  • On the exact day (August 29) and in the exact place (the Stadtcasino in Basel, Switzerland) 125 years later, a gala event was held in honor of the First Zionist Congress in 1897. Convened by and presided over by Theodor Herzl himself, the First Zionist Congress set the wheels in motion for the creation of the Jewish State. Herzl is commemorated during several memorable presentations at this special gala event, and numerous speakers, Israeli and otherwise, explain the importance of his achievements. For instance, speakers included descendants of delegates to the original event, as well as a great-granddaughter of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, the French-Jewish military officer whose ordeal became known as the "Dreyfus Affair," and famously inspired Herzl the journalist to begin his work to establish the state of Israel. This event was hosted by Israeli TV personality Natasha Kirtchuk and was a program of the World Zionist Organization (WZO).
