Practice practice practice mate. Could help setting up an Ai with IR missiles only to start? They will still try and kill you but won’t have that range to make you panic to get your procedures down and smooth before you go for a more stressful environment?
Great video. Yeah, the Hornet radar is hosed for the time being...keeps dropping locks in Auto and stops sweeping, as you said. It would be great if you could do a video on your "sneaky deeky" style in your PVP videos (using SA page, radar off, evading enemy AWACS, and popping up for the kill). Very impressive.
Also, for your TrackIR, I was having the exact same issue. If there are any light sources behind you, turn the Camera > Light Filter Threshold up to over 200.
I think you can launch quite earlier than that, especially if you loft with a quick full burner 25-30 degrees climb prior to release. The bandit is coming red hot on you so from the time you launch he will reduce the range quite fast. I'm pretty sure you can spare 5 to 15 miles and even if the missile has dropped too much energy, it will force the bad guy into defensive. And when you reverse your cranck you may want to do it by going back and doing a full turn instead of reversing forward. Always try to increase the distance or at least reduce the closure rate after your launch. Time is your allied. You can eventually decide to launch a second Fox3 between your first cranck and the reverse. And don't forget you are fighting in 3 dimensions. You can decide to drop the nose during the first cranck to anticipate the defensive manoeuvers the opponent will do when the missile will go active. It will help your radar to keep the soft lock and you'll lead an eventual enemy missile into thicker air. Or you can pull up to build an energy advantage should the fight go further ...
Great video, really instructive! I'd like to ask, is that a mission file posted somewhere? That would be helpful for the learning, I find I am doing a lot of restarting my mission - if I can just pop in a new adversary, save a bit of time.
Hey blanco, I don’t have the mission file for that one but it is super easy to make one with two aircraft and then just hit left shift + R to restart the mission when you’ve killed the Ai aircraft.
STT is a harder lock to break for the enemy but the trade off is that they get an RWR lock tone that your radar is painting them. If you are trying to be sneaky... TWS is the go, if you dont care about giving yourself away an STT lock is a stronger lock that they will have to break than TWS.
Hey man, your videos are great help! I just wonder if the fact that the radar looses track so often is a bug in the F18 radar modes or just a true modelling of the physics of the instruments. Anyway, thanks for a great video! cheers m8
I’ve watched multiple videos explaining this topic and this by far is the easiest explanation anywhere on RUclips. Bloody yanks over complicating shit as always. I’ll come over to Twitch and see what’s up. Western Aussie time places you in Perth I guess?
Quick question. At 17min in the video you counted down 3,2,1 missile active. Whats prompting you to say that. Watched several times to try and pick up what queued you saying that. And once active I'm assuming we can maneuver against threats and the missile will stay on him?
If you look at the HUD it has a countdown timer on the right hand side under the range and closure. When that gets to zero the missile has gone active, you are good to turn cold and the missile will track the target by itself from that point onwards
So when I slew my tdc, the sweeper does not go with the tdc cursor, rather it stays in place until I tdc depress only then it moves towards the cursor. Is there a way other then SPOT mode to have it sweeper follow the cursor in TWS mode?

Hey great video, but I have some issues where my radar will not lock the target no matter what I do but then decides to lock well within visual range making bvr impossible for me. Do you have any ideas why this may be occurring, thanks
Sounds like a radar elevation issue to me mate, use your SA page to get the bandits altitude and then adjust your radar elevation to suit and the radar should pick him up not long after.
@@TorniQuetHD I will try that. It's a bit weird considering the bandits radar picture consists of a full diamond which I presume means not only can a friend see it, but so can my own radar
