- Whether you're a beginner, returning player, or veteran of Crusader Kings 3, it can always be hard to determine what your first or next start will be. In this video, I highlight Duke Robert of Apulia and arguably my favorite playthrough of CK3. I also believe this is the BEST start for a new player with plenty of growth options all around!

My recommended beginner start is the Duchy of Bohemia in 1066. You start with the entire de jure kingdom of Bohemia under your control, and can declare yourself king very easily. As the only king-tier vassal in the Holy Roman Empire, you have a strong start from which to learn the basics of the game with little external pressure. You can go tall and become one of the wealthiest and most developed regions in Europe with the help of a local silver mine and Czech culture's economic bonuses. You can focus on diplomacy, using alliances and factions to throw your weight around within the HRE, forcing the Emperor to do your bidding or politicking your way onto the throne yourself. Messing around outside the HRE is another fun option; Poland, Hungary, and Austria are juicy targets for both alliance and conquest.
very interesting and useful information, thank you!
Bohemia 1066 is my go-to start after ragequitting to calm myself down, very fun & chill playthrough
Pretty easy though. Not that that’s a bad thing. I just find it hard because I feel like a few wars and your the strongest kingdom in diplomatic range.
I find taking Hungary for your son is more trouble than it is worth. Hungary is a powder keg. Be prepared for endless civil wars in Hungary if you help your son take the throne. Unless you set him up with William’s daughter and William conquers, he will not hold Hungary.
Building tall in Bohemia was my favorite start so far. I had way more gold income and development than any other playthrough.
Haraldr of Vestfold in 867 is my favorite start, and he's honestly worth his own video. You start as Haraldr tanglehair, with the option to become the fairhair when you become King of all Norway (just like the legend). Making Norway is super easy, especially since you can just use the conquer CB conquer your way up the Norwegian coastline. From there you can make thing Scandinavian empire, or whatever you want to do with your playthrough.
If you capture enough to form the Kingdom, you can then build up your diplomacy and the little OPMs will take vassalage.
If you're unmarried you can also marry the only Norwegian character in the 867 start, the woman who he was apparently trying to impress by becoming king of all Norway. Really interesting and unique mechanic, he should have been included in the "great adventurers" bookmark
@@mortache I am pissed Rollo isn't included. I understand its because its kinda sketchy as to who he really is as there are two origin stories of his.
One says his father is Rognvald of Prandheimr while the other says he is from Denmark.
But both sources do agree he was exiled by Harald Finehair as he stole Harald's cattle.
Then 200 yrs later his descendant stole the Kingdom of England from Harald's descendant😂
@@caniblmolstr4503 Hrolfr de Normandie is present in Prandheimr in 867, although as unlanded just like El Cid in later date. Plus Hrolfr is also the name of the heir of that county, which is probably the actual historical character. So there are actually TWO "Rollo"s lol
@@mortache I mentioned both.. The two characters called Hrolf is an ode to the two stories about Hrolf.
In one source - considered more accurate as it was written by Alfred's monks Rollo was an exiled Dane for stealing Harald's cattle and was a cousin to Guthrum the Unlucky.
In the other we get the Gongu Hrolf myth but this was a skaldic poem so not considered accurate.
Though nothing says the heir of Prandheimr was not the Rollo that took Normandy as it could be that Harald confiscated his lands and exiled him. Not the first time Harald did that. The cattle stealing thing could be a raid that Rollo did earlier in his career
I find that Alfred the great is a good tutorial run for new players. Throws them to fire but you are still a powerful lord who has to learn about realm management, partition, title creation, holy wars, raids, and most important of all: the menace that his Haestienn.
Definitely, I learned to play as Alfred
After a good campaing with Alfred, they should go with Haesstein, a powerfull start that demand you to use everything you learned
I learned with harstein lol I conquered Wessex first then Brittany and then formed England lol and with harsteins op mil stats it’s easy to set up heirs although my son only has daughters rn so I need a grandson to not split my kingdom lol and I’m still far off the empire so yeah
Just started playing ck3 on Xbox and your channel has helped me out a lot. Thank you!
