Eddie Van Halen mentioned in several interviews that one of his music goals was to duplicate Ronnie's monster guitar tone. He came close, and eventually (as we all know) hired Ronnie's first lead singer (Sammy Hagar) as a bonus.

This song CRANKS! Ronnie was a master at Power rhythm guitar!. No other guitarist to date has come close to duplicating the sound and feel Montrose executes in this clip. You can't force power strokes like this, one is born with the ability! Ronnie was backbone, he was the substance, and he felt the chops deep inside his soul. What a great guitar player.

I am an old guy with some decent concert memories.First half of 1974 in Savanah,GA.Spooky Tooth & Humble Pie with some opening act called Montrose.By the time RM dropped his gitfiddle at the end of Jailhouse Rock & filed off stage(That thing was still raising allhell even Once they"d gone) it felt like they"d brought the roof down!!! That crowd still screamed for them even after The Pie came on.A fantastic experience. The jams,my boys,& the biggest revolving reflective disco ball I have ever seen!!!!

But I had a ticket to see Van Halen open for Black Sabbath Halloween of '78, last tour with Ozzy and last tour of Van Halen as an opening band, but we found a couple of bales of pot in the Gulf, and my dad found it and turned me in to the cops, so I missed that show too.

Then the next year, 1973 the Montrose album was released pioneering American Power Rock. The fan base was big in the US and Europe. Went to numerous concerts with Montrose as the headliner and Journey as one of the opening bands. The unimaginable thing was the tickets were $5.00 and there were always three major bands.
