  • Mark and Jim surprise attack Ryan Muckenhirn with the 7x64. Wait, that came out wrong. Ryan is OK…. We invite Ryan to chat with us about the popular-in-Europe 7x64, but don’t let him know the topic at hand until we begin recording. That should clear things up. A listener request, this interesting 7mm cartridge will make quick work of most critters. Listen in to get Ryan’s take on it, as well as hear Jim somehow weave in a challenge to all of Europe. Thanks a lot, Jim.

Here in South Africa we tend to have a very sweet spot for the 7mm bore diameter with regards to the 7x57 and more over the 7x64 of late. With so much history dating back to the Anglo-Boer war, the Boers used the Mauser 98 chambered in 7x57 to great extend and effectiveness over the British Lee-Enfield .303. The 7x57 was used by the Boers for basically everything, from fighting wars to putting food on the table to protecting against wild animals like leopards, lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, you name it. Today it is still considered to be a very fine and capable cartridge that can take down just about every game specie outside dangerous game here. From thick bushveld hunting with 175gr thumpers to open plains game with 140gr bullets, the 7x64 can and will do it as Ryan said "modestly" without being overly destructive. As with .30 caliber bore also being very popular here, it doesn't hit home like the 7mm's do as it is common here to hunt big game with a smaller caliber. .222-50 and .243 frequently put some big game on the dinner tables here.
A little history of the 7x64, the 7x64 Brenneke was designed by Wilhelm Brenneke as a possible replacement cartridge for the German Empire during WW 1. Unfortunately for the Germans, the war ended before Brenneke's design could take hold and had to be left aside until the outbreak of WW 2 where he presented his design to the Nazi military command as a replacement to the 8x57 as it was ballisticly superior to the 8x57. The Nazi Military command kept with the 8x57 as their standard military issue and Brenneke's design had be side shelved again until the end of the war.
After WW 2, military cartridges were deemed illegal for civilian possession as surplus military rifles were available at the time. The 7x64 was then introduced as a replacement option on the civilian market and quickly became one of the most popular calibers on the European continent as it's ballistic and terminal performance was superior to many other available calibers at the time.
It's a ballistic twin to the .280 Rem, a necked down 30-06 case with a slightly longer neck to accomodate the longer, more ballistic coefficient bullets that the .284 calibers offer with almost the same powder charge as from a 30-06 with less recoil and felt effort.
Just thought I'd babble a bit on this amazing cartridge. I absolutely have a love affair with 7mm bore diameter. I think my wife is jealous of that fact.🤣🤣
Thanks for the awesome work you guys put into your channel. Really enjoy the reviews. Keep up the good work.
    Greeting from South Africa🇿🇦

7x64mm is not a popular cartridge in Finland but some use it for sure.
Here the most popular ones are .308 Win and 9,3x62mm for moose and whitetails. A lot of people use other ones as well but those two are the big ones.
For smaller game there's a lot more diversity, .222 is widely used for grouse and everything between that and .308 is good for roe deer.
Distances are rarely over 150 meters except for birds. Very dense forest and limited visibility so ballistic performance is not a big deal.
I would say the top 5 for big game are these:
    #1 .308 Winchester
    #2 9,3x62mm
    #3 6,5x55 Swedish
    #4 .30-06
    #5 7x57 or 8x57

7x64 with barrel 24 inches and 140gr bullets is for small to medium game and with 175gr bullets is for big game hunting (wild boars in Balkan countries are very big, males are 300-400 pounds). And 7x64 have very mild recoil equal to 308 but the energy of 7 Remington Magnum. So, the popularity of 7x64mm is in 7 pounds rifle, soft in shoulder, long range capable and lot of knock down power 😉

250 Savage- first smokeless cartridge to hit 3000fps, and the parent case of the 22-250 Remington. Originally offered in the Savage 99 and Savage 1920.
300 Savage- First attempt at equaling the 30-06 in a short action, and the inspiration (or parent case) of the 308 Winchester. Originally offered in the savage 99 and savage 1920.
400 Whelen- wildcat by Townsend Whelen, a 30-06 necked up to use 405 Winchester bullets. Use 30-06 basic cases or 35 Whelen cases. Using normal 30-06 cases will result in headspace issues (from what I’ve read). From what I can find, only ever offered in custom Griffin and Howe rifles.

