Relief wood carving a calla lily flower using traditional gouges and a Dremel for detail work! The hand carved flower is carved out of white pine and took me approximately 10 hours to complete.

Great tip about a first coat of Natural Stain followed by stain of choice. Taming down those all too often crazy color streaks due to different grains (early and late wood annual rings etc) in wood is a critical skill! …..unless you like contrasting tiger stripes on all your pieces…….🐅🐅🐅

A coat of de waxed shellac before staining will help keep the color more uniform. Some cut it with denatured alcohol to get a thinner coat (like a wiping varnish.)
Gel stain allows more control over how much color and where, like along borders and deeper areas, just wipe off what you don’t want to keep, then spray shellac to fix the stain.

That sounds like a good way to finish a project. I'll have to experiment with gel stain, I've never used it before so I'd be curious to know how well it works.

Awesome job! Your finishing technique turned out great as well. You can try using Zinsser “Seal Coat” Shellac cut 50% with Denatured Alcohol for your primer coat before staining on that soft wood to make it more uniform if that’s your goal. It dries very fast, can be over coated in 30 minutes, and works great for evening out the stain penetration. I use this method for staining my soft fine furniture work to get a more consistent finish. Try on some test pieces first. Keep up the great work, and I’m looking forward to more of your instructional videos.

Thanks! I assume you mean vertical stop cuts? That is one way to do it too. I guess I prefer the v-tool first because you don't have to use as much force and its far less prone to breaking off pieces in sensitive areas. The vertical stop cuts are great though because you save a step by skipping the v-cut pass.

@@ChiseledOutdoorsCC Yeah I was working on two legs with identical patterns on each, and one I began with the v-tool, the other with stop cuts, and the stop cut leg has super glue surgery all over it from breaking off leaves. Thanks dude