My first playthrough was the start as Bjorn Ironside in Uppland. Had some very early growing pains as I struggled to figure things out, but ultimately it turned into an incredible story.
Within two lifetimes I'd conquered all of Sweden and Norway to create the Kingdom of Rognfridr, named after the queen whom I headcanoned had lead the nation to victory in a defensive war when the king was taken captive by the invading Danes. Within another lifetime, I reformed the Asatru faith to place my bloodline as the head of faith and make the faith matriarchal. So then came a long lineage of warrior and/or philosopher queens, who gradually conquered all of Northern Europe and Eastern Europe with our dominion stretching all the from Norway to the Black Sea, forging our kingdom into a great empire which fought off a crusade for Ruthenia.
The playthrough ended with the first man to assume the throne in almost a dozen generations, Emperor Kolbjorn, completely conquering and converting the entirety of the British Isles within a single lifetime. He then fought off a bloody crusade for Ireland, and almost the entirety of Europe was left bankrupted by the war for years afterward. Only as the Empire was still recovering and deeply in debt from the war, a new power was rising dangerously close to our eastern frontier. Temujin was coming.
Kolbjorn, seeing that his empire was in no state to fight a war, determined that this rising power needed to be dealt with severely and as quickly as possible. He invited the khagan all the way to his capital in Sigtuna for a feast, and once the khagan fell drunk and unconscious, Kolbjorn took Temujin into his new wine cellar... and bricked up the exit.
In the following months as Khagan Jochi rose to the throne, Kolbjorn noticed that the mongol realm was still unpleasantly whole. So within just nine months of Temujin's death, Jochi was unexpectedly killed by the bite of a spider late in the night. Finally leaving Uhkuna on the throne, a five-year-old with no siblings... Kolbjorn watched with pride in his handiwork as the mongol empire then completely tore itself apart in a civil war, resulting in small fractured nations that then continued to war with each other...
Kolbjorn then finally then passing away at the age of 93, with a Learning score of 55, the biggest-brain man of his generation.
Then the update for landing military came out, and all the time and money I'd spent reorganizing my army with three cores of varangian veterans was for nothing XD
So all that was back in April, and I'm looking to jump in again.
imma be real you never gotta apologize for talking my guy. love hearing it and you clue me in on some historical things tied into the game or about the game and its really cool.
Starting as Gugé to form Tibet is one of my favourites. Much like Normands - you have a fair share of options and its topped by an unique achievement to work towards.
It's a fairly easy location to play in and a ton of fun :) You start with an option to instantly run a war, you get dynasty trait right off the bat with the second one within months, your dynasty has a presence in the region, so there are easy alliances to make, your courtroom already has 3 good items to use, if you'll wait several months - you'll get a ton of vassalization offers, and so on, and so on... it's a great starter.
Gug
This is my most recent playthrough and had a lot of fun with it! Roger for me became a tyrannical king after a huge civil war after I reinstated the bastard before dying. Eventually I was defeated and imprisoned, escaped and tried to retake the throne but ultimately failed! Most fun I've had so far on the game even though it was cut short! Going to restart this exact campaign using your advice in this video!
Too bad! In reality he was all but tyrannical, surely one of the most enligthened ruler that Italy ever had. Thanks to him Sicily was the first Christian nation of europe to have religious freedom! For me it's the most fun start of the whole game!
Matilda of Tuscany is my favourite beginner start. You already own most of central Italy and have enough troops that you don't need to worry about marrying for alliances - there are a couple of genius character with high stewardship who can really kickstart a tall playthrough. Grab Sardinia early and you can form a kingdom title, while developing Siena allows the founding of a university further down the line. There's also a good chance that one of your successors will be elected to the imperial throne, allowing you to form the Empire of Italia as a personal, hereditary title.
In my most recent play, I married Bohemond de Hauteville and raised a brood of absolute units - who, unfortunately, decided to be a bit Lannistery when it came to keeping it in the family (apart from the daughter I made a nun, she got lover's pox and had half a dozen bastards)
I formed Switzerland and then just stood around and built tall till I had enough troops to take my independence.
