I’ve been playing with my Kulp K8-PB and one of the greatest features of this controller and the new versions of xLights is the upload to controller feature you don’t need to enter anything manually now and it does all the channel calculations and configurations for you. I just define my models, use the visualizer to bind the models to the Kulp's outputs and click upload and it’s pretty much done, no calculator involved and all the configuration is set with the correct values. Thank you for all your videos, they’ve helped me a lot, I’m just hoping I can have a small show this year (my first one)
Hi Eduardo. You are absolutely correct. It's great to have the tools that talk to each other and make our life easier. Thanks for watching. My best wishes to you and your family. Good luck with your show.
Just saw this video about an hour ago (8:55 pm - 10/08/2023) but wish I would have seen it a few months ago. If so, I would probably have had a beginning show this year. I've watched numerous videos this summer but just couldn't "wrap my arms" around how to do the set up and what stuff I really needed to order, so about mid-August just gave up and hoped I might be able to try again in '24. This video explained things so much better and was more understandable for me. THANKS SO MUCH !! Looks like a K8 would be more than enough for me but was planning on a K16 (only $45 more) just to have some options.
Thank you for your kind words. Glad to help. Can't go wrong with a K16, more ports more options. You're going to love putting a Christmas show together. Thanks for watching.
Thank you Trevi for simple instruction this video. Im using ESP-8266 wifi controller for my RGB mega tree and other props and the run the lightshow on xlights. I want to upgrade my controller that can handle more pixels and after watching your video, this gave me an idea to use Kulp controller.
hello, I did exactly the same steps that you did, in the web test, the pixels light up the same as yours, however, it does not enable the function of sending the input ports, even putting the same settings as you indicate. In the lower right corner, the green light turns on, implying that it is online, however, I cannot send the input ports automatically. Doing the manual step, when clicking on the lamp in xlights, it does not send the effect. Any tips on what might be going on?
Hi, It's hard to know exactly what you are missing. Double Check the IP address and all the steps starting on minute 20:50. Also check that the Input Enable option is check as show in minute 24:55
Followed your steps but i don't have the upload layout button. Everything else up to those steps worked. Only thing I can think of is i'm connected by wifi?
@@trevilights it does it thenother way to find the ffp but it just doesn't have that button but like your other follower said it automatically does it now it looks like it.

I am brand new at this and your videos have been amazing. Thank you for taking time out of your life and doing this for us. I’m curious if I really need a Kulp? I bought a falcon f16v4 ready to run controller and I’m just doing a mega tree (800 pixels), star (90 pixels), and 2 singing trees (252 pixels each). Also would love to see a step by step video of how you actually add your power supply.
Hi There. Thank you so much for your words. No, you do not need a Kulp if you already own an F16V4, unless fo course, you have a special need of running your show out of two controllers. The reason for this video, was to let newbies know that there are more options beside the F16V4, cheaper and that will perform as well within their limitations. You have a long way to go with your F16V4. Let me know if you need any assistance.
Hey Trev hope you doing well , finally got the tree set up and sorted ready to put up when time comes , i came across these and decided to get a couple , certainly makes life a lot easier , maybe these could help others power inject , here they are , Hanson Power-8 Power Distribution Board , maybe this could help others out as well .

Great tutorial! I’m doing my first show in 2023. Does this setup control when the show turns on and off as well? Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your videos have been extremely helpful.
Thanks Eric. The FPP software that is installed in the Beaglebone takes care of everything. Here you store the MP3, Sequences, playlists and schedules.