With the right bullet and an ethical, experienced hunter, the 243 Win is plenty for lots of game. It’s legal for elk hunting in New Mexico. While I would advise more for such a large, tough animal, there’s no doubt that a well placed 243 can get the animal down and dead! I haven’t utilized the solid copper or bonded bullets, I’m convinced that a Swift A-Frame or Nosler Partition would drive deep enough and expand sufficiently to cause mortal damage to an elk.

    British here 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
I’ve shot the 7 x 64 Brennecke at driven wild boar in Croatia in the winter. The 7 x 64 is a cartridge that is in between a .270 and a 3006. It has the fast flat trajectory of a 270 Winchester and the thump of a 3006.
I would not put it up there as far as a 7 mm Remington Magnum but more the 3006. And yes it is very popular among mainland Europe, not as much in Britain but mainland Europe it most certainly is, I think it is the preferred cartridge as it will take any European game.
I speculate on this next point but I think it was made 7mm because the legal calibre requirement for shooting certain game in Germany was 7 mm and the only 7 mm I know that existed I believe during the last century was the 7 x 57 mm Mauser, so basically Brenneke gave it a bigger explosive charge for the same bullet. It, the 7x64 may have been used in ww2, i did read an article about it online but I can’t remember if it was or not.

The Minimum Caliber on Fellow Deer, Red Stag, Wildboar and Chamois in Germany is 6.5 with a minimum of 2000 Joule of Energy at 100 Meter. The 7x64 was created cause it was easy to fit in a regualar Mauser 98 System where the 7x57 and 8x57 has left room open.
The 7x64 is nowadays most popular in France cause it is no Military Cartridge (they are not allowed to have Military Related Cartridges in Privat use) the 7x64 is for Continental Europe the same as 30.06 for American with the same punch. It fits perfectly between 270 and 30.06 and can handle every living Animal in Europe with good Balistics an manageable Recoil. The cases of 270 / 06 and 7x64 are the same with different Bulletdiameter. The 7x64 is more versatile than the 270 cause of the variety of Bulletweights available for 284dia is much more than for 277
P.s. it was not used bye the Military Brennecke designed it for the Military not only for Hunting as Sniper Round but it was not adopted

7x64 brenneke sits between the 270 Win and the 30-06
You have the flat trajectory of the 270 Win but the knockdown power of the 30-06
    270 Win 2700 - 2900 ft/lbs
    7x64 Bren 2088-3000 ft/lbs
    30-06 2900-3200 ft/lbs
Having shot this cartridge on large driven wild boar in Croatia I can tell you it’s exactly as I described. The best of both, right in the middle. Even the recoil. Excellent cartridge.
Dropped all boar in one shot and those boar in europe ain’t small !!!
The cartridge was originally developed as a replacement for the German army during ww2 as a newer 8mm with different ballistics to outperform their 8x57 that was standard issue, especially for their snipers. It was to hold flatter & faster at longer ranges. But due to logistics and the fact everyone had rifles already chambered for the 8x57 the Germans never adopted it.
Later, Brenneke would neck down that new design down to 7mm, enter the 7x64 Brenneke which even though was never issued to the military gained massive popularity in Europe, hence why it is Europe’s most favoured cartridge.
It is also popular in Europe because it is legal to use in countries where military issues rounds are illegal to hunt with because it has never been issued to any military !

In a region of Switzerland the minimal caliber permitted is the 10.2 but the majority use the 10.3x60.

Danish listener here... (Jimmy, you know the small awesome country, north of Germany, that used to be vikings 😉)
do a Europe vs US huntingtradition, rifle, cartridge, law comparison. That would be fun!
One of the most obvious differences I see in Europe, is that we use wooden furniture rifles, like Sauer 202 ect, and classic break action shotguns (side by side and over and under).
We don't use a lot of "Black guns" like ARs for hunting.... it isn't well seen upon.
And there is a lot of optic snobbery... Zeiss, Khales, Pecar, Smidt & Bendner scopes being huge over here...

The 8.5x55 Blaser looks like the round that Winchester should have made instead of the .325 WSM or Remington should have made as a short action ultra magnum (SAUM). It’s very similar to a WSM or SAUM case and .338 (8.58mm) rounds sell a lot better than .323 (8.2mm) rounds in the U.S. and Canada. My guess would be that Winchester didn’t want to compete with its existing .338 Winchester Magnum and Remington has had a history of terrible implementation of some really good concepts.