You can marry Matilda of Tuscany as Duke Robert of Apulia, then join the HRE.
As maybe a 2nd playthrough, i can recommend playing as abyssinia, or the "han" (chinese) in 867, as they are both feudal rulers right from the start. Additionally, both coptic christianity, as well as zhengyi have the same tenet as catholic that lets you ask for gold from your head of faith.
The only drawback to these starts is that there arent a huge amount of things you can do regarding long-term goals - just the usual stuff, make an empire, strengthen bloodline, etcetera.
Look at Sparty getting all nostalgic over his first streamed CK3 stream campaign and making people rely on his tutorials.
But these are good suggestions and learning inheritance early is a good idea.
Edit:
In defense of the tutorial though, it makes the Irish catholic and seems intended to give players a clear goal (unify Ireland) that’s achievable in just enough time for you to be in a pretty decent spot by the time the first crusade starts.
I don’t think it’s intended as a full campaign.
If you play Duke Robert of Apulia, if you pick dynasty unlock as 30+ marriage acceptance and have the galiant warfare tree. Then you can inprison and execute your wife, that allows you to marry Matilda of Tuscany. She is a strong ally and holds large amount of land to be inherited.
Even in ck2 my most enjoyable playthrough was apulia , i even managed to win a crusade for Egypt and and put my family member on the throne so i had a powerful ally for when i attacked northern Africa can’t agree more it’s a really good starter place
It’s only last Monday that I was hiking and went to a Norman motte and Bailey ruin in Staffordshire called pilsbury castle.
They really did leave there mark in England
like a castle for the doughboy you poke in the tummy? (see pilsbury doughboy)
The conquests in Ireland helped me learn the game alot, it did require 2-3 restarts though, but thats coz i got the game 3 dayes ago and didnt have any idea of the mechanics..
Now im having the Kingdome of Ireland and working towards England..
With a claim to like 80% of England already for a war..
But definitely gonna try the play tru you recommend as it does sound like alot of funn 😊
This has been a good spot to start since ck1. If it's too good, then there are some counts in the area too that are favorite starts for me.
You have inspired me. This is now on the list.
What’s crazy is I have ancestory, being the direct descendent of rollo of Normandy
I do like playing tall in places like holland or bohemia but when playing wide sicily sounds like a very cool idea I havent yet tried
Started as rurikids in 867. Pretty fun.
Dude awesome this was my first play through, just for the vibes !
The Normans are definitely the elite warriors of the middle medieval period. Perfectly placed to fight the pope and hre or unlimited crusades to the south and west. I was looking for inspiration after booting up the game again but I think I’ll just play this campaign again. Cheers
It's so damn good!! Thanks for watching
I like playing as the sardinians in 867 because creating the duchy is almost instant, and also with that mine in Cagliari you easy income.
East Kiilt up in North East Scandinavia is my go to but it is rather difficult. Farthest I made it was 925AD
evil laugh at the mention of a gold mine
Ireland is especially rough now if you are new and have the Viking dlc
My favorite start, especially if you want to easily get the Rags to Riches achievement, is start as the Count of Gottingen in the Duchy of Angria. The first and most important reason is there is a literal gold mine already built there. Secondly, at some point, Angria will try to war HRE, at that point, it's very easy for you to press your claim, as HRE would most likely wipe out Angria's army. My go to strat would be making a custom ruler at age 0 with Blood-father + Diligent trait, you can easily do that, though you will have to manually lose a few prowess stat. Which is okay, since as they say, money wins wars, in this case, hire infinite mercs to fight your wars
Best early start is the little island south of India. You start with super high development. Your religion is Therava, which is reformed I believe. You start as Feudal. You can very easily take Madhuri, which is arguably the best county in the game (six baronies, 3 or 4 of them coastal).
You can mess around with almost any non-Catholic mechanic in the game. Most of the major wars in India happen north of you. It's very easy to be super strong down here.
i agree about Ireland ... thank you great idea will give it try ,, let you know
What aesthetic mods does he use?
