I'm not strict Keto, but I do try to follow HFLC as much as possible with an occasional fast. I lost 65 lb and am not done yet. I would like to lose another 25 lb. I'm 70 years old and been overweight for most of my adult life. Life without pancakes, toast and french fries took a bit of discipline when I first tried this HFLC approach four years ago, but it's not even difficult now. I now find commercials with syrup laden waffles or iced doughnuts disgusting, when before they used to make me hungry. I don't know if it's self-hypnosis or what, but my tastes have completely changed. I no longer crave carbs or sugar. I often skip lunches. Making fat my primary fuel and avoiding sugar in all its form was the best life change I ever made. No more Type 2 diabetes. No more hypertension. Even touches of rheumatism are disappearing. No more meds!! I've under-grown all my clothes and had to get a new wardrobe. I can still hike and canoe. Life is good.
I am on a 15 day water fast right now and usually am on Keto. I am on day 3 of my water fast and the headaches fave finally gone! I don’t like to go to my doctor because he is a pill pusher. I am allowing my body to heal itself.
I don't crave sugary food either. I was mostly eating healthy foods but not watching the hidden carbs and eating too many Halos and Cuties oranges, those easy to peel oranges. I would eat 6-8 oranges in one day. Now, I can't eat even one orange because they taste way too sweet.
John, I'm in the same boat, 70 years old and chubby most of my adult life. Thanks for your post; I find your info inspiring. I had a cookie yesterday and had a bs reading of 130 2 hours later! Well, 2 steps forward and one step backwards. I'm 5'5" and down to 156#. Only 5# to go.
John you give me hope! 57 yo female and doing this alone! My husband loves my sweets! He loves his mashed potatoes and tater tots. I love jelly beans also!
This HealCare is exactly the kind of hand holding so many people need. Dr. Westman saves and changes lives of people who otherwise would have given up. God bless him.
We all die. I'd rather die from high cholesterol and be slender, than die from obesity and diabetes. At least my thinner body will have better quality of life before I go. Before Keto I was really fat, sick and dying! Life, however long it will be, is GREAT now!
It sounds like you would benefit from the videos of David Diamond, PhD. He speaks directly to the issue of high LDL in a low carb/high fat diet. His thesis is that even small LDL particles, when not in the presence of glucose and fructose, pose no cardiovascular threat.
Your high cholesterol won't kill you. I'm sixty eight with what is apparently double the cholesterol level as is normal but my doctor wouldn't dream of suggesting a statin for me because I consume no carbs. Simple.

