Toni Basil was/is a choreographer who had this one hit in the 80’s. The cheer uniform Toni is wearing is actually hers from when she cheered for Las Vegas high school.
But she was actually in a bunch of movies in the 60s as well. She choreographed a lot of dance scenes in the old 60s beach movies. Was almost 40 when this song came out.
@@joshythehand2960 Not to mention her association with The Lockers!
Toni has had an amazing career, as an actress, dancer and choreographer. I love seeing her in her 60s movies! She did have another mild hit in the US with "Shoppin' A to Z" that reached to 77 on the billboard charts.
Interesting ... cool factoid!👍
Awwwwwh? That's adorable
Also in the movie Easyrider.
She's 78 now, still dancing and still a choreographer.
So she was in her late thirties - early fourties in this video? Crazy!
@@tornoutlaw 3 frikkin 9 even
ruclips.net/video/Xcpjta4q7lc/видео.html has a clip of her dancing at 74. She's still got moves.
@@sumnerhayes3411 Yes, was just going to mention this! She's amazing
She's an absolute LEGEND! In the 60s, she was a dancer/choreographer on the TV music show Hullabaloo, the TAMI Show, several Beach movies, an Elvis movie, and the Monkees movie. In the 70's , she was a co-founder of The Lockers, a street dance group that pioneered the Popping and Locking style that gave us The Robot dance, and was a major influence on Hip Hop. Throughout the 80s, she choreographed numerous music videos for both major and minor acts, if you see any video from that era that has catchy/quirky dance moves, she was probably involved.
Hell yes its from the eighties. We actually had fun back then.
Uh, I'm STILL having fun. Don't know what you're doing. Maybe you should go out on some of those day trips the nursing home has...
We didn't do too bad back in the '70s, either!
Its from the 50s, it was originally called hey kitty and was recorded by a English group called Racey
@@ffjsb Really now . Oh ffjsb your so smug but you bring a smile to my mug🙃! Hey Mickey !
@@dagnabbit6187 ????
She was 39 when she did this and had already had an amazing career as a dancer. Amongst choreographers she is considered a legend having worked as a dancer for Elvis in some of his movies as well working with David Bowie, Frank Sinatra and the Monkees amongst many many others.
She has also won an Emmy, was nominated for a Grammy and had this song go platinum in a bunch of different countries including the US. In fact this song was considered so iconic that it was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the defining songs of the 1980’s
The cheerleader outfit she wore in the video was the same one she wore in high school.
Toni Basil was 39 when Mickey was released. She looks much younger in the video.
No she doesn't 😂
Toni is a legend. She was a dancer in the Elvis film "Viva Las Vegas". She also choreographed the Talking Heads film clip "Once in a lifetime"
She was also in the movie Easy Rider
@@claytonsmith4299 I never knew that.
@@paullohrisch257 her characters name was Mary
@@paullohrisch257 she was in the acid sex scene "The House of Blue Light"
She was also in "Village of the Giants" and The Monkees movie "Head" dancing beautifully
And her work with The Lockers! Just an amazing talent!
People only know her for this. As a choreographer, she's one of the biggest names in Hollywood history. Her resume is absolutely mind boggling.
Toni Basil "collaborated with David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Talking Heads (choreographing and co-directing the acclaimed video for "Once in a Lifetime"), the Monkees, Frank Sinatra, George Lucas, Quentin Tarantino, Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks, Bette Midler, and The Muppets."
Interesting that The Monkees are mentioned... makes me wonder if "Mickey" is in any way about, inspired by, or dedicated to Mickey Dolenz?
Brad, yes it was popular. Song peaked at #1 in december 1982, and spent 27 weeks on the chart.
It was popular on my stereo too. On repeat every morning getting ready for school for many weeks! My family reminded me of that for years. Then my daughter found my 45 and she did the same to me. So, it's definitely catchy! LOL
Toni Basil was a classic 60's dancer who had a hit song in the 80s' "Mickey" Very catchy and great dancing.
Even in her 70s she can dance like a boss .She was known mainly for her choreographic skills. She even had a pop and lock group in the 1970s that included Fred Barry from What's Happening! fame
"She looks psycho". Classic. She is selling it B-man. This song was huge on the coasts. She did allot of funny pop songs. And yes, 80s.
Toni is an amazing women and a top shelf performer, who has had an amazing career over the years, and has the respect of all those who have worked with her over the years. Her most recent choreography work was on Quentin Tarantino's latest movie "Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood", were he hand picked her to do the proper period dancing for that movie.
"Hey, psychos have talents" - I laughed way harder at this than I should have.
A lot of crazy people are kinda smart...
It was from the 80s and fyi, she's choreographed for Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, among others artists.