I played as his brother Roger(I think) in silicy when I first started was alot of fun plus I love his history he was a boss
From the thumbnail I thought it was a bannerlord vid haha the knight helm with bronze face plate vlandian one haha
The first time i played this game i pickt my own country the netherlands and my city arnhem was in it so it was a easy choise for me i didnt know what i was doing for like 2 weeks and then it all clickt with me i play this game for around 3 months now and i am still learning new things as i play and watch videos
This is a very well put together game in my opinon i can get lost for hours
I got to kingdom of ireland in my first campaign and developed for 60 years before i invaded scotland with overwhelming force but when the tide started to swing i was deposed by my 6 year old daughter then my old character (her father) took away all of my power as regent and then there were uprisings and my cousin took over.
was pretty confused
Italian as well, from lecce, so most of the times I start as count of Lecce and pave my way up to Roman Emperor
A good one in 867 is the guy who starts in Kiev.
Or also in 867 - the fairhaired in Norway.
I hate Kiev because it keeps getting raided.
@@corvus1374 You won't get raided if you're the one doing the raiding *taps head*
@@mortache That's not true. Besides, Khazars have more troops.
@@corvus1374 I was joking. My point was to be on the offensive yourself. Khazars are too big for their own good. Create civil wars, murder etc to weaken them while consolidating yourself
@@corvus1374 more troops... Craven. A true Viking never lets any thing called more troops stop him. Just get stupid OP knights which is quite easy to get as an Asatru and defeat them to form Ruthenia with Kiev.
Then form the Varangian Capital and your are golden
In my Irish play through, the Norwegians some how took over all England in a few year and parts of France. Quite confused how that stuff works.
As far as learning game mechanics goes, I think my favorite start is the Ghaznavid's in Pakistan. There is a lot of eastward expansion potential available to you, a relatively fractitious neighbor who could potentially be a very valuable ally. You have to learn to deal with mechanics like unruly vassals and differing culture and religion far more than you do in Europe, where almost everyone is Catholic and you can use the Pope as a gold crutch.
Despite it's size, it's not a powerhouse like France or Hungary. You have angry vassals, religion and cultural penalties, underdeveloped and under-tech regions, and other reasons to learn about gameplay where something like Apulia might not teach you about - say - the importance of differing religions, cultural groups, or being behind in tech.
count of Dijon in 867 is a really good start you can snowball very quick
Just picked up CK3 after playing several hundred hours of CK2 so I was looking for an interesting first campaign. This sounds like it might be a good one.
I'd agree that Ireland is too slow for most people but there are SO MANY aspects to this game that I can see why they recommended it in CK2.
Salerno is my favorite so far was able to get the roman empire fairly easy while still starting small not to mention you’re right next to rome which has got to be one if not the best citys in the game
How do you deal with the war against Matilda at the start when she presses a claim?
Just concede it to her. Totally forgot about that. I focus on the southern portion
I'm actually thinking of trying to reform Rome as the Norman's, I have tried a number of times as Sardinia because that gold mine is amazing but I just feel like I can't get to the reform Rome decision yet with Sardinia. I always convert to catholic in Ireland, don't like insular either and it's pretty easy to switch to catholic 😉
I think I've watched more of your videos more than I've played the game! So helpful but serious information overload....lol! Not your fault, there's just a ton to the game. I've been trying to piece it all together. Watch a video, start another character and learn that style of gameplay. Your videos are awesome! Thank you!
Hahahaha Thanks so much man and don't worry, we're all doing the same thing :)
I like the Alfred the great start for a more casual experience.
Fighting off the Vikings, expanding Wessex even across the sea into france and forming England is super fun.
The strongest start Ive played so far was Haesteinn. Being able to basically adventure your way to any starting point you wish for is amazing. In my last campaign I simply took hold of Rome, beating the Pope with the starting 3k units from Haesteinn. He also lives for ages. I was nearly at 90 years when he finally died.
