I was in a bar in south Korea full of American sailors and Marines. This song started playing and everyone was singing along. Powerful moment that I will never forget.

I was in high school (just 15) in the spring of 1972 when "American Pie" zoomed up the song charts - it held the #1 spot for many weeks. Then as now, I constantly listened to music and knew the song was very special the first time I heard it. My wonderful tenth grade English teacher (Miss Prion) got a hold of the song's lyrics and we spent one entire class period going over the song, line by line, discussing the song and its deeper thoughts/meaning. A fun memory, all these years later! Thank you Mr. McLean!!

I was a senior in high school when it came out. Everyone knew it by heart in mere days. I still play it often.

I saw Don play at a center in NW Pennsylvania back in the 1990's. That guy has written a lot of good songs. In fact, American Pie overshadowed the rest of his works. I have been to many great concerts, but he was among the best. Right up there with Pink Floyd. The best concerts I have been to was Pink Floyd. I saw them in 1988 and 1994. Pink Floyd had millions upon millions in equipment, meanwhile Don was mostly the showcase with just his guitar, and what a magnificent job he did. I was entertained the whole time. Thank you Don for a great show in Chautauqua, NY.

Never cared for the song, but "Vincent" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written

I sang it on a karaoke night. It was just a few people. Someone saw it was on my list. I was like "ok but you know its a pretty long song" lol but I did it. Can't say it was the best, but. Ive had that memorized since I was a kid

Great to see Don still making music, have to pick up the documentary (buy direct from his site as there is no middleman and you can get some things autographed).

How many times did Newsmax report about the Sonata for flute, harp and violin, written by Debussy ? (or the Piano concerto no. 21, by Mozart) That’s magic….

This is the american way😊. Don uses his rare moment usefully or thats what he think. Giving no info not the best way to make people curious? His song is good of course.

Not really, he’s promoting himself and his music, IMO it’s actually refreshing as he remastered his Christmas album a few years ago and sells it direct, with an option for an autographed copy.

@ LOL, it’s his cow to milk and obviously working as you came to the party, not to mention he was part of the New Years Eve party. Considering what he makes yearly from just American Pie (the single) it’s still alive and kicking. DERP

Kind of makes you wonder if any of the books coming out will be about wife beating.
Perhaps that what Castles in the Sky is all about.
He was the one who pleaded guilty.

@@jfq7223 Could be, but he was with her for 24 years. You don't become stupid enough to raise your hand to one of them as you leave yourself wide open to the law. He was convicted of beating his wife, then, to top it off, this isn't like the old days where such things could be contained like they once were.
Kind of like going to war and making sure that your enemy is armed to the teeth before you have to go fight them.
Either choose wisely or leave when the leaving is easy.
