Footage of Korean women sexually enslaved by Japanese soldiers in WWII revealed for the first time

Japan's sexual enslavement of Korean women during World War Two is one unresolved issue that continues to strain relations between the two countries.
However, all these decades later,.... the Japanese government still tries to whitewash its wartime atrocities.
At long last evidence has been found that should aid Seoul's efforts to corner Tokyo into facing reality.
Lee Ji-won tells us more.
Women,... with faces full of fear,... are lined up against a wall.
A man, presumed to be a Chinese officer, talks to them.
This short 18 second video is of seven Korean women sexually enslaved by the Japanese soldiers in Yunnan province, southwest China, around the end of World War II.
It is the first-ever video footage of Korean victims that has been found.
On Wednesday, Seoul city and Professor Chung Chin-sung of Seoul National University unveiled the video from 1944,... which had been stored in the National Archives and Records Administration of the United States for over 70 years.
Previously,... footage of Chinese comfort women had been found,... but there were only pictures and documents on the Korean comfort women.
But after the professor and his research team were certain that a video on the Korean victims existed, they spent two years searching for the footage,... and they finally found what they were looking for amongst hundreds of film reels last month.
The footage was taken by an American combat photographer just after the region was reclaimed from Japan by the Chinese.
During World War II, an estimated 200-thousand women, mostly Koreans, were kidnapped and forced to become sex slaves for Japanese troops.
While an agreement between Korea and Japan was made by the previous Park Geun-hye administration in 2015,... where Japan financially compensated the victims with one billion yen, or about 8-point-9 million U.S. dollars, thousands of citizens and the surviving victims criticized and refused the deal as Tokyo claimed there was no evidence of the Japanese military forcing the enslavement of women.
But with Korea's newly elected President Moon Jae-in calling for renegotiation of the deal,... the research team says that they hope the footage will work as a tool to open up such talks.
"We hope the new findings will bring the public's attention and interest on the matter,... so that when President Moon has his first bilateral talk with the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, at the G20 summit later this week, an atmosphere for renegotiation can be made."
With only 38 Korean victims still alive,... the research team stressed their determination to uncover this video evidence of Japan's sexual slavery so that there's a chance for the issue to be resolved within their lifetimes.

Not just Korean women. They also did that in Malaysia. My late grandmother live through that era and she said in order to escape such a fate, all of the young girls, including her, would run and hide in the jungles. They learned to live in the jungles in order to avoid getting captured.

South Korea's top court on Thursday overturned a lower court ruling that found the author of a book on so-called comfort women guilty of defamation.
The Supreme Court sent the case back to the Seoul High Court, while indicating its intention to acquit the author, Park Yu-ha, honorary professor at Sejong University in South Korea.
In June 2014, former comfort women and others filed a criminal complaint against Park, saying that some statements in her book "Comfort Women of the Empire" had harmed their reputations.
In the book, first published in August 2013, Park said that comfort women, or those who worked as prostitutes for Japanese troops before and during World War II, had a comrade-like relationship with the Japanese side.

Some people claim that "Korean soldiers also raped Vietnamese women." I don't deny this. However, at least this was smaller than Japan's Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, and the South Korean government tried to apologize further to Vietnam. This report is based on the information obtained from the interrogation of twenty Korean "comfort girls" and two Japanese civilians captured around the tenth of August, 1944 in the mopping up operations after the fall of Myitkyin a in Burma.

The report shows how the Japanese recruited these Korean "comfort girls", the conditions under which they lived and worked, their relations with and reaction to the Japanese soldier, and their understanding of the military situation.
A "comfort girl" is nothing more than a prostitute or "professional camp follower"
The interrogations show the average Korean "comfort girl" to be about twenty-five years old, uneducated, childish, and selfish. She is not pretty either by Japanese of Caucasian standards.
In Myitkyina the girls were usually quartered in a large two story house (usually a school building) with a separate room for each girl. There each girl lived, slept, and transacted business. In Myitkina their food was prepared by and purchased from the "house master" as they received no regular ration from the Japanese Army. They lived in near-luxury in Burma in comparison to other places. This was especially true of their second year in Burma. They lived well because their food and material was not heavily rationed and they had plenty of money with which to purchase desired articles. They were able to buy cloth, shoes, cigarettes, and cosmetics to supplement the many gifts given to them by soldiers who had received "comfort bags" from home.
While in Burma they amused themselves by participating in sports events with both officers and men, and attended picnics, entertainments, and social dinners. They had a phonograph and in the towns they were allowed to go shopping.
The girls were allowed the prerogative of refusing a customer.
In the latter part of 1943 the Army issued orders that certain girls who had paid their debt could return home. Some of the girls were thus allowed to return to Korea.

Professor Chunghee Sarah Soh was born in South Korea and graduated from Sogang University. She then moved to the United States and received her Ph.D. in anthropology from University of Hawaii. If Korean comfort station owners had followed the Japanese military's order, there wouldn't have been any comfort women issue.
The Japanese military was partly guilty because its invasion into China and Southeast Asia did create the demand for comfort women. But the Korean narrative -- the Japanese military showed up at the doors and abducted young Korean women -- just didn't happen. The Korean businessmen (comfort station owners) capitalized on the demand, recruited Korean women, operated comfort stations and made lots of money. Japan has apologized for its part. South Korea should admit its complicity and stop demanding Japan for more apologies.