The longest Haestinn has lived in my playthrough has been 106
I like Sardinia in 867. Not just the silver mine, but you can capture all of the island and easily form a duchy. Then go after Mallorca and form its duchy, and presto, you can form a kingdom.
Another good start is the Duchy of Manding, down in Africa. They have access to THREE gold mines.
If you don't like to have to get claims, change your character to some odd branch of Christianity (I like Adamism so that everybody is naked), and then you can attack without having to wait for claims.
I started in Ireland and after 100 years had all of Scotland and England.
i started in Italy - Spoleto and Castille i actually got to Empire in Italia but quickly lost it due to kids 💀 in Castille my character stayed Duke til his 50s cant really do much there
I kinda like Ireland. My first two plathrus saw me take over most of Scotland and Subrjar before i got bogged down and screwed up inheritance, thanks to too many kids.
The catholic chieftess of half of island is really good and challenging start
It was a very interesting 1:43
I'm just happy they finally gave my boi Bohemond an uniqie DNA
Just wanna say the Munster start isn’t bad. If you want, you can immediately marry up to four wives (because insular) who may come with claims, have good genes, or be Henry’s niece so he’ll immediately be like “bro, les take England” and you’re all “lol, k. Meet you there in a sec” As you immediately install your courtier Donnell as Vassel of Ailech and Oriel… with time to spare to join in Henry’s domination of England.
Anyway, there’s plenty of action early if you look for it, plenty of money to be made fighting Iceland, Norway, France… even get pulled into Roman squabbles if you marry right. There are options for entering Spain, romancing into England’s court, etc. hell, you can take all of Ireland without fabricating a single claim or marrying into cousin’s families. Took me a while and watching your guides to think of unique angles to attack the problem from, but I’ve united Ireland several times already and had a blast doing it!
I just started CK3 so I did go for Ireland but this looks fun so I Mitch give this a go :)
Yeha man! If you're just getting started it might really help Hahah
@@italianspartacus search up Italian beef and Pepsi 😂
Lothair II is amazing for my intrigue bros. Murder your way to HRE without raising your army
I always thought Bohemond was italian till i played this game.... i felt the same way.
Feels good to be Norman.
Most fun I’ve had is Matilda of Tuscany.
I'd say Harald Tanglehair of Vikin in 867 for a beginner tribal campaign. You start with a young and quick duchy-level character with lots of weak neighbours to expand quicky, a very clear first objective in the creation of the kingdom of Noregr, and you are viking so you are fairly strong and have the option of raiding. From there, you can diverge a lot. Maybe reform asatru and feudalize. Maybe terrorize the British isles and the north of Europe. Grab a piece of the baltic and form the Jomsvikings, or maybe throw your gauntlet in the fight for England. North Sea Empire or Scandinavia are nice long term goals. Hell, you can even skip all that and go Varangian if you want, though I wouldn't recommend that for a first campaign.
I was disappointed that he was not featured start. He got an interesting story
I think Ireland is a good beginning start area for most Paradox games. Well see how that stacks up with Vicky 3.
@ThunderNorse sounds like time to undermine the British and cause Irish independence early.
Ireland sucks in general, very poor duchies with no unique buildings, low development, and threat of viking raids. Oh, also the Irish culture sucks too, no tradition that boost starting military. You'd be better off playing as English culture in Ireland since at least then you get Longbowmen.
There is some genuine risk from the Byzantine Empire. I played as Sicily and for a time everything was going great, at my peak I controlled three Kingdom titles and had alliances with the Holy Roman Empire. Then the Byzantines stabilized and turned their attention to me, I was able to beat them back three times before my alliances ended and was unable to form a new one with the HRE and the Byzantines came for me again. I was forced out of Sicily and Croatia and left with Zaporizhia, I only got Sicily back when I decided to become the Byzantine's vessel, never did get Croatia back though.
Where's best to start as a custom character?
Isle of Mon as an Op viking in 867. Elevate kingdom of Mann and the isles is a broken decision.