The original was from the 70s, she covered it
The good thing about the 80's was that the were alot of songs that didn't have to make sense. They were just fun to hear.
Just like zoomer memes :B
Except this song is from the 70s, its a remake
Plenty of those songs today too so don't pretend
I still have this record- it came out when I was in elementary school. ❤️ Toni Basil is an awesome dancer/choreographer... who just happened to put out a hit record. There are videos of her to this day, in her 70s, still dancing.
I remember when I was in the army, stationed at Ft Bliss,Tx,I was in our orderly room with several other people when this song came on the radio,a couple of guys started singing and dancing to this tune !! Next thing you know,we all started singing and dancing, having a ball !!! LOL. Our 1st Sgt came charging out his office to see what was going on and just started laughing !!! LOL. A fun moment. LOL.
This was such a huge hit with both guys and girls. My Grandma even knew the words to this song.
I haven't heard that song since I was a kid! I still remembered every word of it, and it took me back to being a kid in school again.
Thanks for the memories! ❣️
I havent been seeing anyone mention that she is one of the seven original Lockers, famous dance group that performed on Soul Train and had Fred Berry (What's Happening) and Shabba Doo (Breakin Films) as part of the group and introduced street dance to the masses..which was the precursor to Break Dancing.
The chant in this song was an inspiration for Rick Rubin's production on RUN-DMC's "Tricky." "It's tricky to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that's right on time. It's tricky!"
That was a great album!! Hard Times was my personal fave...I can still relate to it today! LOL
Another crazy song this makes me think of is “Whip It” by Devo!
Yes! They need to react to that one!
Come to think of it all of New Wave was rather tweaked out. Lot's of nervous energy.
This song always makes me want to also hear the Ting Tings' That's Not My Name ! though I think there's about 25 years between their releases.
Ting Tings first album was brilliant. “Great DJ” was another catchy song off it.
I saw The Ting Tings live and they were great! I'm always amazed at the level of talent in successful bands with only two members. Not easy to pull off and there aren't a lot of them. The White Stripes is another favorite, but I never got to see them live.
No lie - choreographer Toni Basil had the entire video worked out, and wrote the song to fit the dancing. It was all over MTV.
OMG this really reminds me of another one they need to hit: Bow Wow Wow's I Want Candy
She is in her 70s now , and still dancing .
Cheerleaders are from Carson high school in Los Angeles county, they were a championship cheerleading squad…
And at the time rooted for one of the best HS football teams in the nation.
Toni was a dancer/choreographer turned singer she was fun for sure but this was about it for her as far as hit songs.
I think Gwen Stefani emulated this kinda style in some ways when she broke more out as a solo artist.
Oh yeah, Hollaback Girl definitely has this vibe!
Gwen is dead. Executed for being a child murdering Satanist
I was a freshman in high school when it was released in the early 80s and this was played a lot..a huge hit. She was almost 40 in this video. She also sings this in Spanish.
Great. Now it'll be another 40 years I'll be wandering through the house and randomly start cheering, "Oh Mickey you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, Hey Mickey!" 6'2", 240lb outdoorsman. It's humiliating.
This has got to be one of the best video dances ever.
I love this song, always have, always will
I absolutely loved this song when I was a little kid and the crazy part is she was actually 40 when she did this song was one of her few songs she was a choreographed for years but this was her first foray in the music on her own
Toni Basil was also a session singer, So they called her in to sing this song to give the singer somewhere to go, But she sang the song so well they kept HER!
Yes I remember I had that face when I saw this video for the first time. I think the woman is crazy nerdy-obsessed with dance. I think she’s a genius and a legend.
Yes, this is from the 1980s. Some other fun songs like this are 1) Julie Brown "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun", 2) Josie Cotton "Johnny Are You Queer?", 3) Angel and the Reruns "Buffy Come Back" and 4) Butch Patrick and The Monsters "What Ever Happened to Eddie?".
Julie Brown! I remember "Cause I'm a blonde" best line, "I can't spell VW, but I have a Porsche"
I was so happy when I heard there was much more to her than Micky, a one-hit wonder. What a fabulous performer/artist. Thank God for RUclips, so I can have access to all this stuff from years back.
This song was a huge hit in the eighties! Toni Basil was a well known choreographer so, yeah, she could dance! This song was about a boy who toys with a girls affections! “Take me by the hand” is not necessarily literal, it could mean they did much more than hold hands!!❤️❤️
80's super fun song. Spunk and energy!
In addition to her talents as a dancer and choreographer, Ms. Toni Basil put in an appearance in the movie "Easy Rider" as a "good time" girl and escorts the boys in the movie (Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper) as they explore New Orleans during Mardi Gras.
I think that the other lady in that scene with Toni Basil was the late Karen Black !
@@michaelavery6390 You are correct sir!