I had a gastro doctor specialist tell me I would be on pills for my acid reflux the rest of my life. He really said that. I started keto and within a week and a 1/2 my acid reflux Disappeared. 10 months now and I haven't even had heartburn. So much for specialists.
Yeah my Yale trained ENT told me that if I didnt do prilosec, which contrary to what he said did interfere with my digestion, my gerd wouldn't get better. A week on acv and salt and the gerd was gone. Then i stopped the acv and maintained the salt and still no gerd. So something cheap fixed me with no risk of dementia and the fancy Yale specialist whose drugs increase risk of alzheimers did not work. Doctors today are mostly drug dealers with expensive educations. The may know alot but i wonder about what they did learn. Low salt =low stomach acid. Stomach acid is hcl is hydrogens and chlorine molecules. Salt is NaCl. I wonder if the makers of prilosec funded the low salt recommendations.
I had so much acid reflux every day until I started keto. 2 years later I am eating again high carb diet and I have bad acid reflux again. I find it hard now to give up the carbs☹️☹️
This was the BEST video on keto I've seen so far. I was struggling with the "macros" mentality, but to have an internal medicine doctor say eat meat and fat, 2 cups of leafy greens and 1 cup of low carb vegies a day...I can do that! Thanks for sharing!
If you are considering Keto? I went on it jan 21st..was 245 pounds...BP was 145/90 avg in one month....feb 21st..218 lbs..BP (And I have measured it 100 times! ) is now consistently sub 120/80!.......ie 113/74 or 111/76....I am so sold on this! Funny thing is that i eat salt like a cow on a cowlick block! Himalayan pink two tablespoons a day! TABLESPOONS not teaspoons! and My BP has gone down...Now even though I am back on carbs my BP is still the same ..LOW! I have been back on carbs for the last 2 weeks and I have gained 4 lbs...Water I presume. Nuf said! This Keto think works! Astounding!
@@KyleMcHattie i hit maintenance this year after being obese my whole life. Ibe been playing around with how i react to a small serving of sweet potato, and i realized it brought back cravings and was hard to sayno to a swxond helping or something else. In 1.5 years i can count my major cravings on one hand. As much as i wonder i just realize more and more each day im choosing to not go back. Im also an RN and now knowing what i know, unless more knowledge differs, keto is for life. I believe ketones are the primary fuel source for humans and also believe many diseases are preventable. I tell everyone how its helped me for my genetic joint condition. Im also hoping it helps my migraines and General pains, too. I'm rambling. #nowayback
Be sure to keep your carbs and salt in check. Carvs increase water retention, and water retention plus high sodium intake drives up BP. please don't overdo it and keep watch over everything. I would hate for you to have such success and then slingshot back to pre-keto numbers, or perhaps even worse.
Dr Westman, thanks for giving credit to Dr Atkins. He is, after all , the father of low carb eating. Lot's has been learned over the nearly 50 years since his first book. All of the Keto proponents are standing on his shoulders. Now we have had many years to learn since his initial work and mind blowing research and understandings. I have lost 155 pounds over the last decade from low carb meals. Now I am continuing to lose more by reducing the protein and more fat. Thanks for your work and time educating the world. Blessings, Glenn SC
... and Boy Howdy did Dr. Atkins take a whole lot of abuse for sticking to his program. He has to be looking from the beyond and chuckling quite heartily.
Atkins "Super Energy diet" book in the mid 70's said to substitute fructose for sugar because sugar is fructose which is the sweet part. This way you get the sweetness with 1/2 the calories with the same energy. Things change.
@TSD TSD - Yet Banting wrote a 'keto' diet book in the 1800s. And before that, many groups of people around the world ate no sugar, very little or no fruit - and the fruit they had was available in limited amounts and only for a brief time each year, and low in sugar - like ligonberries and cranberries (almost the same)- ever eat a cranberry? Some refused to eat plants at all, like some of the people of the American plains. The Masia, and at least two other tribes in Africa lives essentially just on the meat, milk and blood of their livestock. Nomadic herders in the far north of the Old World ate reindeer, reindeer milk/cheese, and fish almost exclusively. And some seaweed and bits of a few other plants, which amounted to almost nothing in their total diet. The nomadic herders of Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Asia are other examples. The Alpine people of Europe lived primarily on the milk, cheese, butter and meat of their animals, with very few vegetables. Later some grew a little rye, which was made into sourdough bread that was always eaten with lots of cheese and/or butter. Grain even came late to the British Isles, and later still to Scotland and Ireland, and was never eaten in the quantity that potatoes were. No doubt there were more. I find it incredibly sad that with all our technological advances the entire medical and scientific community is so ignorant that people have to take things into their own hands and cure their own sicknesses and then the scientific community has to learn from the people instead of the other way around. It seems that there should be a bunch of malpractice lawsuits. Telling diabetics to eat carbs is just plain ignorant. How long have they kept these people sick? How much money have they made selling these people drugs that they shouldn't even need?
@@DeanSmith-ch1ep, I saw a lecture once where they claimed that we have over 5,000 drugs that can repair the spinal cord of mice with broken spines, yet only 5 of those have been tested on humans and none of them worked. He claimed that this was likely due to an incorrect dose. But, without the ability to take a bunch of people and break their spines so we can figure out which drugs work and what the proper dose is, it's going to be very difficult. However, the good news is, in a few years if you have a pet mouse and he get's run over and flattened by a car, we'll be able to inject it with a few drugs and it'll grow back to normal in a few days.
My husband went to his cardioligist 3 weeks ago. He had a "Congestive Heart Failure" episode in 2014. His bp was always considered a "high normal" He has been on Keto and IF for 3 months his bp was 123/69 .Much lower than ever before. Dr looks at him and says "What are you doing"? He says "Keto and IF" He immediately says "That is why your bp is lower. I am totally sold on IF the research is there. and Keto the research is almost there. Keep it up" And he took him off one of his bp meds. Currently on 1 pill of one med and 1/2 of a pill of another med. The Drs. are coming over and are understanding. We were no sure how he would respond but it was such a good visit!!!
Blood pressure meds are diuretics. They cause you to pee out sodium which reduces your blood volume and thus your blood pressure. Insulin is a hormone that causes your kidneys to retain sodium. In other words, insulin is the opposite of a diuretic. A high carb diet combined with 6 meals a day causes your insulin levels to be chronically high which causes you to retain sodium which results in high blood pressure. In other words, a high carb diet causes hypertension. The anecdotal evidence from thousands of people have shown quite clearly that when people cut the carbs out of their diet, their blood sodium levels decline forcing them to supplement with extra sodium in their diet. This is therefor now a well known fact which also agrees with the science. -- The Effect of Insulin on Renal Handling of Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, and Phosphate in Man www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC301822/pdf/jcinvest00168-0222.pdf "As shown in Table II, there was no significant change in plasma sodium concentration during insulin infusion. The mean plasma sodium concentration for the six subjects was 142±1 meq/liter in the control period and 141±+1 meq/liters during insulin administration. However, mean sodium excretion (UNaV) and sodium clearance (CNa) for the group were both significantly reduced during insulin administration as compared to the control period."

