Nice breakdown of the challenges in playing theremin. On some level I find it's like a kind of yoga / tai chi in how it's a practice to find inner and outer balance, and the theremin is on some level a auditory bio-feedback or neuro-feedback device of stilling the body and mind. Another theremin playing friend formulated it like 'the theremin is a very sensitive mood-detector'. Trying to use the voice and the theremin simultaneously I find even more challenging, but is something I try to incorporate into practicing.
I have a Theremin I built from a kit I bought from my local Jaycar Electronics store a few years ago, it was their Deluxe Theremin kit, originally designed by one of Australia's electronics magazines, Silicon Chip, it's design included a special coil of wire located inline with the pitch-antenna, called a linearizing coil, I found that after some careful adjustments, I could get quite a few octaves of pitch control with bass notes easily obtainable while my right hand was 4 meters away from the pitch antenna.
You're absolutely extraordinary. Just like the oe instrument you introduce us to and teach us how to sing. After seeing the first tutorial, I decided to buy one. I've noticed that the price is affordable. Thank you so much with Gratitude. God bless you for your effort
You said it can cover 6 octaves which is interesting because theremin always seems to being rather high pitched. I'd be curious to hear theramin playing a bassy role.
The pole antenna is a very narrow "sensor" - a slight deviation to the left or right changes pitch significantly. It is like walking a tightrope. The plate antenna is a wide "sensor" - slight deviation to the left or right does not change the pitch significantly. It is like walking on a sidewalk. As for swaying, I've suggested playing while seated for accurate play for at least 15 years. You play well. The Claravox is easier to play than the etherwave.
I’m pretty good at hitting the correct pitch using the theramin mode touch strip of my hydrasynth, so at least that’s one ingredient that could indicate a bit of aptitude for the real deal. I’d love to try one some day, but I’m hesitant to spend money on another instrument that could end up collecting dust in the corner. Tried learning guitar at 40+ years old and it was very slow progress, probably something I should have started 20+ years ago. I feel like Theramin is another one of those “if you’re not 100% dedicated to it, you probably won’t get far” .. I’m a bit too easily distracted by my comfort zone instruments. (synths, pianos)
It's not a universal recipe. Each evolves at his own pace. Depending on your musical knowledge. The whole secret lies in the daily or regular discipline. You can stay as little as you can but constantly, and the results will certainly appear
but what was the mod tho? you never told us. I have been playing for years on the same model as you, and I ordered the newer model, but moog sent me a dud/the weather damaged it -it arrived in weather in the negative numbers. Luckily I got insurance, and given my skill I was able to work with the CV controls and have it "passable," for a recording I was doing, but it just didn't work normally. Insurance wouldn't replace it cause it was still under manufacturers' warranty. Moog wouldn't cover it because I was missing a piece of cardboard included in the packaging. (yes. this is a thing.) So I will try again with insurance later this year, but in the mean time, where did you get the linearity mod from? I feel I know, but I just forget atm. Thanks! Is it Thierry's?
Hey! Great video's! Can you tell me about where you plug the sound in? Is it a Guitar amplifier? Or what do you use? My Moog Etherwave Theremin sounds not anything like the sound your's makes! Also, Where/what do you plug into the holes underneath? Thank you in advance
It is f***in hard. xD I would get the ESPE01 module for mine but I have no idea how to solder and don't want to mess anything up. That's okay. Just gotta put the time in to learn, right?
I looked and one place said out of stock. The new etherwaves have upgraded so as not to need the ESPE01. The claravox is a far better and easier instrument. I have two of them..
Why do you use expletives and then sort of bleep them? Everyone knows what you are saying, and you know they do. You are basically saying the expletives anyway. Either own your method of saying things, or use different words.

I know nothing about the theremin and now I want to impulse buy one so I can cry over how hard it is to play. You’re incredible!
I'm trying so hard to learn... your videos give me more insight into playing the Theremin.. thank you so much & please keep them coming.
This instrument sounds good the melancholics out there

Awesome! I'm just starting with the theramin and you explain stuff so well, thank you!
Very cool and clearly explained! 👌love your plants!! 🌿
Very nice presentation!
Never heard of this before. Dean Koontz referred to it in book "The Taking". Wanted to see what he meant. Interesting.
So how do I tune it?
Awesome video!

Like learning to drive a car, or ride a bike, learning to play a Theremin will take some practicing-time.

I use the theremin to look for ghosts in my paranormal investigations
This looks like a fantastic instrument but i am not sure which one to get. I have come across a few on amazon but is there a good brand to buy?
Not the only one you play without touching. Laser harp is the second one.
So like what effect do you get by playing two theremins reversed back to back?
Thanks for the fyi!!❤
so cool!
for how many years did you pay to achieve your level ? and how much time does it take to be a decent player ? i love your theremin videos

What a bummer! Hope insurance comes through. Yes, it’s Thierry’s mod 🎉

Find a good synth shop, somebody who's going to be careful with the installation and it's pretty easy.
