We have a 2.5 yr old David Austen - St Swithin- climbing rose that we are training to grow horizontally on an angular wood trellis against the house. It has reached the 3rd level of back & forth caning. We cut it hack hard to just the main stem and remove all of the shoots/canes growing from the base. You have left a number of side shoots which I would have removed as there is very energetic growth along the entire main stem.

Love the trellis! On the Clematis, try Brushwood Nursery. I learned about them from Jenny at Gardening with Creekside. I ordered 2 last year. They did great from the start and are sprouting growth already (5b/6a). I bought type 3.
I have a 3 year old David Austin climbing rose on an arbor and fence. After watching many videos I felt confident enough to give it an aggressive trim. I had good vertical growth but I attached horizontal canes out onto the fence, I so excited to see it this season. I excited to see yours fill in too!
It's going to be beautiful! And, omg, this has been so helpful, too - this is my first year of pruning/growing my ornamental plants & flowers (im used to growing just veggies!😅). Im a zone 4b/5a and just pruned my hydrangeas and have 2 generous garderner roses that im going to start their climbing process as well. Been loving these tutorials. I will say for all the cold zones, especially, planting roses DEEP is important, im so glad you mentioned that. My mother in law is colder than i am in northern MN, and she is growing zone 6 and 7 roses! She's been helping me too, but it really is how you plant and offer that extra winter protection 😊
I've got a Claire Austin climber and two Princess Alexandra of Kent shrubs coming in May, so this video is going on my repeat watch list. I have to admit, I was in the 'never again with the roses' camp because I managed to somehow have three in a row that only bloomed once before eventually succumbing to disease(I believe that was a "It's not me, it's you" situation😂)but the two of you have inspired me to give David Austin roses a try. Thank you for producing these informative and entertaining videos every week.
I think Etoile Violette clematis would look great with your rose. Lots of small purple flowers. Bloomed all summer prolifically in my zone 5a. I have it growing up a Yankee Blue Chamaecyparis. To die for!!

Apologies as I may have already asked this, but have you guys tried Heirloom Roses? They are family owned and sell INCREDIBLE and a huge selection of roses. My two roses from them have always been healthy and fantastic.
I suggest clematis Etoile Violette. Bred in 1885 in France so it has a track record. It's a Viticella group. Small-flowered summer. I cut mine down to few inches above the ground every spring and it growers to at least 8'. Very floriferous. The only thing is it likely will not bloom at the same time as the rose.
Great job wrestling that thorny beauty Christopher!!!! 😅 Not easy I know. It's exhausting. Just a reminder to disinfect your pruners in between cuts..Even within the same rose bush. Disease can be passed throughout the same rose from one cane to the next. I just use a can of Lysol. So easy. Thanks guys!!! ❤️ 😊🌼🌻🌼🌻
Check out Clematis 'Arabella'. It doesn't twine -smallish flowers and an extremely long bloom period . Also blue -ish. Mine goes into Nov (zone 9) even though Clems don't care for our bone dry summers . First time I saw it was many years ago at the private garden of a Clematis collector called The Climbery in Livingston NY. I don't know if it still exists -worth a visit if it does. I've never seen so many Clems in one garden ! Right up there with the Rogerson near PDX.

Do you have a video how you planted it? Do they share the same trellis? Hope you don’t mind me asking. Can’t wait to see the combo next year.
@@claudia_ese8788 Yes that's the one! I don't think we filmed the planting of any of our clematis now that I think of it. I honestly placed it right under the back edge of the same trellis. I didn't really do anything special, just tucked it in!
Morning neighbors. I dont know how you guys do it. I WFH but the days Im busy the weather is nice and days Im not, the weather is bad. Like today waking up to snow in April. I still have about 20 trees limbs that are like 10+ feet long to still remove from our last snow-ice we had. Before I can do any other work that needs to be done. At least I got my fertilizer in.
Why did you plant your rose so deep? You never said. I watched the DA videos and they didn't suggest this. Maybe just 2 inches below the graft union. Looking forward to an update this summer.

To get the spiral look I chose 7 main canes...it may end up too much but it will be fun to see the amount of flowers this season

I have Teasing Georgia also and I let it grow as a large shrub. I love the trellis! You gave me an idea to do that

We did find one we like a lot...Superba! We didn't see a ton of blooms but next season it is going to be amazing

I thought about that actually, but to be honest we have quite a lot of bare root roses currently in our garage so we certainly won't need any more!

It's mostly for winter protection, but it helps with rocking in the wind too