@@starfoxanita1, I am 49 years old and have avoided consuming sugar since I was around 10 years old. I have now been on a keto diet for over a year and I've been eating 3 eggs, 3 slices of bacon, and 9 slices of cheese nearly every day for the past 6 months. About a week ago I had my Coronary Artery Calcium score done and my score is 0. My non-fasting blood glucose was 110, and my cholesterol is on the lower end of high. I do not believe that cholesterol causes atherosclerosis. It is something else that's causing atherosclerosis that is also causing high cholesterol. LDL and HDL are lipoproteins that deliver fat throughout your body. Because my body is consuming fat for fuel, obviously I need more LDL, HDL and whatever other lipoproteins are necessary to keep my cells supplied with fuel.
@@terjeoseberg990 - Thanks for sharing your test results. Ivor Cummins has a lot of presentations on what actually caused cardi-vascular disease and heart attacks - and how a ketogenic diet helps. Some people have even been able to reduce their calcium artery score over time - and this is the best indicator of risk.
One of the best, most easily explained, and easily followed videos on Keto/LCHF I have seen. I expected nothing less from such a dedicated professional as Doc Westman. Very worthwhile listening and watching. To be shared around the world!!
Yes, Dr. Westman is wise to 'keep it simple'. It is important to remember to consume enough salt, especially if one is feeling dizzy or weak. And to consume enough magnesium. Dark leafy greens, organ meats, or a supplement will prevent or resolve muscle spasms/cramps. Potassium is also important. And to consume enough water. Other than that, nutritional ketosis does not have to be complicated!
I am in Vancouver BC Canada and am doing a 15 day water fast. I had headaches for the first 2 days but they are gone now. After I come off I will go back to Keto. It has helped my depression to go away a few years ago. I love this lifestyle.
I like the presentation style from Eric Westman. Keeps it simple and straight! I've heard too many times that how people can't do KETO because the foods are too expensive! As Eric Westman said, low carb takes priority over Grass Fed!
Been doing Keto since May. Never been able to afford grass fed anything. A1C in March, 7.6, A1C in October, 5.9 even though I cut out a diabetes med. Weight in May, 365, weight today, 316. HDL is up, Triglycerides are down. Is grass fed better, yep. But you can do it without them if you have to.
meanwhile he is selling people keto bars and beverages (not organic)....he's pretty transparent. He's way too rigid...I would never succeed on his form of keto diet.
@@MS-ev6bd I guess we have to remember that his usual patients would have been extremely obese when they enter his Duke clinic so there would be a necessity for rigidness from the beginning, and as he mentioned, he needed it to work first time! Others who are not so extreme can tailor it to suit their needs. Regarding the selling of Keto products, I agree that it is a bit strange but, as this way of life becomes more popular, the industry will be looking at these type of products. I guess somebody has to do it and maybe getting in early is compensation for battling against the "Norm" all of these years??
@@ketoi.f.youdare9229 I think the idea of saying organic and grass fed doesn't matter is a problem for me. Dr. Westman should refrain from any suggestion that grass fed/organic foods don't matter because it does. I'd just prefer he not discuss it rather than say it doesn't matter because it does. He is sooo MAINSTREAM and doesn't want to offend his FUNDERS...he is certainly funded at the University level BY corporations which are hostile to organics. Westman is not to be trusted in my book since he is tied to corporate industries.
@@MS-ev6bd We all interpret something different from the same presentation. If you watch his early obesity classes before it all went mainstream, you can see that priority is always low carb over optimising the carbs you are eating. Of course if one can afford it, then Grass fed, pasture raised, MCT and all the expensive supplements, but if the BMI is 50 and on many meds, the main priority must always be just low carb.
I will be glad when the medical world changes it’s paradigm of teaching low fat and low sodium. Having a daughter in nursing school share what they are teaching her and disregarding the research proving keto is safe and effective because she trusts science and feels that you need carbs for energy and that keto will give you a heart attack is disturbing to me. I was super skeptical until my own doctor told me to stop talking and just go research...and that DKA was not related..and I did just that. Watching the obesity code by dr Fung made me lose faith in most of my dietary knowledge. I could not administer insulin anymore without guilt.. Ugh. 23:26 - Another place sugar is hidden is in some meats. American Chinese food places use massive amounts of sugar on their grilled meats, and a lot of their other dishes, too. Once one stops eating sweets, the teriyaki beef and chicken will taste like a dessert. Watch out for barbeque sauce, too! Many are about 50% sugar! Bacon almost always has some sugar, and ham, too. Sugar curing became the big thing, after salt was (needlessly) demonized. Salt cured hams were wonderful. They were soaked overnight to remove excess salt, and the water was changed at least twice. We can read the label and avoid sugar. Watch out for sugar by other names: maltodextrose, etc.
I'm on 3 diabetic meds and insulin at night. I have been trying keto since Jan.1, 2019 lost 10 lbs then stalled out. I realize some of my mistakes now. The one good thing is I got my blood sugar to normal limits right away. I was supposed to return to my dietitian but she told me not to go on this diet so I cancelled my appointment with her.
Hi Linda, Well done with getting started. Don't let anyone discourage you. Dieticians are still preaching that old message about eating lots of whole grains and haven't really looked into the current science. They don't seem to understand that the diet they recommend is making a lot of people sick. I just can't eat a high amount of carbs with my metabolic disorder. I've started intermittent fasting and have tried to implement the Keto way of life. It's only been 2 weeks for me, but my clothes have already started to feel loose. Don't give up. Consistency is key. I've found some good stuff on the Diet Doctor site. You might find it useful. www.dietdoctor.com I wish you the best.
In April 2019, my weight was 226# today 7/20/10 It's 185#. Blood sugar was 444, Ha1c was 15! Today BSG was 87 and I will recheck A1C 8/5/19. Keto WORKS! a few days coupled with Intermittent Fasting also works. Easy for 24hr-36hr fast when your appetite is low. Good luck to those who give it a go! I will never go back to eating crap again. ❤

They taught me the same thing 37 yrs ago. I love diabetic teaching and wanted to become a diabetic clinical nurse, but I knew in my heart way back when that the ADA diet was wrong.
Medicine has turned away from its roots. No longer are they taught the value of nutrition or Foods, everything is listening to the drug reps. It's no longer about individual care they lump us all together under one umbrella and treat us all the same when we're all different. This is the problem I'm having and this is why I no longer see doctors. My insurance does not cover natural paths or holistic doctors who will treat me individually no it will only cover those that are covered by the AMA and the big drug cartels. So eating keto to bring your blood sugar down is wrong but eating carbs and taking medicine is right