Hola.
Saludos.
Hola Javier. Cuantos pixeles vas a usar inicialmente? 5,000, 10,000 mas?
Saludos.
I love your videos. This is going to be my first year and your content is very helpful. I was wondering if you are aware of anybody that sells sequences in Spanish. Do you know of anyone that does this? I asked on one of the fb groups but didn't really get anything.
Hey John. I am glad you are finding my videos useful. I do not do full sequences, but I do create singing faces timming tracks that can be imported into your sequence. The timming track only includes the phonemes that makes the figures sing. If you have a mega tree and snowflakes, those effect are up to you. Send me an email to contact@trevilights.com if interested. Any song in particular?
I have really been thinking about getting into doing this for next years display. What do you recommend me using for the power supply? Also how many lights can I run off of one supply? I have so many questions wiring and everything. I been doing our Christmas light contest and placing second for the last two years. I really enjoy doing this stuff.
Hey John, Thanks for watching. It is a very rewarding hobby. It comes with a price but the outcome looks awesome. Everyone pretty much use the Mean Well Power supply. I have a few and have been working for 5 seasons with no issues. How many pixels can you power from one 12v 29A power supply? It depends on the brightness you choose. I do 35% and I can easily power round 4000 pixels. I you are going to go for it, I do recommend you start early in the year, so you have enough time to test and experiment. Correct. You will also need a few other things such an ethernet dongle to connect to the beaglebone, a WIfi Dongle (if you want to go wireless) and a sound card, if you want sound.
Hey Trev excellent input as always , my question is though how would you power inject to all the pixels ? would you use another power supply to all ? what would be your suggestion power injecting too all , any help welcome .
Hey Dave. Good to hear from you. If the controller is near to your other props then using the same power supply is your best option, of course be careful not to overload it. In my case, I use a secondary supply since my controller sits in my garage. So basically I am paralleling power supplies, something that according to some people you should never, erver do. Below is a link of the power supplies I use, and in the description it says that paralleling is possible. So, I do it. If you want to be on the safe side you can cut the positive cable coming from the controller somewhere at the beginning of your first string, but after the first pixel. I only use two power supplies. The one in the controller and one outside that power all my props. www.amazon.com/Universal-Regulated-Switching-Converter-Transformer/dp/B08LDC41B6/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=1ADFSU8F2K0B3&keywords=12v%2Bpower%2Bsupply%2Bparallel&qid=1668183644&sprefix=12v%2Bpower%2Bsupply%2Bparallel%2Caps%2C151&sr=8-1-spons&th=1

Thank you for this. Just bought my first. Looking to go from Vixen to X-Lights. Your instruction made the set up very easy. I also do Fourth of July and Halloween light shows. Can the Kulp be interchangeable from one show to another without the need of purchasing 1 for each season light show and without deleting and added each season show.
Hey Jim, Awesome! You are going to love the simplicity of these controllers. And yes, you can have multiple shows depending on the season. This is what I would recomend. In xlights, on the Controllers Tab, you can create/change temporary show folders. You can create one per season and switch between them. Each temporary folder will have it's own layout. The 4th July can have flags, arches, etc. The Hallowen folder can have spoky trees, spiders, etc. Then when you are done adding elements to your show, you can use the xlights Visualise option and upload the setting to your controller with one click. The only thing you will have to do, obiously, is to connect your elements to the correct port for each season.

Hi Trevi, Thanks for the great tutorials. At the beginning of setting up the FPP, you set it to "Player" mode to test some local pattern sequences, but towards the end of the video with setting up XLights to play sequences to the FPP, should we then re-configure FPP back to "Remote" mode? I didn't see you mention the Remote mode during the Xlights tests, but maybe i don't fully understand "Remote" mode and what it's remoted to?
Hi Marty, if your FPP is going to the main source of your sequences, then set it to be player. If your controller will not be the main player, then set it as Remote. Since this is going to be my main and only controller, then it should be set to player. Thanks for watching.
@@trevilights Thanks for your fast reply. ok, so did you set your FPP back to "Remote" when you did your Xlights test towards the end of the video? (i guess you forgot to show that in your video). Thank you I just got my first K8-B and will be putting ti together and you have the simplest and easiest way to set it up compared to others. Only question I have is won't the ip address change once you put the Wifi on it? I am going to use the usb for wifi and the music will play out of my computer through blutooth. Thank you for making the video.
Hey Robert. I am glad you decided to get one, you are going to like it. Yes, once you setup your wifi using your network name and password you will get a second Ip. You can disconnect the ethernet cord and access de K8 wirelessly. You can now move it wherever you want as long as you have a signal.
One more note. I asume that you are creating a musical sequence, correct? This means that the sequence will be playing from the FPP and so the music, so you need to an audio jack on the BB. Unless you are playing everything from your computer using the ethernet cord. The Wifi is not fast enought to play a sequence and music without going out of sync.
Si.
Hi Trevor wonder if you can shed some light on this for me , have a tree with 12 strings 50 pixels each string , I only want port 1 to control this with an extra power supply to run the power injections , it has one continuous data for all , how would you set that up on FPP on channels , I cannot add data to the strings it’s from the start to finish in one line 600 pixels , then on another port add more parts of a display , just not sure as I know each channel handles 170 any help welcome , do I add 4 channels at 150 on port 1 ? .
in xlights this will be setup as 1 String, 600 pixels per string and 12 strands. Everything fits in 1 port out of the eight you got. If you are going to use port 1 on your Kulp, then just tell the Kulp on port one that you have 600 pixels starting on channel 1 if that's the case, I do not know if this is the first elemets of your show. On xlights set the model to start in channel 1 also. that's it. Do not get confused between ports (8 on the KulpK8). Each port can handle 1500 pixels, more that enough for your tree.
@@LawnBaseballGrillen Sure you can get a smaller power supply. I chose a large one because you can power all the pixels ports and do power injection from this same power supply. You are correct. You will have to split you 100 pixel string into two 48 strings to wire the snowflakes. Also you will need add some waterproof pigtails to the wires. A tree is an eye catcher. You can do a full round tree(360 degrees) or half a tree(180 degrees) To make it easier, you can use 50 pixels per strand (2 inch separation) and do a 32 strand round tree or 16 strands for half a tree. Obviously, doing snowflakes is much simpler. You have options.