She has had an amazing career, long before this song ever came out.
Bugger!! They didn’t show the part of the video with her band dancing about . The bass player with the Mohawk doing flips onto his back and shit. I loved this when I was 5
No. 1 in December 1982! Serious choreography for a MTV video at the time
This chick is a legendary hip hop pop locking dancer. Look that shit up.
Fun fact: She was in an Elvis movie in 1964, and in a Quentin Tarantino flick in 2019, and in between she did this, and was an influential street dancer
She was also in Easyrider, where she tells Peter Fonda “don’t you like me” while he’s tripping on LSD.
1980s Kats. I cant believe these songs are still new to people and I been jamming too all these years! Man I miss the 80s!
“She looks psycho!” You officially win The Neenernet Quote Of The Week!
I saw her on S.N.L in 1978 as part of an alll black dance team...and she was the best dancer in it..she finished her dance "solo" with a ballerina spin, and a side split--.she's taught many an actor to dance,...even as a 16-year old kid on the 1964 T.A.M.I. show concert, her moves stood out from the other 12 dancers on the stage..the lady can boogie, for sure!
She's legendary 1960's choreographer and B- movie actress Toni Basil who is still alive and at 79 still has that same in her pep 😌👌💯
Toni Basil was and is a famous Choreographer back then, and still today. Toni did film choreography through the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s include American Graffiti (1973), The Rose (1979), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Something to Talk About (1995), That Thing You Do (1996), My Best Friend's Wedding (1997),[15] Legally Blonde (2001), Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003), Charlie Wilson's War (2007), and The House Bunny (2008).
She also choreographed Quentin Tarantino's 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at the age of 75.
Hah Classic MTV
Toni is a force of nature . Great energy . Lena Lovich has a great song called Lucky Number ... it will make you go OKKKKEEE lol , it opened peoples ears in 1979
Toni Basil is an icon. It’s easier to mention what she has not done than what she has because she’s done everything. Worked with Elvis, Sinatra, Michael Jackson for starters. She’s in the International Hip Hop Hall of Fame for being in the Pioneer group The Lockers. In The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame via “Mickey” song. Emmy winner, Grammy and MTV nominated. Been in and choreographed for many major movies and artists. Influenced Madonna to name a few. She’s had other hit songs, her follow up album had one track hit 4 on the dance charts. Had a hit in a 60s pop group and lead plenty of vocals to other songs. At 78 she is still dancing and in the latest Tarantino movie.
One of the first music videos to ever play on MTV... fun to see.
Toni Basil was a hugely successful choreographer and did the Choreography for Bowie's Glass Spider tour - a production he said afterwards was so complex he would never do a bigger one! This music video used to be exihbited in the NY Museum of Modern Art
Rember this this the very start of video. There was no standard. They all were winging it. Appreciate the real cheer leaders supporting her
Toni Basil has been around since Elvis and was in one of his movies, was in a Frank Sinatra Movie also, so yeah kind of a relic even when this song came out.... this was actually sort of a cover song anyway but I can't remember the artist at the moment.
When I saw this video the first time, I thought she was a little freaky but then one day I saw her on some TV show where she danced and sang the same song and she was beautiful!! I've never forgotten how beautiful she really was!!
Back in the day, you could not escape this song on the radio, it was everywhere at the bottom and the top of the hour.
You guys are CRUSHING IT lately. Love your stuff. Lately it's been a trip through my glorious college years.
Your 80's journey will not be complete without The Fixx. Many excellent songs to choose from but I suggest starting off with Red Skies At Night.
The Fixx are incredible!! So many great songs!!
If you were looking you would have seen her name on the opening credits of "Easy Rider" when you reacted to "Born to be Wild" very recently. She played a character in the film.
This song was released in 1982 and was a big hit in the US, UK and Canada
Love you two kiddos!... Keep listening and I will keep watching
The 80s was such a great time to be a teen
Always liked this song-but this reaction is the best I've seen in a good while. Lol 😆
This was Toni Basil's first (and only) hit song, in 1982. She was 39 years old and wearing the same cheerleader uniform she wore in high school.
But it wasn't her first appearance in entertainment. Among other things, she was in the 1968 movie _Head,_ where she danced with Davy Jones of the Monkees. Another of the Monkees is named Micky, so there are jokes that "she dances with Davy but sings about Micky." She was also in 1969's _Easy Rider._
1982 release this is one of those songs everyone said they hated but they all knew the words. Great song when you know the history.
Toni Basil was, if I remember correctly, was around 40 when she made this. She’s still a badass 40-odd years later.
"you take me by the heart, when you take me by the hand" great lyric.
That's her cheerleader outfit from high school. She is a choreographer first (like Paula Abdul) and a singer second. She's choreographed 100's and 100's videos/movies/live shows. She had a recent interview in her 70's and she's a better dancer still than 99% of anyone out there.
