30 Minutes Of Cold Water Magic In A Monterey Bay Kelp Forest | Relax, Chill, Ocean Therapy

- This past weekend was as good as it gets in the kelp forests of Monterey Bay-ocean sunfish (Mola mola) patrolling the dropoffs, rockfish schools lazily hiding among the columns of the kelp cathedral, millions of pyrosomes washing up with the currents among the other jellies; and all of it bathed in the clear jade-blue waters of coastal California at its best.
With everything going on in the world, I figured I'd throw together a long-form video of the highlights. There's no music, just me breathing-though, as a photographer, I'm using my breathing as buoyancy, so it may or may not be very relaxing. If it is, great! If not, mute this video and play some more fitting music alongside. Enjoy!

Hey, you guys have shot some beautiful pictures of this kelp forest. I wanted to ask informally if you would mind me using some of your footage in my class? I am a teacher for primary school and would like to show this to my kids and make some improvisational dance out of it (I especially like the scene with the fish between those two strands of kelp). I have thalassophobia (fear of the sea) but kelp forests are an exception, as long as theyre not deep id love to dive there sometime
@@Finnie1203 lmao im the exact opposite. When i go to the sea im not scared of the deep but when i go swimming in a lake and its like 3m deep with kelp in it it looks like it's about to drag me down
I can’t stand deep or shallow kelp. Kelp freaks me out, and that’ll never change.

Is this typical of the visibility in this area or and exceptional day? Where exactly is it? A boat dive or a shore dive? I'll be visiting soon and would love to dive this spot.

What is that wondrous floating object that shows up at 24:50? It is exquisitely graceful yet very mysterious, like some alien creature.
Apologies for the late reply! Those are Thetys vagina salps in their gonozooid chain form. Salps are incredible filter-feeding, gelatinous plankton related to tunicates ("sea squirts"). The chains are sequentially hermaphroditic from female to male as they age, and the eggs they produce become solitary individuals called oozoids that lay the chains by cloning themselves. Solitary Thetys vagina salps have two long tails, hence "twin-sailed salp" as another common name.

I'm an artist with an architecture background so I am always intrigued by biota that do not fit the usual profile of lifeforms. // I'll add that my favorite spot on the California coast is the kelp forest tank at the Monterey Aquarium. It has a profoundly intoxicating effect -- I have been known to stand in front of it for a very long time. One day I'll take the plunge (I hope).