Hello! Thank you for doing these videos. They are very interesting and informative. Do you know if the singing Christmas lightbulbs can be made with the K8-B Kulp controller? I’ve being trying to order the falcon controller, but it’s always out of stock.
Hi There. Yes, the Kulp K8-B can control pretty much the same as the Falcon on a smaller scale. Just keep in mind that you will also need a beaglebone and a SD card with the Falcon Player. You will also need a USB Audio Dongle and of course a Power Supply. Have you called the sellers of the Falcon Controller? They may have a few "Ready to Run" controllers in stock. Their website might not be accuarate. Thanks for watching.
Just got a falcon 16v5 can I run my kulp as the player and don't need a pi on the falcon? I love this little player don't want to have to rub a pi if I don't have to.
A few notes here. The Falcon can run all alone if you set it to "Player" Mode. The only downside of this is that I've seen it's performace affected since now is running a sequence, controlling lights and playing music. This is why many people choose to use a Pi to run the show and just send data to the F16V5 and other controllers. The Kulp use a Beaglebone as the brain of the device, It takes care of everything. You will still need to add a Wifi and Audio dongle, but beside that, they are pretty good controllers. I stopped using Falcon and started using Kulp instead. Another nice thing is that you can connect 1500 pixels per port instrad of only 1024 for the Falcon. I've tested 1600 lights on one port sucessfully.
@trevilights you ran 1600 but with power injection? I plan to run the kulp and run the falcon as just running the ground floor props the kulp as you said has rhe beagle that runs the show and .music. love it but needed another controller fast so ordered pre-built falconn16v5 to run as don't have time to build the kulp. I hope it can just be like a slave and hook network cord from kulp to run falcon. Thank you
@@lemonfamily Power injection is a must over 300 pixels on 12v. Yes, you can use the FPP on the Kulp's beaglebone to run the F16V5. Your FPP must be on the same network (wired) as the F16V5.
@trevilights yes plan to run net work down from. Roof. Yeah I don't know how to do the wires rather just keep each port to 300 it seems to worked that way.
Hi Dave. Yes you can. Keep in mind that all Kulp controllers require a Beaglebone black running FPP. You will have to set the Channel Input (Kulp's FPP) to listen to incoming data. Another thing you could do, is make this K16 your main show controller since it's already running an FPP and remove the Pi.
Yes, you can. In the controllers tab you can add the K8-B. You will see a different range of channels for esch controller. This is how you route the data to each controller.
It all depends where you place your controller. I have it on my garage were there is no network connection, so my only option is Wifi. If you have a nearby wired connection to your local network, then it is not needed. Thanks for watching.
Hi Trev i decided to buy this and a couple of smart receivers as well and will follow your tutorial , this may sound a silly question but when power injecting with other power supplies how do you get them all to turn on when the controller works , i am new to all this and learning fast about cutting power to one string to the next power injection and leaving negative and data still connected , but when power injecting long strings i cannot understand how other power supplies will turn on the same time as the controller , i hope this makes sense .
Hey Dave, This is how I plan to do it this year. I am switching my Falcon V3 to a Kulp K8-B just try Kulp. The Kulp will be inside my garage connected 24/7 and running my show from 5pm to 10pm. The kulp needs to remain powered all the time. Outside I have 1 box with two power supplies. This power supplies are connected to a Outdoor timmer similar to the one in the link below. This timer will turn on the power supplies 10 minutes before the show starts and will turn them off 10 minutes after the show ends. I use 10 minutes just in case they go out of sync. Unfortunately the pixels will still be power by the kulp power supply even when they are off, they will still consume some power, but very little. With the V3, this was not an Issue since I could shutdown the V3 and leave the Raspberry Pi on. I am going to so some research to see if we can shutdown the main board on the Kulp but leave the BB on. www.amazon.com/BN-LINK-Outdoor-Weatherproof-Sprinklers-Christmas/dp/B08GQJNXTZ/ref=sxin_16_pa_sp_search_thematic_sspa?content-id=amzn1.sym.4e7a2229-074e-44de-95c4-9fd858f46295%3Aamzn1.sym.4e7a2229-074e-44de-95c4-9fd858f46295&crid=39C1XLIKGWY2V&cv_ct_cx=outdoor+timer&keywords=outdoor+timer&pd_rd_i=B08GQJNXTZ&pd_rd_r=e280f1d3-3e8c-428a-8e55-447ac694572a&pd_rd_w=Tyqnw&pd_rd_wg=aWMBv&pf_rd_p=4e7a2229-074e-44de-95c4-9fd858f46295&pf_rd_r=5S3AC3ZWYAYKWD858JYE&qid=1668525630&sprefix=outdoor+timer%2Caps%2C85&sr=1-4-a73d1c8c-2fd2-4f19-aa41-2df022bcb241-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9zZWFyY2hfdGhlbWF0aWM&psc=1
@@trevilights Trev i often wondered how this was done now i understand how , i do appreciate your time and effort , i think without your help many of us would be lost doing this as it is not as easy as many think , i appreciate all you do , to help .