Custom Viking Gigachad painting the map and changing history that’s the way to go
Seljuk is not a Persian Empire just wanted to correct that:)
Viennois campaign is good. You can make the kingdom of burgundy in just not much time, and no one really tries to attack you.
Best start in warhammer 3 is Nurgle. You get to rule play as a Blizzard Exec.
Another fantastic start for me is Sardinia, convert catholic and then join the HRE and see if you can become the emperor and control thr HRE, or try to reestablish rome..that's kind of fun.
I really like the 867 start as Ashot of the Armenian Principalities. You can easily get independence from the Abbasids and then become a Byzantine vassal. Then slowly build your strength and take more territory. After taking enough territory you can assert your independence and revive Greater Armenia. Then go on to Mend the Schism and Reunite Rome. By the end, you are based Armenian Apostolic Rome.
Can you do a video on creating your own character?
?
Just picked up CK3, and I did learn CK2 in Ireland, but my 2nd play through was in Galicia in the Iberian peninsula, much easier, and I created the empire of Hispanola after ravaging the entire peninsula, some of france and a lot of North Africa.....
Did a ArchDuchy of Austria run. Started as Babenburgs in 1066 and married my oldest son in a matrilineal marriage to the Hapsburgs daughter.
You make good amount of money and you have a claim on all of Steyermark.
Get a easy marriage to Bohemia and Hungary and you bascially get two duchies easily. Then get let your bishop fabricate on duchy capitals to expand into Carinthia Tyrol Krain and so fourth. Work to get crown authority 4 so you can set your player heir that way you dont get end game in once those Hapsburg kids come to the throne. If your playing Ironman.
If you dont I would just start as babenburg, conqueror steyermark and then declare independence war on HRE Emperor. Surrender, switch to emperor revoke the duchy titles and then grant them to Otto von Hapsburg.
You never need to do collect taxes just increase dev in Wien and you basically will make so much money and do learning and stewardship and you are basically unstoppable . Also Tryol gets a silver mine and Bohemia has a mine as well and you just roll is cash more than you know what to do with.
Also you get primogeniture really early once you form the archduchy title. Also you can remove duchies you take over from the HRE like Tyrol and Salzburg so you wont get Dejure wars if you go independent of the emperor. I recommend just getting the hook on the emperor rather than becoming emperor.
If you know nothing about history would you get a lot out of this game? I've heard cool things about it but I'm worried my lack of knowledge would make it a bit of a wall to get into.
History doesn't mean much in this game. You make your own history.
It’s more about learning the game mechanics than anything
Hmm yes lore of ck3 momentum 100
You wrote Robert Guiscard as Roger 😝
Though I agree with you 100% that Duke Robert of Apulia is the best ck3 start.
He is the OG crusader King ffs. And Bohemond was a crusader king. Soo...
Though i think the devs intended Bohemond to be disinherited so that he can be a beneficiary for any crusade. Maybe i am just speculating anyways
@Tim Donets but I have only won crusades with Bohemond as the leader never with Roger. And Robert almost always dies before 1096
You lied to me I’ve been in nonstop war an my entire kingdom is about to be conquered I’m in 8 wars right now and all of them have Allie’s this is probably one of the worst starts ever
Flood of console players will be returning in November, only took most of the year to get an inkling of what we have watched others enjoy all year.
Personally i found 1066 Leon as a rewllt fun campaign jjst murdering everyone
867 Beta Israel run; You really can only start as Gideon dynasty.
I started humbly in Egypt and turned all of Africa and Arabia into a Coptic Empire.
This guy sounds like the Khan Academy dude
Slay
I literarly never start in 1066, always in 867 and always as a custom ruler. So this video was strangely irrelevant to me.
Hell yeah, I loved forming the Normans in ck2. It was hard asf, but also super fun. Normans are CHADS
i tried to get my brother into ck3 but he started out in Munster and all the claiming and stuff made it really boring. the way i got into the game (about 6 months ago) was through playing multiple campaigns as Haestien. he is still my go to pick for a character if i just want to play around
This isn't CK2. RUclips search sucks. WTF!
