This woman is brilliant. I have read both her books. She has changed how I communicate with actors (and my kids). The method she teaches removes confrontation between director/actor and opens a scene up to exploration.
Judith, or Judy, as I remember her, was also an amazing actress. Not only did I witness her power and talent as an artists, I also performed with her. But that was iyears ago, in a time and place that exits now only in memory. My memory at least. Judy, if you read this, it is me, John Proctor. Your were and still are a magnificient talent.
Judith you got my attention. Yes respect your actors and crew and lead them in a constructive way to follow your vision with the movie you are filming.
@TendrilsofTurmoil haha... I have feeling someone else directed this, not Judith Weston. The cutaway to the close-up of her book is a jumpcut. I noticed another jumpcut about half way through. Perhaps they are trying for a Godard-style edit in avertising for this book?
I consider myself an actor and I've been with a certain director, who would tell me I haven't got it in this scene. Why can't you do what you did before in the last scene? You had it then.
is it only me who finds this video complete and utter rubbish, i know many film makers who use line readings, i don't them my self but honestly, just using verbs to direct an actor is so plain, if result oriented direction is going to help an you achieve your vision as a film maker then do it that way, there is more than one way to direct actors !
A result direction might work once, but in my experience if a performance isn't working then giving a result might not work, unless they are a smart actor they might translate that result themselves into something playful. But she doesn't say to use verbs all the time.
The Fyn I've read chapters of the book - I think you are absolutely right. It's (in my opinion) bullshit. One thing is correct - line reading is complete nonsense. An actor is an artist, with his own visions and abilities to create a world - if you take that away from him - you get a mindless emotionless puppet. Cheers.

Judith, taking your workshop is one of the best decisions I've made as an actor. We love you!

Directing actors is an amazing book, if you want to learn more about directing you should really resas it. It is great
Both are great books and any serious Director should have them in their library.
All great writers work from subtext. i like that!!!

Thank you!
Really useful. :) thx mike for post
The best part in her book is about a baseball pitcher who failed because he was aiming the ball.