🇬🇧 Dr. Westman. Thank you for your presentation. I have been following keto videos for a few weeks and yours is the most common sense way of looking at this life changing way of life. For 30 years I have suffered with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue and recently diagnosed with Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. In the UK there is not a lot of help for some illnesses. At my last visit, the GP explained this new illness and told me ‘to look at my diet and eat more green veg’. As my Fatigue is worse than normal I asked for a vitamin b12 test, he shook his head. I asked for another test for say magnesium levels, no response. I feel all doctors want to deal with the symptoms and not the underlying problem. I have therefore searched RUclips and watched hours of knowledgeable people explaining all ways of living and eating low carb diet, but today you have helped me see it’s all common sense! My only problem is as I have IBS and animal fat is a problem, so I am still trying to work out alternative fats apart from extra virgin olive and coconut oil. This has begun my new project in my old age! I’m 74. I been in pain for years but I am not giving up! Thank you Dr. Westman I have subscribed and will be checking out your videos with great interest. Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧
One of my favorite things about Facebook now, is that you can find support / information pages for just about anything. I have joined several low-carb/ keto groups! So much helpful information ⭐♥️⭐♥️
I had an A1C of 7.1 less than a year ago, and now, after losing 47 lbs. have an A1C of 5.6. Doc took me off metformin and micardis. I just turned 77 years old, and no longer have diabetes. But I intend on lowering my glucose more, but no need to lose anymore weight, weighing in at 172!
The best pork skins anywhere are the ones you get in Louisiana, they are called “cracklings” I bought a 5 pound bag when I left Lafayette. When I got back to corpus Christie Texas I had a handful left. Those things are so good!
Thank you Dr. Westman ...as a diabetic I'm looking forward to less medication...less than 2 weeks living Keto and it's so very easy after a lifetime of dieting...
There is something mesmerizing about Dr.Westmen. He is so intelligent and well spoken. His delivery of information is simple and absorbable to anyone. I will need to check out his latest products for support. For me, luckily nuts do not effect me on LCHF...I actually enjoy them with a piece of provolone cheese as a snack (I do measure them though...not unlimited).
Yes. Dr. Westman publiclly acknowledges the two patients who listened to Dr. Atkins, and showed him the way. Yet he was open minded enough to call Dr. Atkins, and to visit Dr. Atkins, and to learn about the Atkins diet firsthand. And then to study it, and then apply it.
Sheds Davids... mine did . I got rid of my terrible arthritic pain within one week just by not eating more than 20 grams carbohydrates a day . I’m 74 years old . Followed 3 doctors on you tube .
There is a documentary if you can find it called "The Men Who Made Us Fat". Very interesting how fast food companies and snack food companies hired psychologists to see what makes a person eat more which led to the value meal a McDonald s and Burger King, adding more fat and salt and sugar to the foods as science proved these were addicting . These companies knows how this is damaging people's health and straining our health care system esp here in Canada, but money rules. Japan has made it against the law to be overweight and have implemented treatment plans for those affected.
Great presentation!!... Message to all the doubters out there,.... IT WORKS!!!! I lost 25 pounds in 19 days without exercise using the keto diet, and I'm continuing indefinitely. I'm 6'1 and 250 lbs atm, and I've never felt healthier. Just give up that comfort food, its just food after all. I used to live off high carb foods chasing the energy I felt i needed. JUST DO IT, change the way you eat and live longer!!!!
Cyndi Manka people need to remember Dr. Berg is not a medical doctor. He is a chiropractor. He is very knowledgeable about many nutritional things but some things he just may not be qualified to answer. It’s best to speak to a cardiologist that knows about Keto.
I love how these “doctors” consider themselves experts in their fields in their former lives. Then when they learn new ideas and approaches they become the new experts in areas that the people have been gravitating towards.
No NUTS!? But then i quickly remembered that he treats people who are already in very problematic state. So no nuts and fruits is an asap solution. And he said it several times. Agree. I am lean and semi healthy person, doing IF on daily basis, and can control my nuts consumption, without binge eating them. And can "afford" some fruits here and there. So you got to have a balanced and individual approach to such restrictions. Context DOES matter. (Refined carbs, grains and sugars will be almost always bad for us) Fasting is not that good if your yesterday meal was Pepsi with fry. But OTHERWISE its a magic tool. Second step, i would say, to your recovery, to maintaining your health. After your body got adapted. and has vitamins and minerals in it. Dr. Phinney represented the only downside evidence we have now: after 48 hours or so without food, you will slowly start using your muscles as a protein source. Thats it. OMAD, IF, 16/8, 20/4 - pick what suits YOU. And remember, after keto adaptation, after droping your chronicly high levels of insulin, you will not eat as often and as much as you used to in 'carb' days ANYWAY. Satiation finally comes to you. So you fall to some kind of fasting naturally.
Yes, and as he mentions, many people will eat nuts like they used to eat potato chips - a LOT at a time. That said, they are a much better choice than potato chips, or those neon orange thingys, etc. Peanuts are not true nuts, and are not ideal. Also, most nuts are high in oxalates, which can cause some major problems. See Sally K Norton's presentation: '...Risking Oxalate Toxicity' ruclips.net/video/i7ArmIYGH0s/видео.html
The is the best video I have seen on keto. I thought I learned that I needed six to seven cups of green veggies. Too many carbs! It's not such a difficult diet. Especially if you like meat. I can have a slice of pizza if it's the only carb I consumed that day. Nuts are a problem...
Well, not actually eliminate insulin... After all, that would be Type 1 diabetes, as you know. The combination of IF or restricting the time period each day when one eats will definately help people get into ketosis - mostly through reducing the number of insulin releases per day. Dr. Westman is no doubt aware of Dr. Fung and his work. But yes - good point Diego - short periods of fasting, even just cutting back to two meals a day, works great - especially when we also cut out the sugars and starchy foods!! And it becomes almost effortless.
I am confused about the calories, in one slide it says to limit fats because of the calories and on another one with the mayo, butter, eggs, bacon, etc. it says no restriction... if I can't eat dairy, chocolate (85% cocoa), tahini, etc. then would eat lots of pork rinds as a treat with contains so much fat and calories...
Dr Westman, I'm a big believer in Keto diet And have convinced others including my sister to follow me. I got into keto through intermittent fasting and probably had an easier time of conversion to fat adaption. Recently talking my sister through some problems she reveal/reminded me she had her gallbladder removed. I was wondering if you or your clinic had information on altering a keto diet to someone who many be lacking the digestion for the staple animal products on which keto diets are easiest to implement. Thanks for any information. Best regards, Mike
This is not Dr. Westman's RUclips channel, and he is unlikely to see your question. However, most people who have had their gallbladder removed can consume fat with no problems. The gallbladder does not digest fats, or make the bile acids that help digest fat, but only stores it. When we eat a meal containing a lot of fat, it squeezes out the bile. If we avoid eating fat most of the time, the bile accumulates and becomes thickened, eventually forming 'stones'. Then when we eat a fatty meal, perhaps on a special occasion, and the gallbladder contracts, the gallstones cause pain. According to Dr. Paul Mason, removal of the gallbladder is almost never necessary. But those without a gallbladder can still eat fat- they may have to start more slowly, and eat more frequent low carb high fat meals, at least until their systems adjust. 22:45 ruclips.net/video/5nC-F5_cx64/видео.html There are also supplements to help digest fat, oxbile.

