Amazing how well Dishy works just laying flat without azimuth and elevation adjustments. I am looking forward to hearing progress reports as time marches on. Hopefully, the folks back at Starlink are taking notes on your unusual installation to improve future Starlink antennas for mobile and marine use. Starlink is clearly a major game changer for high speed Internet connection for the marine cruising community. Well done Sean, I'm impressed with your ingenuity. No wonder Elizabeth keeps you around ;)
Yeah I mean since they don’t have lnb’s they have thousands of little circuits that can be used to focus. But I I didn’t know it did it dynamically but I guess it would have to, sats move fast and my dish doesn’t track with its motor, it just gets it into a general position for best reception
It would not there would be lots of brown outs. So for gaming would be unbearable. For downloads brownouts don't matter as much if you don't mind a few lost packages. I am sure if everyone does this this would stress their system enough to where these mods will be blocked by software. Basically the constellation now has to do the math to find which one will communicate with you then send your packets there. They would rather you face a predesignated target consistently.
Glad it works for you. I was not expecting it would. I assumed they put so much effort into designing it so that it can point in just the right direction that without it, the usability would have greatly suffered, apparently not.
The buggy whip was in vogue for centuries and today the computer is old news before you get done bringing it online. You guys have the right stuff to keep abreast of all the changes.
So the "dish" is a phased array, and can compensate without gimbals and still produce cable modem speed, awesome. The frequencies of search radar are so much lower than satellite freqs, should be no problem... Unless there is an IF strip in Starlink, but that is old school audio stuff. Bravo Zulu on a great install, and very interesting content!
i have the original "dishy" on my 63' Hatteras. I went simple and just mounted pole mount for a traditional parabolic antenna. This left the movement servos still in place on the dish antenna. At anchor, it does not move much as the constellation of Statellites moving overhead pretty much keeps the dish acting like it's fixed on a geostationary target, but it does subtlety move. The movement is not robust enough to keep up when the boat cruising... but I love ❤ it!

Really enjoyed this episode. I was thinking and hoping to install Starlink on my new boat in the future. So this episode was extremely interesting to me. By the time I'm installing I'm sure they will have full mobility worked out. Thanks again ..p
Good info for anyone else who would like to try this system on their boat ie. my brother. The savings are going to add up over time which is going to encourage more people to do the same thing. Having the inter net go with you wherever you are is advantageous when traveling about.
One thing to look forward to that’s not mentioned, is base stations are currently required by each satellite as mentioned. StarLink 2 satellites have laser communication so they just have to be able to see another StarLink satellite with base station access. So the Infrastructure roll out doesn’t need base stations and therefore permission of other countries.
For your cellular solution you should look at a Pepwave Cellular router with the external antenna. With our RV the service range and signal improved significantly over a hotspot. Mostly because of the external antenna. Also the use of multiple SIM cards from various providers was a big bonus.
It looks perfect...very nice and now you have the internet in the middle of the ocean. 😁 Soon you will get coverage anywhere you go. I can't wait for Starlink to launch in South Africa.
Thanks for sharing this. I think the interesting concept is that a boat is in motion potentially all of the time, even when not moving it can still roll and pitch. The issue with that is your transmission beam can fall off of the bird, and potentially hit another satellite (that’s why the FCC is involved). Normally this is prevented with a transmit inhibit that locks out transmission when the receive lock is lost. I’m sure you have seen that Starlinkbis now available for yachts, $5000/mo and $10,000 for equipment. This includes two Starlink units, but I don’t think we know yet how they are different from normal units.
Love what you did with that install, I think the only thing it needs is a big sticker that says 'no step' I could easily see someone stepping on it and damaging it. I hope they pick up the form factor you have created here so I can run it on my boat.
It is amazing there is no insulation in the top of the boat cabin. Doesn’t that make it colder in your present climate. When you come south you will really feel the heat. It is shocking they charged $56 a mega not giga byte. Enjoyed the video. Now you can post more often.