In South Africa you also find the most hunters on the Modest Cartridge size side. Theres also very few animals that won't fall over with a .270 - .308 that is affordable for the average Joe Hunter. Even an Eland will reliably expire on a regular .308win or 30-06.

The advantage of the 7x64 over the 280 right now is ammo cost. Ammo inflation has hit the european calibers a lot less. Picking these calibers that are produced by S&B, PPU, and Norma will save you some money. 280 running about $1.75 or more a round. 7x64 will run less than $1

7x61 Sharpe & Hart Magnum developed by famed shooter, ballistician etc Phil Sharpe and Dick Hart in early 1950's. Based on 300 H&H case. Much closer to 7mag than the 7x64. Capable of 2900 fps with a 175 grain bullet. First chambered commercially by Schultz and Larsen in their bolt guns around 1953. In "normal" times brass and dies still available. I foolishly passed up a set of dies a few years ago. Cases can be fire formed from 300 H&H. You might still be able to find some factory loads, maybe from Norma, but I'm not sure. I have no burning desire to own a 7 Rem Mag but now I'll have to put the 7x61 on my "want it just to have one" list along with 257 Roberts and 9.3x62 Mauser. I've already got both of those in progress. Happy hunting boys and girls!😄

Just back from Hungary stalking fallow deer, taking three over the shooting sticks using my Mannlicher Schönauer carbine in 6,5x54MS. 46cm {18"} barrel. Pre 1923 manufacturing, with a 70s Swarovski Habicht 2,3-9x42 scope. Hemmingway wrote about this rifle and it has near legendary status. I chose it as both components were made just kilometers away from were I am from. Yes, we use a lot more conservative cartridges and our guns are often old, handmade and in comparison very expensive. However, less modular, budget friendly and so it is a little less fun in some ways. Hunting here is an elite sport but also a very old cultural aspect with tons of customs and traditions attached. Hunting licenses take months to pass and trophy fees apply. That's due to history and population density. Also, our game is scarce sometimes and often much smaller than in North America so a 7x57 {with is a military round} or 6,5x68, 6,5x54,.243 etc does it pretty much across the board. Also, our optics are the finest in the world, our game is small and we have lots of traditions against things like shooting bedded game etc so I dare to say we emphasise on precision out to 300 yards and that's where we traditionally put our limit... For the most part.
    Cheers from Austria

It’s not quite to a 7mm RM, but is essentially a .280 Rem equivalent. In fact, the two are extremely similar in dimensions. The sharper shoulder of the 7x64 makes it just barely outperform the .280 in an equivalent barrel length. Both are excellent and date I say some of the best.

I hunt hooved mammals almost exclusively with the 7x64. It is an excellent medium bore chambering that I’ve used on everything from feral hogs to Whitetail to Rocky Mountain elk (wapiti). I chose the 7x64 because I was interested in a 280 class rifle but the German rifles I prefer don’t chamber 280 - they all chamber 7x64 so there’s no need. And I had seen it in action in Europe. I’ve used it for years past and will use it for many years to come.

Brenneke designed it for the Mauser 98, came maybe 10 years before the .270 Win, ballistically equal. Maybe you loose 10% speed vs the 7mm rem mag. but you can get a normal length action for this. It has light weight bullets for roe and long and heavy bullets for moose and red stag and with very high sectional density. so if you want a do it all , it is cheap and perfect. maybe not so good for extrem short barrels like a 308 Win or a 9,3x62 or 8x57.. and the recoil is managble for all hunters... really a great to it all, came in rimless for drilling, double rifle... 7x65r and great for reloading.. , was in preperation for the sniping k98k in ww2, but for logistic reasons came not...

It is more equivalent to your 280 rem and it was intended to be a german (sniper) military cartridge (but never was). Brenneke also designed the hunting bullet for that cartridge (TIG/TUG) which haven't high BC but are long and heavy. Hence the long free-bore and gentle angle of the junction cone.

It should be pointed out that the chamber dimensions of European classic rifles often show a longer cone. This is due to the typical round nose bullets that have often been used.