I would love to know where this keto clinic next to the surgery center is just to emphasize the point to my patients that bone on bone is not a reason for surgery. Along with all the great studies on keto, this is a great example to express to my folks who need more convincing
I'm on antydepressants pre menopause I just want to get rid of some bellyfat and my bloated belly... I've been on keto for one month (about 40-50 g. net carbs a day) and almost no benefits. Still hungry, tired and no wheith loss... perhaps I will try 20 g. carbs instead.
Bearing in mind this is what I THINK based on a few months of experience doing Keto + One Meal Every Other Day (or 47:1 fasting) combined with a litany of studies often cited by Dr. Jason Fung: you don't lose muscle you're using. If you are very overweight, you have a lot of lean, soft muscle supporting it (the legs are the easy examples). If you lose the fat mass and don't increase your exercise of the muscles around your fat stores, then yes, autophagy will consume the excess lean muscle mass. However, as I've seen by being able to jog longer and longer distances on this diet (not run, just jog), and as a few studies show, exercise will help you retain lean body mass while fasting. Where you get into trouble is when you do INTENSE exercise without a source of fresh amino acids. There are 9 essential ones the human body doesn't make. If you make a lot of tears in your muscles (weight lifting) without new, free-floating amino acids to repair and grow the muscle, autophagy will consume the damaged bits of muscle instead. It'd be cool to see a randomized study on the effects of fasting + strenuous exercise over 30 days vs. doing OMAD or OMEOD with majority of calories from quality protein and fat (in likely equal proportion). I think we'd find you don't lose anything you need as long as you give the body periodic supply of quality proteins.
In the presentation you said that "babies are born in ketosis" In the book Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes, he says Babies in womb get their nutrients from the mother through placenta and umbilical cord. The higher the mother's blood sugar the more glucose the child gets in her womb. As babies pancreases develops, it responds to the higher dose of glucose by developing more insulin secreting cells The baby will be born with more fat and have a tendency to over-secrete insulin and become insulin resistant as they get older. The baby will be predisposed to get fat.So my question is this, how are they born in ketosis if the mother is primarily a carb eater and the baby is getting its nutrients from the placenta directly coming from the mother?
This is very interesting, I was torn between Weight watchers and Keto. I am going to begin Keto tomorrow. I am not good at counting carbs, calories etc. But, I am going to cut sugar and white products. I know fruit is a NO-NO. But, what about black berries & straw berries? Any tips for beginners? Thanks!!!!!
Literally only one thing I can nitpick in this entire talk, which is the idea that fasting causes enough lean muscle loss to be worried about it relative to the metabolic benefits. Only restricted calorie diets cause a significant amount of loss of muscle mass. This has been studied. Fasting has been shown to be highly muscle-sparing and even conducive to muscle growth due to the release of IGF1 and other mechanisms that protect the lean mass while promoting fat oxidation. I'm still not clear on exactly where the tipping point is, but fasting and calorie restricted dieting are definitely not the same thing.
I got that book! I got all the Atkins books! I lost 90 lbs on the Atkins at one time! But sadly I had some trails got depressed and starting eating carbs again and put wieght back on. So I'm on the Atkins keto diet ago.
I was hoping Dr. Westman would have addressed grass fed versus conventionally raised meats - the video promoted that point...did I miss him talking about this topic?
Structural carbohydrates, aka plant fiber. Also things like pectin, which is also a carbohydrate, which is digestible. In theory, humans cannot digest plant fiber, however some will still have an insulin response to it. Plus it can cause a lot of issues: Dr. Paul Mason on dietary fiber: ruclips.net/video/xqUO4P9ADI0/видео.html Dr. Zoe Harcombe 'What About Fiber?' ruclips.net/video/4KrmpK_Lckg/видео.html
I only want to do keto for brain health as at age 38, I'm crippled with anoxic brain injury induced parkinsonism, dystonia, chronic fatigue, mitochondria dysfunction, and depression. I can't afford the organics and pasture raised. I understand that it doesn't matter for those on keto to lose weight, but does low quality affect those on keto for neurological conditions?
Not sure if the good doctor should be recommending the Hellman's mayonnaise. It's primary ingredient is soybean oil. Has he changed his mind about this?
Holding of sugar cravings can be a challenge. Dr. Westman mentions it took him 10 years to stop eating jelly beans at Eastertime. This is why he does not tell his patients to avoid artificial sweeteners, even though they are toxic. Or should I say 'also toxic'? A good brand of stevia extract can help provide a hint of sweetness when added to cream, which can be made into ice cream. We sometimes add chips we cut off a bar of 90% or 99% Lindt chocolate to the ice cream. Or 'fudge' or truffles made of butter, coconut oil, and cocoa powder. Etc. We find the stevia powder usually has sugar in it, too - or it is more bitter. Just use a little for a hint of sweetness and don't expect it to taste like sugar. Even the use of stevia can prolong sugar addiction. However, it is better than giving in and eating a sugary or starchy food - or something with both! We also need to be aware that using nut flour to make 'low carb' baked goods will load us up on oxalates. In addition to kidney stones, (usually calcium oxalate) oxalate crystals can accumulate in any tissue in the body, causing pain and damage. Sally K. Norton 'Lost Seasonality and the Overconsumption of Plants- Risking Oxalate Toxicity' - on RUclips. It is not easy to stop an addictive substance, and sugar is one, but you have come a long way!! (Dr. Phinney says it is not, as addiction is biochemical, but sugar does cause biochemical reactions that are consistent with addictive substances.)
Yeah, you don't have to track macros and nutrients... but remember this guy comes from an industry where data is king. If you want to become free, track and learn what effects changes in diet, macros, and calories have on you. He is preaching simplicity because most people need that to get started. And it is simple. But tracking with the Cronometer app is simple and nutrition is important. Also, if you want increased results, fast. If you want more benefits, excercise, not on a treadmill, but resistance training (weights, bands etc.)
Your private healthcare system might be a little costly but "an hour teaching session" is not what we get over here in the UK on socialised medicine. 5 minutes with the doctor or consultant and that's it- you're rationed!
Hi Bruce, I'm in London and that's exactly what I dislike about the NHS. On one hand it has helped me a lot, but whenever I visit my doc you just get that sense that they are working to a strict time and you don't always get quality care. I mean by the time you enter the room, it's time to leave again.
The U.S. Health care system went into the toilet with the affordable care bill, aka Obamacare. What a huge bunch of lies and deceit and to think that some people think it is great, B.S.! The only hope that we have is to eat wisely (KETO for me) and to stay healthy and out of the reach of the healthcare system, except for educated doctors that understand the organic cause of disease!
Kind of surprised about "net carbs" vs "total carbs" (minusing out fiber). Seems most practitioners/advisers say net carbs is what counts. Dr. Westman is in a different camp (one which changes the nature of avocados a bit).
I've watched a million videos on keto, and my consensus is both matter, especially if you're eating packaged goods. Eating high total carbs and high sugar alcohols and fibers to lower is not a good choice every day. Even products like almond flour and other nuts/seeds have a lot. If you're eating no packaged or processed foods your total carbs will be decent even with an avocado a day. I'd just be careful, to stay less than 20g net starting out, and until fat adapted.
