At the same time, the song ``It rains late at night'', which had been attempted but unfinished during the Sugar Babe era, began to be sung, and due to pessimistic tastes, the song about heartbreak was set to coincide with Christmas, and the lyrics were blown away. It was finished in time.
Since the style of the Swingle Singers was expressed a cappella by one person, it took 48 takes for 8 bars and took 8 hours. The idea of changing the chorus at the end to take on an association-style approach was inspired by the sense of rivalry with the off-course music that was all the rage at the time.
The English version was originally created as material for the 1991 music video ``TATS YAMASHITA PRESENTS CHRISTMAS IN NEWYORK'', but was first included on the 1993 winter seasonal album ``SEASON'S GREETINGS''.
The 2000 edition was the first to include karaoke on CD, and the 2000 and 2003 editions include the English version with English lyrics by Alan O'Day and original karaoke.
Yamashita remastered it each time it was re-released in 1998, 2000, and 2003.
Although Yamashita is reluctant to distribute music by subscription, he distributed the 30th anniversary version on Amazon Music and Apple Music on Christmas Eve 2018.

OK - so I clicked because I got the artist confused with the composer Takashi Yoshimatsu, whose symphonies I have been listening to lately. But it's a nice, boppy tune. Thanks, and Happy Christmas!

Bloody awful but gets a thumbs up just for trying.
A bit like our woke UK schools where you get a prize for coming last. It's the taking part that counts, blah, blah, blah. We should tell that to Putin.