At equatorial latitudes the phased array will not be able to steer the beam’s line of sight to the Starlink constellation located over the northern latitudes. You likely won’t experience this problem until venturing south toward Mexico.
Hey, you might have covered this in your other video but how does it track the satellites if you have it bolted down? The one on my house moves around finding the best signal.
The system picks the best satellite it can find within its limited field and throughput is whatever it can get rather than steering to an "optimal" satellite. Throughput would probably be better and more consistent it the steering was intact. I believe the satellite selection criteria includes utilization of the satellites in view so being able to steer would allow the system to select a less congested satellite closer to the horizon for better throughput.

I was leaning towards Carbon AGM Bstteries, but have found Reasonable priced Marine 12v 206AH lifepo4 of excellent quality without Heaters, by SOK - about 1100 euros each over here, with heaters over 1300 euros each. Seems heaters can be bad news, and a bit of insulation around them should remove any need. I intend being mostly in warm/hot places anyway. Next task for me, is to find a decent Marine grade Wind Generator with Decent Output, that's not too noisy. Could be a challenge. Best Wishes to you both, plus pats for the dogs. Bob. 👍🙂
We’ll done on the install and thank you for sharing the process and your first impressions. Installation question - did you connect the Starlink signal to you boats’ network with a Cat 5 connection or did you just use Starlink’s wireless router to provide a signal throughout the boat? Thanks! Brian
Yep, as far as warranty’s go… its pretty much the same. How many times have I found that out. Cheers from Thailand. I still miss Sandy… yours and mine. There is nothing like a Lab’s tail for clearing dishes off a table! Haha. But what a willing swimming partner.
Could be a gamechanger in comms offshore! It will be interesting to see what angle of pitch and roll are tollerable, Pity it is restricted to anchorage/quayside usage. You're not up there often - consider putting hazard tape across the top of it. Wouldn't want to stand on it! In the North Sea, there is a 4G system operated by Tampnet, using repeater stations on offshore installations - but NOTHING like that speed! Also the cost is rather prohibitive for private use. A very useful video which will be useful for so many, I think. Thanks!
While not officially aligned with Starlink (one day maybe?), through other work we do I've installed 11 of these dishes to date for private residences (in New Zealand). While the cost is certainly up there people will pay for fast, reliable internet. If there are limited choices, and in NZ outside of urban areas your choices get pretty limited pretty fast, Starlink is a good option. The upfront cost is certainly high, but ongoing it's not horrendous, currently a little less than double the average monthly rate for a fibre connection. In my area we have a company which provides a pretty good wireless service too, which I think limits the uptake of Starlink a bit.
Remember these dishes do not have focusing lnbs. You only have to motor the dish into kind of position then the thousands of units inside the dish can’t get directed so it can work within a tolerance. This is why they have it pointing straight up
Elizabeth said they don't recommend installing Starlink as they did due to voiding the warranty and locking themselves into their own installation method. Personally, I don't find the appearance of the dish objectionable, especially with the big rotating radar antenna a few feet away. Since the system can't be utilized underway and has to be shut off for fear of being sent to pergatory, I would have rigged a quick release mechanism for the downtube. The dish could be stowed while in transit to prevent wind damage and keep its circuitry out of the path of the radar signal. I doubt Starlink has qualified or would approve of mounting their dish a few feet away from an active radar antenna! Stowing would preserve the warranty and avoid any future problems with Starlink objecting to the installation method. It will be very interesting when they call Starlink technical support the first time and after querying the device the tech says "Well there's your problem, the steering motors aren't working!"... 🤔 Others such as myself may have a different perspective but in the end, they did what they felt was best for them. Keep up the great videos and above all STAY SAFE? ⛴️❤️😁
Nice fabrication and install. Might of wanted to consider using a 1/4-1/2" spacer on the bolts to keep the dish raised off the pilot house roof just a tad. This would of allowed water to flow freely under the dish, minimized the need/use of excess sealant and possible leak areas as well as you could of easily tapered/curved the spacers to the arch of the roof to lay flat as well. In installations like this using a sealant on the deck grid (diamond patterns) the seal you created is prone to failing possibly. With a voided warranty I would aim to minimum these potential issues by the raised unit. I hope that makes sense... Been a year so hopefully it is working fine and staying dry inside.