@@dana102083 Thanks for the reply. I've been counting net, but eating real foods almost exclusively. (Haven't played with almond flour yet.) That's usually included an avocado a day, both for the healthy fat and for the potassium. But I've driven the number *very low, many days to the high single digits. That low allows an avocado and, say, 200g of broccoli, but it does cut down the variety of foods available a bit. I am without a doubt fat adapted now, so I'm very slowly and very carefully adding some good carbs (like blueberries) back, to see what my keto limit might be. I'm around 20g a day now, and still getting pretty high ketone numbers on a blood test. Thanks again.
@@TheRealLanceCummings trust yourself. In May, I stopped tracking and went by listening to my body. It sounds like you might be ready. I always saved room for berries in my 20g and eat with fat, like whipping cream. I notice I feel more hungry when I eat carbs and high protein, the next day I'm famished!! Right now I eat omad with one keto coffee around 1pm. I'm hoping to cut that some days but I'm a wimp..I love coffee..and cream :D but I'm still burning fat, just came out of a plateau and feeling great!! Ps, I didn't know what you meant by single digits there..:)
@@dana102083 I meant the net carb number. Sorry about that. :) I'm pretty close to omad now. My window has been 11 am to 3 pm, but now I've taken to breaking the fast around 11:30 with bone broth, then eating about 45 min later. So it's like one meal spread over a couple of hours. By 2:30 I usually close the window. Hear you on the berries. :D 50g of frozen blueberries with about 50 grams of yogurt or milk. Costs about 10g of carbs, but so nice. Cheers.
In Malaysia, we are goinging to implement a sweet tax of sweet sodas whic cokecoccola is fighting to stop. I pray they fail and our government sticks to its guns. If Malaysia, a smal county can do this, why not other bigger coutries. God bless Malaysia
Sadly, a tax doesn't work. A few cents more for a soda will not deter anyone. It's been implemented and has failed in many areas of the world. It's just the government's attempt to make more money off the backs of addicted people. This is compounded by the fact that soda is only a tiny part of most people's daily carb intake.
well - look at alcohol and smoking - both heavily taxed in some parts of the world yet people just are happy to spend the money. People don't break their habbits that easily. Unless you make sugar twice as expensive nothing will change but there will be plenty more money for the government of course
Good luck with that. All I have to do is look at all the taxes that they mount on cigarettes and people still smoke. When I smoked I Still Smoked even with all the taxes cigarettes are actually $10 or more in some places and people still buy them everyday
Taxes are not the answer. Plus we don't need the government interfering in choices like that. Tax sweet sodas NOW, what's next to be taxed because the 'experts' say it's unhealthy? Yes, sweet soda is unhealthy but remember, the 'health experts' claim red meat isn't very healthy.
Soybean oil based mayonnaise appears to raise my blood sugar by like 20 points!! OMG! Seriously??? Now I'm going shopping to start making my own mayo. Kraft olive oil mayo, which still has soybean oil in it, has a lesser impact.
Garth Burnett Primal Kitchen makes an avocado oil mayo that is good. But I started making my own mayo, and it’s even better. Key is using an immersion blender. Several how-to videos on RUclips.
Primal Kitchen is a good option which uses avocado oil. But I make my own now in an immersion blender using egg and avocado oil, and then I whisk a little EVOO in for more flavor. I found a recipe online that also explained how to coddle an egg if you want to sterilize it. Supposedly olive oil can get bitter if whipped by an immersion blender, so I whisk mine in afterwards. I use 3/4 cup avocado oil and 1/4 cup high quality EVOO. Our mayo tastes SO MUCH better than any store bought.
It's not the calories in things that might slow or stop weight loss while doing keto; it's the fat. Consumed dietary fat is used by the body before the stored fat; therefore, too much dietary fat will slow or stop loss of stored body fat.
Interesting. I have been following Dr. Eric Berg for 10 months now and he says to have 7 to 10 cups of salad/vegetables a day. When Dr. Eric Westman says to limit them in this video, is his recommendation of 2 cups of salad & one cup of vegetables, is that for each meal ??
If you stick to green leafy veggies you will stay below 20 carbs with 7 to 10 cups. It's when you add a variety that you have to watch the carbs. I can usually handle 30 but I plan for 20 because when I log everything it's usually a little higher.
@@rkesler3567 , Thank you for your reply. Keto is a little tricky for me because I can't eat as much protein as other people due to the Kidney Specialist telling me to cut back on red meat/protein. Just follow the science.!
I hear so much information about not eating too much protein for the Keto diet and some information says to eat all the protein you want. What is the correct approach to protein intake for keto? Thanks in advance.
Chester, "all the protein you want" doesn't work for many people for several reasons. First of all, you want to keep your insulin levels down. Anyone with a weight problem and/or type 2 diabetes has high insulin levels, especially in response to carbohydrate, but also to protein, especially animal protein, and especially beef. Insulin stores fat in the liver and fat cells and, thus, is the cause of weight gain. All the keto and low carb doctors explain that it is important to keep insulin levels down, and you definitely don't want massive fluctuations in insulin (and, therefore, in blood sugar). Those make you hungry, causing sugar/carbohydrate cravings which make you over eat. Second, eating excess protein, including meat, means your body will convert it into glucose stored in your liver and muscles and will raise blood sugar levels that will either cause too much insulin to be released by your pancreas or, if you are pre-diabetic or diabetic, will raise your blood sugar levels too high. This production of glucose out of protein is called gluconeogenesis, which means the production of new glucose. This may also kick you out of ketosis, out of burning your own fat. How someone reacts to protein depends on their insulin response, on their age, their height, physical activity, etc. therefore, how much is too much protein varies. Some Keto websites say no more than 15 percent. It also depends on whether you are on weight loss or maintenance. I just read a doctor today who says protein levels should remain constant and carbs should remain constant no matter whether one is losing weight or maintaining it; he thinks it is the amount of fat that should increase to maintain weight. Dr. Atkins used to say eat until you feel satiated but don't over-eat protein.
For protein to be converted to glucose requires a lot of protein. Stay below 1g/lb of body lean mass and you will be fine. 1g/lb is what bodybuilders shoot for so that plenty and will not convert to glucose at that level.
@@edbalboni Ed: If you are younger, that may be true. However, it does not require a lot of protein at all if you have type 2 diabetes and are older. It converts quickly. There are all kinds of articles on this, and I know from my own experiences. I really have to watch the amount of protein I eat. How much protein one needs depends on a lot of variables.
I once saw a RUclips video that said protein is fine provided you're on zero carbs. As soon as you start on the carbs then protein starts to drive the insulin requirement too. Sorry. Can't provide link. Too many of these videos around now!
The only problem I’m running into with keto is that eating conventional meat with it’s load of hormones and stuff flares my endometriosis. Chicken is the worst, i had to completely stop chicken after just 2 weeks. Beef and pork are better but still feel it. In my country, it’s virtually impossible to even find non-conventional meats. Any ideas on how to get sufficient amounts of clean protein in such situation? I would really appreciate any suggestions:)
Additional info- Before going keto I barely ate any meat. Eggs seem to be fine. Conventional dairy causes the same problems as conventional meat. Can you supply sufficient protein just from eating eggs?
to get into ketosis i ate 90 eggs in 3 days with butter and salt, i would have 15 scrambled eggs in morning and 15 fried ones later on, does anyone know the carb count the total carb count for 30 medium sized eggs, cause i take multivitamin everyday to called beyond tangy tangerine, and beyond osteo fx for bone health combined per day the carb count from these supplements are 16.5 grams, which leaves me only about 34 grams of carbs to get from food on a daily basis, today i had 23 eggs 100grams mushrooms and a 330gram t bone steak, so i'm pretty sure i'm still under 50 grams of carbs per day

