  • Despite the fact that the menu screen only takes place in one area of Bot Boneyard, the files for the full level were included in the game's demo!
Some differences between the demo version and the final version include:
Strange, destructible capsules containing ghosts in them. These appear to be placeholders for the game's 25th anniversary statues, however, the entities are specifically named "ghostJar" (this name is retained for the trophies in the final version of Bot Boneyard and some other levels, whereas other levels use the name "SilverPac" instead). One of them is visible in the main menu.
    No Galaxian maze.
Aside from one line, all of the dialogue lacks audio despite it existing in the demo's files.
The first conversation between Pac-Man and Orson takes place after the tutorial section is complete.
The tutorial section is somewhat broken.
The hints seem to correspond with an older control scheme.
A lot of fruit positions are different.
There is a briefing for this level.
There is a small acid pit at 5:33 that is not present in the final game but is present in the Nintendo DS version (thanks to SuperMarioFan123311 for pointing this out!)
At 9:46, the subtitles refer to Erwin as "Krunt" (thanks to XeviousSky for pointing this out!)

the acid pool at 5:33 is actually still present in the DS version, further proving my theory that the assets for that port were based on a much earlier build of the console game.

Interesting! I didn't catch that. That definitely seems to be the case then.

Interesting observation about the ghost canisters BTW: A friend of mine noticed them on the demo's title screen years ago and judging from the little bit of interaction for this game, I think it's safe to say they originally were going to be sort of a collectible or objective you had to free in each level, implying Erwin kidnapped more ghosts than just Inky and Clyde.

My theory is that Ghost Island wasn’t necessarily retconned at first, but rather it could be interpreted that Erwin probably raided it first then went after the realm for the actual power and syphoning

The DS version is basicaly a port of the beta! The small acid pit, the healt item, they don't have a Pac-Man Statue and Galaxians in a level! The title screen!

I forgot to mention this earlier, but I remember this level being called "Erwin's Pit" when I looked through the demo's files a long time ago (I'm sure I also saw the text where Erwin is called Krunt back then, but I somehow completely forgot about it).

Definitely like the brighter coloration here, even if it’s not particularly nice still, definitely would like to see this place closer to that junkyard concept art which was simply beautiful, very nice showcase here!

Huh, so it just loops once the goal is met with no completion screen or start menu in the demo, just like Gex Jr. Also, I wonder, were you initially meant to free ghosts from those domes instead of collecting trophies? Or was that just something they already had programmed for the final boss and just used it as a placeholder, never intending that as the function?

Yeah the imprisoned ghosts are really weird. Looking at them a bit more closely, it seems like it's not the same model that they used for the imprisoned Inky and Clyde in the final game. The models in the demo are called "m_spectral_ghost_cell" whereas the model for the cells Inky and Clyde are held in are called "m_spectral_ghost_cell_2". Furthermore, the entity names for the ghost cells are "ghostJar0#" (# being a number from 1 to 5). If they were just placeholders for trophies, it seems like the entity names would be something more like "trophy0#". In the final game, the entities for the trophies in Bot Boneyard are still called "ghostJar0#". A few other levels also have them labeled as ghost jars, while other levels have them labeled "SilverPac0#". Silver Pac is more commonly used.

Interesting, since the ghosts are allies in this game it would make sense if you were originally meant to free random ghosts that Erwin imprisoned. That might have been cooler actually for the sake of the story.

@@sheriffsheep1126 The demo is on a disc called Namco Transmission 3.1 (or 3.2). It's only for the PS2 unfortunately so you'll need a PS2 emulator to play it. You can find a download for it by doing a Google search for "Namco Transmission 3.2 archive" and clicking on the archive.org result.

It being an early name is interesting because “Erwin” is a name pretty common on a lot of the PAC-MAN Adventures concept art, wonder what the deal is with that.

Hi, could you kindly tell me how did you put the Boneyard Bot demo? i have tried to modify the game but when i do it doesn't work.

    • @Pac-Modder
      @Pac-Modder  Год назад

It's a bit tricky. You need to replace the string "FrontEndWorld" at RAM address 0x20481BA0 with "ingamemenus", and then set the 4-byte value at RAM address 0x21DA0C84 to 00000900. Then, press start and select at the same time while you're in the main menu to force the game to reload Bot Boneyard with a controllable Pac-Man. The method you'll need to use to change these RAM values depends on your version of PCSX2. For the latest builds of PCSX2, you can try to change these RAM values through a pnach file and see if that works. I haven't tested this myself since I personally find pnach files inconvenient for anything other than widescreen and deinterlacing patches. The other option is to download an older version of PCSX2 such as v1.6.0 since it does have a consistent base RAM address. This allows you to just use Cheat Engine and the addresses I provided.