That ceiling was easy to access. What type of material is the ceiling made of? Always watch your videos. Need to do the panama canal and come up the east coast. Would love to see your trip.

Interesting that you've eliminated the automated slewing of the receiver plate for the Starlink and are getting adequate performance. We're still looking for utility out in the Bahamas, and Starlink's not ready for prime time out there.
That's amazing. You are very brave to cut that $700 thing apart. I don't understand how you can make it work flat like that, I thought it needed to be able to point at satellites. That is exactly the low profile kind of setup I want to do but I'm not sure I have your courage. I guess I better check. Thanks for that information though and good luck to you.
As the network gets expanded, it is more and more sats above you. Currently there are at least twice the minimum number, and it will only get better. The antenna consists of many small antennas who are electronicslly steerable within approx 100 degrees range.
With the threat of them turning off your service if you use it "while in motion" you might want to be cautious while using it at anchor. What if they interpret your swinging on the hook to being "in motion"? Starlink is maturing rapidly, just not sure they're quite ready.
Nothing like polluting our skies with thousands of satellites. They are talking of wanting upwards of 10000 not to mention that blue origin is also getting into the same game and will be aiming for just as many. Sometimes these things are not worth it.
@@corail53 It's worth it to those with no other means to get decent internet or even phone service, and that isn't limited to boaters and full time RV users.
@@corail53 ... you're typing this complaint on a computer, connected via the limited radio spectrum to a router that sends its signals through scars carved through the earth to a massive datacenter packed with storage systems built using precious mined elements. All of this uses a huge amount of electricity, probably generated by burning fossil fuels. A little perspective.
@@corail53 Blue origin hasn't even finished a rocket that can go to orbit so you really think they are prioritizing their satellite internet service right now? They are still 4 years out MINIMUM from launching their own consumer satellite service. The only competitor to starlink is oneweb, but they are now forced to use SpaceX as their launcher because of the war, so they are at least 2 years behind. Stop complaining old man they are designed to not pollute the sky, and the satellites are only about the size of a kitchen table.
its GPS related and tied to a cell of thousand plus miles rocking at anchor is nothing...... also the FCC doesnt enforce their current licensed bands they sure as hell arent going to be out chasing you in a boat lol.
Is there a risk to the RF transmission energy from Fishy? I know there is for systems that use geostationary birds with an obvious need for greater transmission power. My point is - would it be smarter to mount it higher so you cannot get between it and the open sky for health/safety concerns?
I get 3 mbps upload and 15 mbps download at my house lol... in the country you really don't get good options for internet. I have paid the deposit 2 years ago for service at my house and supposedly it's suppose to come in my area by 2023 which was mid 2021 at first. I'm impatient but I know it be worth the wait once I actually get it..
There's a difference in StarLink's new "Portability / RV" service and "in-motion". StarLink right now just supports the "portability" as the concept of driving your RV to a new location, and setting up the external dish antenna... but NOT using the antenna in an "in-motion" type setup. While it will technically function, they'll void your warranty because Starlink currently does not intend for the existing dish to be used safely in any "in-motion" type deployment.
It's the same systems as for residential. The "RV" portion is just an added service cost that will now allow you to use the service in one location, pack up and drive to a new location, and set the antenna back up.