Prosecutors on Friday demanded a five-year prison term for independent Rep. Youn Mee-hyang on charges of embezzling funds donated to help support women who were camp followers during World War II.
Youn was accused of collecting hundreds of millions of won in donations to her private bank accounts and spent some of them for personal use, including living expenses, while heading a major civic group for Korean camp followers in the WW2 , the so called Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance for the Issues of Korean camp followers in the WW2.
Youn led the group between 2005-20 before winning a parliamentary seat on the Democratic Party's (DP) ticket in 2020. The DP expelled Youn in 2021, and she has since been an independent.
Prosecutors have pressed charges of violating the subsidy management act and the donation collection act as well as embezzlement.

The articles were drawn from interviews with veteran Seiji Yoshida who claimed he had seen women from the South Korean island of Jeju being abducted to work as sex slaves, now widely discredited.
“I apologize to readers for publishing the erroneous articles and being too late in making the correction,” Mr Kimura,the president of the Asahi Shinbun, was quoted as saying yesterday and resigned.
If it is true, we should keep it in our memory. But what we have learned in the last 30 years is not necessarily so. The testimony of the elderly women who claimed to be victims was distorted and fabricated by left-wing civic groups and became propaganda around the world. What is the point of such a fabricated story?
The essential problem of the comfort women issues was poverty. Mostly, poor parents pushed their daughters to work as comfort women in exchange for a few advances, or otherwise, the daughters sacrificed themselves for their families. Therefore, the truth is that there was no forced mobilization by the Japanese military.
Japan has never denied that its military used comfort stations where Korean comfort women worked. Whether it was coercive or not, Japan has apologized for Korean women's suffering. When the allied forces prosecuted war criminals, the comfort women system never became an issue because the U.S. military reports concluded with testimonies from Korean women that they either volunteered or were sold by their parents to Korean comfort station owners.
When Japan apologized for what it did during the war, its sincerity was backed by 50 odd years of good behavior.

Former comfort women's statements are likely to be unreliable, or even contrived. One cannot help but conclude that there is a hidden, ulterior motive to their demanding reparations and apologies from Japan on the basis of groundless accusations.

Same here in Philippines, in our history there is a thing called "comfort women"( during the time of Japanese Invasion). Funny how adamant Shinzo Abe was about attempting to rewrite Japan’s blood stained and sordid history of war crimes in Asia, not as the warped blood-and-soil nationalism it was but instead as some warped and thinly veiled attempt at democracy only to be gunned down by one of his own country men. Karma is a cruel and careless mistress indeed. I find it eerie how folks all over the world give Japan a pass at this sort of behavior when it undoubtedly would result in heavy reprimanding in the west (rightfully so of course).
Example: Say for instance the current chancellor of Germany was the grandson of Hitler’s right hand man and one of his most trusted cabinet members. Now let’s say that Chancellor lead several tirades in which he not only openly excused the actions of Hitler but said the Jews weren’t forced into death camps, that they joined by choice, and that history has greatly exaggerated the extent of the genocide against those people. Say that same chancellor went on to critique those who called his grandfather (a loyal dog of Hitler) a fascist by saying such notions are “repulsive” and then went on to make sweeping surveillance laws targeting the media, free speech and critical journalists as a whole? Do you think the world would have kind words to say at the assassination of such a person? Well funny enough Shinzo Abe did exactly what I just described when confronted with his grandfather’s war crimes and following his death people called HIM A CHAMPION OF DEMOCRACY 😭 it’s almost laughable. We as people need to do a better job at criticizing our governing bodies equally regardless of what type of fondness you have for Japan, it’s people, culture, language and all of the other tools the Japanese government has created to instill a false sense of kinship and nationalism in people across the world. No amount of anime, ramen, Jpop, manga or rides on the Shinkansen should ever make a person willingly turn a blind eye to falsehoods and deceit. You can enjoy parts of a country and culture and still critique it, in fact the stability and safety of the people within nations ruled by those like Shinzo Abe is dependent upon all of us holding these people accountable even in death. I say this as someone who loves Japan, who is an N1 JLPT, who literally set my entire life trajectory up so that I could immigrate there, I even attended undergrad at The University of Tokyo and still within all that love, admiration and respect for the country and it’s people I know w/ 100% certainty that regardless of the circumstances surrounding his death he was NOT a good or righteous man, far from it and this article from 5 years prior to his death is just one example. The same can be said for Queen Elizabeth. Regardless of how old or innocent she may have seemed she was not only a Nazi sympathizer but she also decimated the lives of people in more countries in her life time than any other one person in history. She was not a kind and gentle soul and she doesn’t deserve to rest in peace. They both deserve the same anguish, sadness, hardship and toil in death that they ruled and lived by in life.
