    Dan Grieves spoke about this. I dont think it has to do with "increasing the surface the ball glides on", but maximizing "groove bite" by being more square at impact.
    Attacking the ball with a square face = the ball slides up the club face vertically to maximize "groove bite" on the ball
    Attacking the ball with an open face = the ball slides up the club face at an angle. The grooves cant effectively bite into the ball at an angle.

    • @ahastar1141
      @ahastar1141 2 месяца назад +1

      Wouldn’t the open face be used in this case to protect against digging given he is adding wrist hinge and speed to a shot from a tight lie? While it doesn’t add spin, preventing the leading edge from digging and using a little extra bounce to maximize ball to groove contact would make sense

    • @grandmasterb7398
      @grandmasterb7398 2 месяца назад +3

      @@ahastar1141 I agree with you about an open face to expose bounce to avoid digging.
      I think an open face adds spin, but has less bite vs square at impact. I make up for it by hitting with speed and more loft.
      It seems possible to open the face and still be square at impact, but nothing I can pull off. An open stance + open face has a super weird club path to me.

    • @spencerbaker5407
      @spencerbaker5407 2 месяца назад +1

      The steeper aoa combined with a more open club face produces more spin in the right conditions. A Brand new wedge and ball makes a huge difference too. Sharp grooves will always grab the ball, the only time it’s gonna “slide” up the face is in the longer rough or from lots of water on the face

    • @tobe.moemeka
      @tobe.moemeka 2 месяца назад

      Also when you swing with your wrists you’re apply more down force and less force accross the ball so more spin les distance

    • @brandonoliver2976
      @brandonoliver2976 2 месяца назад +2

      Yes you have to play a good ball no matter the brand and compress the ball almost in that distance. In reality a steep attack and pure contact will almost always produce this.

    Rory explained it in a video. The trick is to keep the face open at impact and during the follow through without it closing or becoming square. If your hands turn over like in a regular swing, you won't be able to impart the spin necessary to stop the ball within two bounces. Rory also sets up a bit open compared to square to target.

  • @jeffreyyoungblood7438
    @jeffreyyoungblood7438 Месяц назад

    The reason the steep angle helps is it means there is less grass and debris between the club face and the ball, (as opposed to sweeping it acrose the grass first) increasing friction since the club(and its grooves) are contacting the ball directly.
    Also hitting the club face as square as possible increases this effect as it's hitting more grooves.

      I've been trying to figure out Wesley's move for a while now. It's definitely steep but very. Does he break it down in any videos? It's pretty unique. You think he decels?
      His hands are obviously magic. I think he takes that long arm swing, back and through, but accels a lot with his hands/wrists right through impact, almost like a late cast or bunker shot.. It's pretty hard to spin it, no matter what you're doing if you're actually decelerating the clubhead.

    Notice how rory didn't take a divot. He perfectly clipped the ball of the turf, maximizing speed through and at impact as well the surface tension created between the club gave and the ball. You can't create that much tension with a swing motion. It is all at impact and cleanly picking it off the turf. Rory had a specific dimple and groove he was trying to have come together at impact.

      @@loduca16 wrong. It’s creates a steeper aoa and a lower trej into a raised green. Will spin way more than an uphill lie which generally lessen the spin obviously due to a higher aoa but adds more trej. Slight downhill lies into a raised fast green will 100% spin the most.

  • @Thegovernmentisevil
    @Thegovernmentisevil Месяц назад

    To spin the ball, you have to clip it on the bottom grooves cleanly, without any grass getting between the ball and clubface. The ball is on the club face for 2-4 milliseconds. There is no "rolling" going on. When I need spin, I imagine I'm trying to wrap just a tiny portion of the golf ball around the leading edge. It usually comes out half the height or less of a stock shot, but when it lands its spinning like a mf.