@@5thGenNativeTexan well RV are moving on ground, boats are moving on sea, not very different from a satellite perspective. Of course the boat rolls while the RV don't
@@claudiof.barbano5530 I was responding to the person above who said they "saw that Starlink has a set up for RV's". My response was that Starlink has not released new "RV" equipment, rather it is just a option you can add to your account that allows you to use your standard Starlink system in different locations, such as moving from RV campground to RV campground. In other words, the "RV" option on your Starlink account is still intended to be used as a fixed (non-moving) setup wherever you go.
As an RVer, very interested in your results. Thanks for the two videos sharing your experiment with this system. Maybe Elon's team will come up with an official boat & RV roof mount someday... Please keep us posted with updates over time. Best...

Lekker man lekker 🇿🇦
Interesting project! Do you get any RF interference from your other electrical systems like radar and VHF?
Nice work on your installation!
Do you have any latency problems, especially using VPN’s, databases etc.
i didn't know about the in motion thingy with starlink. i guess it's a good thing i wasn't going to get it until i finally get a boat.
It is not really meant for boats, it was built for rural areas that don't have adequate internet infrastructure.
Others such as myself may have a different perspective but in the end, they did what they felt was best for them.
Mermaid Monster was not a fan ! They said it did not work more than 10 miles off shore.
Shawn, you're awesome! (And a lot ballsier than I).
Now he rocks. Great video !
Yep I was thinking 3m 5200 it’s rather solid for silicone type sealant if it has had time to set.
You two are awesome. The risk is worth it.
That ceiling was easy to access. What type of material is the ceiling made of? Always watch your videos. Need to do the panama canal and come up the east coast. Would love to see your trip.
Ceiling is vinyl wrapped plywood.
great video, thank's for sharing.
How's the performance and reliability in a rolly anchorage?
Good video 😀 I'm in rving and sailing ⛵️ it has been real big on rv side it's there new toy work's these people are all over the country and no one has mounted it on there roof you guys are the only one I heard of that had cut up the star link case well hope it go well 👍 😉
I just got mine and now I’m wondering if I should have ordered the RV package for my boat. Is that what you guys did? Sorry if you mentioned that and I missed it.
Enjoyed the video!
Interesting that you've eliminated the automated slewing of the receiver plate for the Starlink and are getting adequate performance. We're still looking for utility out in the Bahamas, and Starlink's not ready for prime time out there.
Works in FL im betting it would work fine for you. I would find a Dish Network Mobile dome and modify it before I disabled the tracking like they did
I'm using mine in the Bahamas right now. Works fine.
@@bsm117532 FANTASTICACIOUS! Have you tried it while under way or just when anchored/docked?
I think you should rename Fishy to Splatter. Satellite Platter. (flat dish)
Those ceiling panels deserve some insulation
I'm glad I saw those. Looks like plywood covered with vinyl, attached to the ceiling with velcro. I think I'll make some for my basement ceiling now.
Does it work on really cloudy days?
Haha yes, that’s most days where we live!
Check out Mermaid Monster. Just did a star link episode from Grenada.
Thank God for capitalism. This Starlink technology looks amazing. Well done guys. Enjoy.
Exactly
@@petekdemircioglu yes 🤍🤍✝️🕊
Could you please give directions to cut the starlink 2 panel apart?
??What good is it if only can use at ANCHOR ⚓ ⚓?? I would wait unlit I anchor and use the phone hot spots
Is there a risk to the RF transmission energy from Fishy? I know there is for systems that use geostationary birds with an obvious need for greater transmission power. My point is - would it be smarter to mount it higher so you cannot get between it and the open sky for health/safety concerns?
What’s the name of the song at the 3:12 mark? Who does it? Catchy tune
I hope service continues to improve.
Star Link has announced that it is going mobile for RVs so it should be ok for your boat as how would they know what it was on
There's a difference in StarLink's new "Portability / RV" service and "in-motion".
I saw that Starlink has a set up for RV's now
It's the same systems as for residential.
Best...
We use it with our 42 ft 5th wheel and love it we bought the pole mount and it allows us to raise up off the ladder in case of obstructions or in a tripod