John 👍 job

Simple.

Yeah my Yale trained ENT told me that if I didnt do prilosec, which contrary to what he said did interfere with my digestion, my gerd wouldn't get better. A week on acv and salt and the gerd was gone. Then i stopped the acv and maintained the salt and still no gerd.

Dr. Atkins took his cues from a man named Banting.
@@crawdaddy031 yes. and multiple studies done by doctors before him gave him the data to refine his theory. He is a pioneer but not nearly the first.
... and Boy Howdy did Dr.

Medical community makes no money if food is the answer. Its time they stopped making so much money.

Very thoughtful, thought-provoking, and put together well! Thank you.
Hi Linda,
Well done with getting started.

I wish you the best.
doctors and dietitian are trained to sell the highcarb LOW fat diet to make people sick and fat. (very sad)
Linda Johnston I learned that keto is like a marriage; if you cheat it won’t work. I hope you are doing well!

Very thankful my Cardiologist recommended low carb way of eating after having open heart bypass surgery. I just took a while to do it.
Excellent presentation! Thank you Dr. Westman!
One of my favorite things about Facebook now, is that you can find support / information pages for just about anything. I have joined several low-carb/ keto groups! So much helpful information ⭐♥️⭐♥️

Doctors should thank their patients who show them the way by not following their advice in the first place and then just do their own thing
Yes.