@@blackdave8525 The setup is exactly as I show in this video. In this video I use two snowflakes as an example, in your case you are going divide the number of pixels by two and enter one value in port one and the other in port two. If you need help we can take a closer look using a zoom session. You can book some time in my site.
Hello Trevi. I’ve been wanting to add f16v4 to my existing f16v3 but they only have ready to run which has no space for expansion board. I came across your video and thought of using this temporarily just to support my additional props this year of about 7000 pixels. I’m new and I’m confused about Beaglebone and FPP. I never used that before with my Falcon. I use my laptop to run my show. Do I need to add beaglebone and fpp to run my pixels if I use my laptop? Tks for the advice.
Hey Randy, thanks for watching. Not sure what you mean that the V4 has no space for expansion boards. Do yo mean inside the plastic case? You can also add an expansion board for the your V3. Keep in mind that the expansion boards only add more pixel ports, not the number of pixels the V3 or V4 can support. You can also use a second controller to expand your show. You can use a V3 and a V4. About the Falcon Player (FPP), is a sequence player allowing to playback your sequences without a dedicated computer. It can run in a Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone and other project computers. You install the FPP softare in a SD card and insert it on a PI or Beabglebone. The FPP is very robust and allows you to do many other things that you cannot do from a PC. The Raspberry Pi is connected using the ethernet port to your V3 or V4 in order to play the sequences. The Kulp controllers on the other hand are a little different. They use a Beaglebone computer That attaches to the main pixel board (no need for ethernet connection) and it runs the FPP to play the sequences. Same concept but a little different. When you run your show from a PI or BB you take the burden of your controller to do both things, play sequence and control lights. More professional. You can also control 2 or more controllers form these devices. This year I am switching to the Kulp just for fun and to test it.
@@trevilights thank you very much Trevi for educating me. My V3 is already maxed out. I’ve been waiting for V4 for months now but the ready to run case that they have don’t have space for additional battery and expansion board. I want to be able to put together a case that includes expansion and power injection distro board. I’m used to falcon v3 , I don’t want to switch to other brands but your video makes me feel confident in trying Kulp controllers. Sounds like a good alternative. My laptop is dedicated only for xlights and controller. I didn’t use Raspberry Pi when I started because it’s complicated. I bought a laptop just for my show. My question is, if I try Kulp controllers, does it mean I have to use a laptop for my v3 and beaglebone / fpp for my Kulp controller? I use speakers for my show connected to my laptop, do I move the audio connection to beaglebone? Thank you so much for your help as always.
@@randybaron5190 Randy, if you get a Kulp you can do two things. You can use your computer to run your show and add the kulp to your ethernet network and the kulp to the Controllers tab in xlights. You will also need to change your sequences to include the kulp. The other option is similar to the first but since now you have a FPP running in a BB (attached to the kulp) you could run your show from this device and remove your computer from the show. Since the BB does not comes with a sound card your will need to buy one and also get a wifi dongle.
Thank you very much Trevi. This makes perfect sense. Very nice of you to guide us. I ordered the Kulp board and I just included the beaglebone too just in case. I hope it works as easy the falcon controllers.
@@randybaron5190 Nice. You are going to like it. Remember that you will also need an usb sound card and a wifi dongle if you want to access it wirelessly.
Hi I gather there good for the falcon but can this be run as a separate controller , plus xlights itself only has certain controllers it recognises, same with WLED , as I have been testing the dig quad and now he has a dig octa coming out with many stack levels to it and power injection ports , seems to be there a lot cheaper than many of these ranges available
Hi Dave, there are quite a few different controllers for different needs and budgets. I have never use any quinled boards. But I can tell they are becoming more popular every season. Thanks for watching.
Does this need to be plugged in via Ethernet at all times while running your show? Also what can I use as extra receivers for other locations for props?
Hi Joe, The connection via Ethernet is only for doing the Initial setup (and to upload large files afterwards) and to get your Wifi going. Once you have the WIfi going, you can connect to the FPP using the Wifi. Since the Kulp uses a Beaglebone device hosting the Falcon Player, it can run by itself. You can connect up to 3 receviers (4 pixel ports). Keep in mind that the Kulp K8-B does not have a Wifi module or a sound output. you will need to get an USB Hub to connect both devices at the same time.
@@trevilights so the BBB has Wi-Fi or I have to get an attachment for that? If so which one do you recommend and are there wireless receivers that I can get to go along with this?
Forgive me for the questions as I’m going through your video but planned on buying this one and want to get a wireless receiver for other props but use this for my house trim, windows, and a few other things on the house
@@RCJOE The Smart Receviers need to be connected to the main controller using a twisted par cable, such as the ones use for ethernet. This is how they get the data.