Thirty-nine years young doing this, still doing the splits, still in her original cheer uniform from highschool. She's still dancing. She's awesome. She has the best attitude on the planet. Check her out. She rocks.
Toni was part of the famous dance group "The Lockers" in the early 70s with her boyfriend/founder, Don Cambellock, who invented the dance style known as locking and popping. Other memebers of the group include Shabba Doo, who was in the "Breakin'" movies (Electric Boogaloo), and Penguin, aka Fred Berry who played Rerun in the tv comedy "What's Happening". ruclips.net/video/NwAZoce7QHY/видео.html
The Mickey that she is singing about was Micky Dolenz from the Monkees. Apparently she actually obsessed over him.
Early 80s New Wave Rock, bless her. A choreographer, songwriter, dancer and actress. Toni Basil had a good role in 1969's "Easy Rider", a low budget movie by actor Dennis Hopper, which made so much money that it changed the way Hollywood made and promoted movies. The Steppenwolf song "Born To Be Wild" was the main theme of that film. May I mention here that Steppenwolf, although they tapped into the spirit of the U.S. quite deeply, was/is a Canadian band?
Es una de mis canciones favoritas de los 80's, en Guatemala llegó a estar en el primer lugar durante un buen tiempo. Saludos desde Ciudad de Guatemala en Centro América.
That's why many ppl suggested Mickey during your live stream the other day. Yes fun and unforgettable song.
She's a choreographer from the 1960's and was nearly 40 when she made this video in the 80s.
More 80s greatness lol. I'd totally forgotten about this song, but it was on the radio and MTV about 3x an hour when it first came out.
"Mickey" is a song recorded by American singer and choreographer Toni Basil for her debut studio album, Word of Mouth, in 1981.
Originally released as a single in the U.K. in 1981, “Mickey” made its way to the United States in 1982 to widespread success, with its iconic cheerleading-themed music video being played in heavy rotation on MTV and the new wave pop hit reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It was originally released in 1979 in the UK by a group called Racey under the title
"Kitty" (rhymes with "what a pity") as it was sung by men.
My High School senior theme song in '84, my 'New Wave' friends and I got a kick that they didn't know it was about pursuing a gay man, lol!
When this came out my local radio station played in on repeat for 24 hours. I was really young but I remember it being very popular.
Toni Basil wasn't even a singer or an artist, she was just an aging cheerleader who happened to make one of the most iconic songs/videos of the 80s. It's the ultimate right place, right time situation.
She was around 40-45 when she did this.
She's a well known movie choreographer. Her work dates back to the 60's
Got to No.2 in UK, due to inspired catchy tune, empowering gender lyrics and dance moves that teen girls loved! And the visual fantasy of every teenage boys dream in the early 80s! She covered all the pop loving teen bases with this track! This video was so hot when I was 13! I still have the original single on vinyl in my classic 80s collections, still goes down a storm with my 80s partys DJ sets! 👌🇬🇧😆❤️
40 years on and this song still rocks!!!.... It is so captivating to watch them dance and don't seem to get tired of it.... Not sure if it is the song or the video or me!!! ....Thank you... Toni Basil... cheers!!! 🤩💙👏🥂🎉
☆LONG LIVE THE 80'S☆
hahaha "Psychos have talents." She had been a cheerleader and wanted to do a cheer song. Definitely succeeded! This song was played every half time.
This was from '81 / '82. She was a dancer / choreographer / actress / singer and is 78 yrs old !
It’s a fire song. Still hits
Hockey games and roller rinks is where I heard it the most
The Mickey she's singing about is Mickey from the group The Monkees
This song was a staple in the early days of MTV when the vast majority of viewers were high school and college students age. It was meant to be over the top. Cheerleader moves and makeup are exaggerated because most people are watching from a distance. The 80's were a special time for sure. MTV was basically our one-sided social media.
80’s for sure! A staple at cheer competitions
first saw the hey mickey video in autumn 1981 then song entered uk charts in feb 1982 xx
this is such a good reaction video! the girl on the right proper getting into it 1:02 onwards, then when it gets paused and the realisation this song is about a psycho girl obsessed by micky, the bop she has somewhat goes for a minute or so, then gradually gets back into it!.. also, i just realised with that psycho comment, toni basil actually looks similar to harley quinn! can't help but bop to this tune though.
She was born
Antonia Christina Basilotta
September 22, 1943 (age 78). This song was released in 1982. Basil is one of the seven original Lockers, the street dance group considered "the group that changed the face of dance".
"She doesn't blink." Him: "Right??!!" (Face full of shocked terror and horror) 😂😂😂😂
I'm 23 and grew up listening to this song love it