(Refined carbs, grains and sugars will be almost always bad for us)
Fasting is not that good if your yesterday meal was Pepsi with fry.
Марат Битоков I’ve been eating nuts. But I am able to limit and never more than 2 oz per day. Never more than 1 oz at a time.
Thanks two keto dudes for posting.
If you combine your treatment with IF you will eliminate the insulin in your patients, for me Jasón Fung, MD is the leader on the field of IF
Well, not actually eliminate insulin...
Such a great talk. Thank you!!!!
He covers all relevant issues/concerns about the keto diet...He's even honest enough to say "I don't know" if he isn't sure...
22:45 ruclips.net/video/5nC-F5_cx64/видео.html
There are also supplements to help digest fat, oxbile.

Thank you Dr. Westman. You saved lives.
Thanks!!!!!
Berries are fine. They have fiber, and that lowers net carbs. If you eat 5 g carbs and 3 g fiber, you ate 2 net carbs.
Wow! That was brilliant 👍
Yep, I've been following the work of Dr Jason Fung, and he mentions this topic in some of his RUclips vids.
I got that book! I got all the Atkins books! I lost 90 lbs on the Atkins at one time! But sadly I had some trails got depressed and starting eating carbs again and put wieght back on. So I'm on the Atkins keto diet ago.

20:01 - Question: If the total carbs is 37 grams, and the dietary fiber + sugar = 5 grams, what are the other 32 grams of carbs?
Great question
Structural carbohydrates, aka plant fiber. Also things like pectin, which is also a carbohydrate, which is digestible. In theory, humans cannot digest plant fiber, however some will still have an insulin response to it. Plus it can cause a lot of issues:

I only want to do keto for brain health as at age 38, I'm crippled with anoxic brain injury induced parkinsonism, dystonia, chronic fatigue, mitochondria dysfunction, and depression. I can't afford the organics and pasture raised. I understand that it doesn't matter for those on keto to lose weight, but does low quality affect those on keto for neurological conditions?
Not sure if the good doctor should be recommending the Hellman's mayonnaise. It's primary ingredient is soybean oil. Has he changed his mind about this?
Obviously pastured is better than CAFO raised.
Been on IF from September but unable to stave off my sugar cravings 😡
Getting there... Very slowly.
Dr you skip almond or coconut flour bread?? Seems like it would fit and is contrary to “no bread”

Hi Bruce,
I'm in London and that's exactly what I dislike about the NHS.
On one hand it has helped me a lot, but whenever I visit my doc you just get that sense that they are working to a strict time and you don't always get quality care. I mean by the time you enter the room, it's time to leave again.
Its the same in the US. 1 doctor will schedule 10 to 12 patients per hour. And we get sent a bill.
Cheers.
@@TheRealLanceCummings hey lance, how are you doing? :)
This was posted a year ago, but when was the presentation?
Doesn't matter. Information hasn't changed.
In Malaysia, we are goinging to implement a sweet tax of sweet sodas whic cokecoccola is fighting to stop. I pray they fail and our government sticks to its guns. If Malaysia, a smal county can do this, why not other bigger coutries. God bless Malaysia
Danish government did that Some years Ago. It failed. Did not Help anyone at all
Sadly, a tax doesn't work.
What’s a real shame is that man has even polluted the fish of our blessed oceans. Man I am, but it still infuriates me!
How about making your own with virgin olive oil and pasture raised eggs.
Calories can be fat. So it is the calories.
Dedrie O'Brien, 2 cups salad, one cup low carb veggies per day maximum. Dr Westman's plan is 20 total carbs or less per day. Hope that helps.
Thank you
If you stick to green leafy veggies you will stay below 20 carbs with 7 to 10 cups.
I am off Insulin Injections and my BGL's are great and have lost 30 kilos. I am close to my goal weight but I need to tone up also.
Dedrie O'Brien One day at a time! You’ve got this. You may heal enough over time to eat more protein too just don’t give up! Even if it’s slows or stops for awhile. I measured instead and it’s been amazing to me. I feel better all the time but I have had to tweak my foods along the way based on how I feel. Good luck to you! Dr Berg has great advice.
@@Jan96106 Wow! Excellent info! Thank you so much!😁
I once saw a RUclips video that said protein is fine provided you're on zero carbs. As soon as you start on the carbs then protein starts to drive the insulin requirement too. Sorry. Can't provide link. Too many of these videos around now!
Took to long to get to the point of the title about grass fed meat, in fact I heard no information on it
The only problem I’m running into with keto is that eating conventional meat with it’s load of hormones and stuff flares my endometriosis.
Can you supply sufficient protein just from eating eggs?
to get into ketosis i ate 90 eggs in 3 days with butter and salt, i would have 15 scrambled eggs in morning and 15 fried ones later on, does anyone know the carb count the total carb count for 30 medium sized eggs, cause i take multivitamin everyday to called beyond tangy tangerine, and beyond osteo fx for bone health combined per day the carb count from these supplements are 16.5 grams, which leaves me only about 34 grams of carbs to get from food on a daily basis, today i had 23 eggs 100grams mushrooms and a 330gram t bone steak, so i'm pretty sure i'm still under 50 grams of carbs per day
You are the best! Thank you.
I’m a Bariatric nurse and deal with weight regain every day
I’m convinced that LCHF will help, i am reluctant to recommend due to dumping syndrome in a gastric bypass due to the short bowel ...
@Kim Fetter thank you for replying... this is amazing to read .. So you've had no issues with dumping? Did you have some weight regain?. Sorry for so many questions
@Kim Fetter excellent.. I was thinking that spreading the fat out during the day would be the way to go... Thank you.. Xx