Saludos.
I love your videos. This is going to be my first year and your content is very helpful. I was wondering if you are aware of anybody that sells sequences in Spanish. Do you know of anyone that does this? I asked on one of the fb groups but didn't really get anything.

My best wishes for 2024.

This is a great video. I just realized I have the K8-PB. It looks like I need to buy the pocket beagle board.
Will this video still work for my board?

Hi Trevor wonder if you can shed some light on this for me , have a tree with 12 strings 50 pixels each string , I only want port 1 to control this with an extra power supply to run the power injections , it has one continuous data for all , how would you set that up on FPP on channels , I cannot add data to the strings it’s from the start to finish in one line 600 pixels , then on another port add more parts of a display , just not sure as I know each channel handles 170 any help welcome , do
I add 4 channels at 150 on port 1 ? .
in xlights this will be setup as 1 String, 600 pixels per string and 12 strands.

I was thinking about trying to make a tree since I have 2000 pixels. But maybe doing a few snowflakes following this would be easier for my first ever project.
Hi John. If you need help setting it up you can go to my website Trevilights.com and book some time with me. I can show you what you need to do. Pretty much the same as the K8.
The FPP may take from 1 to 2 minutes the frist time. Be patient.
Can I use a Kulp K16A-B as a 3rd controller with 2 F16V3 and a raspberry pie running the show?

Can I run falcon controller & K8-B controller at the same time in xlights?
Yes, you can. In the controllers tab you can add the K8-B. You will see a different range of channels for esch controller. This is how you route the data to each controller.
@@trevilights Awesome thanks!
ok it looks interesting, but you need to listen to it in Spanish, to thoroughly investigate that control.
Hey I know this is kind of an old video but could anyone explain to me why you would need wifi for this? Thanks

Hello Trevi. I’ve been wanting to add f16v4 to my existing f16v3 but they only have ready to run which has no space for expansion board.
Since the BB does not comes with a sound card your will need to buy one and also get a wifi dongle.

@@trevilightsTrev you could be right because i took the card out and it is saying i need to format the card ? if it had FPP on it then why is it asking me to format before use ? i paid to have all this lot preinstalled , but after all install it would that stop the oled from coming on in general or should it come on with the new FPP software ?
Where did you get this controller from?

Saludos.
Muchas gracias te felicito por tus videos
@@SolutionsJJr Gracias. Saludos.
Good afternoon friend, could you make a video of this however in spanish? it would make understanding a little easier since I speak from Brazil, Spanish is easier to understand, I'm wanting to import a kulp controller to do my first show. Big hug from Brazil
Hello. Thanks for writing. Unfortunately I am not going to make it in Spanish, sorry. I will for the next videos. It just takes so much time and effort. But you can book some of my time in trevilights.com if you need help.
@@trevilights oh, ok, yes, no problems, it's really hard work, just ask me one more question, please, how far are your led pixels from the controller and what thickness/bite of wire do you use to power the pixels and also for the data cable?
@@droni-giovane2163 The first pixel can be as far as 20 -30 feet from the controller. You can buy some f-amp from pixelcontroller.com is you need to go longer. The f-amp amplifies the distance. All the cable for data and power is 18awg.
@@trevilights ah yes, got it, one last doubt, the kulp lights controllers, do they control ws2812b?
@@droni-giovane2163 Hi there. Yes, it does. Just keep in mind that some of these strips lit 3 pixel at a time.
